  1. Bassoon Duets from Orchestral Excerpts Vol. 1

    Composer: Various Arranger: Simpson, Peter
    Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bassoon
    Genre: Classical

These duos are designed to provide an enjoyable and pedagogically sound context in the study of orchestral excerpts for bassoon. By learning both parts of the duets, you should develop a better sense of the harmonies and rhythms that are present in other parts of the orchestra. Each piece is designed to have clear beginnings, endings, and transitions so that the arrangement feels like a short piece, rather than a collection of disjointed excerpts. In order to accomplish this, I have added and modified some material based on the original orchestral parts.

Volume 1 contains music that is fairly technically accessible, while Volume 2 is considerably more challenging. If your goal is to use these duos to help familiarize yourself with these excerpts before you have all the technical skills needed, then you may try starting with some of the easier accompaniments or try simplifying some of the solos by changing tempos, octaves, articulations, etc.

    Duets included:

Giuseppe Verdi – Quid sum miser from Requiem

  3. Bassoonisms

    Composer: Buss, Howard J.
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bassoon
    Genre: Contemporary
The titles of its 3 movements, "Basslets," "Moonstruck," and "Festoons," are derived in part from the spelling of the word “bassoon.” In addition to musically capturing qualities of the subjects of the titles, they also explore musical characteristics unique to the bassoon. Basslets are tiny, elegant and colorful tropical fish that when observed in large groups create a mesmerizing effect as they flit about. The word “moonstruck” refers to the condition of being out of character due to being in love. Festoons are decorative garlands of flowers, ribbons, lights, or other objects hung in a draped fashion. 9. Black Notes

    Composer: Browning, Zack
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Alto Sax, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary
with Piano: Written for Joe Lulloff and inspired by jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s composition Blacknuss. In the introduction to Blacknuss Kirk states "there are 52 white notes and 36 black notes on the piano. We're going to play the black notes only, if you don't mind." The opposition suggested between black and white notes is expanded to include static and dynamic elements, consonant and dissonant harmonies, and pattered and non-patterned events. The title also refers to the middle section's exclusive use of the black notes of the piano. Vigorous swing rhythms contrast with sections of haunting beauty. Learn More

  10. Black Pearls

    Composer: Gomez, Alice
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

    unaccompanied

Black Pearls presents the feelings of anxiety and sorrow that I had after reading The Pearl by American author, John Steinbeck.

The story features a poor Mexican pearl diver, Kino, and his wife and son. One day Kino’s son, Coyotito, became very ill from a scorpion sting. Kino rushed his son to the doctor, however, the doctor would not treat Coyotito because the family had no money. Kino had discovered a very large black pearl, and had hoped to sell it for money to pay the doctor. Little did he know that possessing the enormous black pearl would cause him so much trouble.

Steinbeck’s story explores man’s nature, as well as greed and evil.

  12. Blood Vapour

    Composer: Boots, Cornelius
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Alto Flute, Bass Flute, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

2 Flutes, Alto Flute and Bass Flute

The fourth part of the Chthonic Flute Suite commissioned by Areon Flutes in 2012. This suite has two main inspirations: ideologically it draws guidance from the book The Dream and the Underworld (1979)by James Hillman (1926-2011) and musically it explores the textural possibilities of a flute ensemble within the context of the “heavy chamber music” style I have developed with Edmund Welles: the bass clarinet quartet since 1996.

The quartet is divided into three sections: Thymos—Phrenes—Chthonios.

Thymos means “blood vapour” and is one of the elements that souls of the dead in the underworld completely lack, therefore they crave it and seek it out; they also lack “breath consciousness” or phrenes.

The term “chthonic” [thon-ik] generally means “underworld.” However, Hillman thoroughly elaborates that its true meaning extends “below the earth and beyond it” (p.36) into invisible, non-physical and far distant psychic realms as opposed to being limited to a “primitive earthiness” that limits us to the physical and fertile “underground.” Hillman weaves a captivating and expanded perspective on “chthonic” and the deeper mysteries of the invisible, drawing from such sources as Greek and Egyptian mythology, Freud, Nietzsche, and more. “The underworld is a realm of only psyche, a purely psychical world…underworld is the mythological style of describing a psychological cosmos. Put more bluntly: underworld is psyche.” (p.46)

  13. Blues Ranger, The

    Composer: Oxford, Josh
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Bass Clarinet
    Genre: Contemporary

    unaccompanied

Josh Oxford writes, “When I was in elementary school, I was a big fan of the television show Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Part of the show’s theme (‘Go go power rangers’) is embedded a few times in the piece and serves as the basis for a lot of the material. The piece prominently features the blues scale and the octatonic scale, often seamlessly moving from one scale to the other.”

  14. Bombur's Dream

    Composer: Joyce, Brian
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Oboe, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

For Oboe and Piano, "Bombur's Dream" is a three movement work that is a wonderful recital piece.

    Program notes from the composer:

For those who may need to brush up on their dwarf-lore, Bombur was one of thirteen dwarves featured in J. R. R. Tolkien’s book, The Hobbit. Along with the title character, Bilbo Baggins, and Gandalf the wizard, Bombur and the other dwarves set out on a long and dangerous quest to recover a vast treasure which had been stolen by the dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bombur stumbled into an enchanted river and promptly fell into a deep sleep from which he could not be awakened for several days. This meant that his friends had to carry him along with all their gear. (It should be noted that Bombur had what we might call a keen appreciation for fine cuisine; because of his resulting avoirdupois he was not an easy burden to bear.)

Eventually Bombur awoke but, according to Tolkien, when he learned that there was nothing to eat, he sat down on the ground and wept. “Why did I ever wake up?” he cried. “I was having the most beautiful dreams!”

The first movement of this piece has to do with Bombur’s lovely dreams and the second with his sorrow upon awakening. The third movement, “King Under the Mountain” is a cortège for the dwarves’ officious leader, Thorin Oakenshield. Bombur’s Dream is dedicated to the composer’s wife, the oboist Susan Joyce.
