    Composer: Heritage, Lee
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Alto Sax, Baritone Sax, Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax
    Genre: Contemporary
The 4 independent voices of the sax quartet weave together simple rhythmic gestures and lilting melodies in a tapestry of contrapuntal lines in this exciting work. This playful mood gives way momentarily to a more relaxed singing style, but the optimistic energy of the opening quickly resurfaces. The 4 instruments dance again in a crescendo of counterpoint, converging at the last moment in a richly harmonized, chorale-like statement of the original melody. Learn More

  4. A Ways In...

    Composer: Oxford, Josh
Instrumentation: Duet and Piano Instruments: Flute, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    Flute duet and Piano

“In twelve tone music, all twelve chromatic pitches are arranged so that all twelve notes are played without repeating. The chromatic scale is a basic example of this concept. This technique was initially used to free composers from the dogmas of functional harmony. Many frown upon this technique because it often creates “ugly” music that is dissonant and atonal. There’s even a technique called “total” serialism where dynamics and articulations, along with pitches, are also serialized. I found that by harmonizing every note with consonant chords that plane well, such as “sus2” chords or “major 7th” chords, it’s possible to create very tonal and tuneful music– “tonal” serialism. Experimenting with this technique has led to music that sounds, at times, reminiscent of Eric Ewazen, hence the title “A Ways In…” – Josh Oxford

  8. Adagio, Tema con Variazioni e Finale sopra il tema nell'opera Il Pirata del Bellini

Composer: Tonassi, Pietro Arranger: Barger, Diane
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
    Genre: Romantic

    with Piano

Pietro Tonassi borrows two melodies from Act 2, Scene 9 of Vincenzo Bellini’s opera Il Pirata to create his multi-thematic fantasy for clarinet and piano. For the majority of the work, the clarinet depicts the role of Gualtiero while the piano provides the orchestral accompaniment as heard in Bellini’s opera semiseria of 1827. The two arias are manipulated in creative and challenging ways throughout the introduction, Adagio cavatina, cadenza, theme and variations, finale and coda sections.

  9. Agents of Espionage

    Composer: Bramble, Zachary
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Clarinet, Electronics
    Genre: Contemporary

    with downloadable backing track

Composer Zachary Bramble says, “As the title conveys, Agents of Espionage was inspired by the artful prowess of the spy. This work is composed for clarinet and electronic medium. The piece begins and ends illusively, carefully sneaking in and out until it finally ends with a stealthily fades out, much like the swiftness of a spy in pursuit. Though the piece has a distinct form, it includes somewhat of a programmatic feel with its ‘spy’ image becoming the work’s main engine. The clarinet is formidably cast as the spy as it jumps in and out unexpectedly, but also carries a major structural role when playing the main themes. The electronic track accompanies the clarinet and is essentially its rival, pushing the clarinet to its extremes in register, dynamics, and color. The interplay between the two instruments provides a dark, yet distinct musical image of the spy’s many talents, but also brings to light the many challenges that an agent of espionage must inevitably face.”

During the opening section he/she is playing unaccompanied, but then is joined by the recording which contains sounds generated by traditional instruments as well as an "alien" voice, the spacecraft, and various electronic effects. Technically, the title refers to how the recording was made. It consists of numerous sound loops combined to form an imaginative and picturesque sonic tapestry. The publication includes the sheet music and a CD (attached to the inside of the back cover) that contains a performance track and the accompaniment track. Will work on Soprano and Tenor Saxophone.
