  3. Suite for Reeds

    Composer: Cobb, Nancy Hill
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Oboe
    Genre: Contemporary

    Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon

Suite for Reeds was commissioned by Trio Canna from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (Andrea Splittberger-Rosen, Stacey Berk and Patricia Holland) and premiered by them in 2010. Cobb wrote the work as part of her grieving process within the first year after her husband’s death in 2009. The first movement, “Lamentation Perpetual” reflects the disorientation of grief. The second, “Wistful Waltz,” depicts the sadness that good memories of the dance in a former life can bring. Awkward and humorous attempts to recover and “march ahead” with life are found in “March Gone Awry”. The final movement, “Remedy in Tarantella,” reflects the triumph of renewed energy and the human spirit prevailing. All four movements are cast in familiar structures of unity and variety.

  8. Three for Three

    Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary
For Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, "Three for Three" was named simply because it is three movements for three players. One features an opening motive of a major second, and it is this interval, with its associated rhythm, that is the driving force of the first and last portions of the movement. The middle section of One (the piece is ABA form) features the opening motive of the third movement’s theme. In Two, gently undulating rhythms provide a backdrop for the flute, which contains most of the melodic content. Three begins with all voices in unison on the main theme, which then breaks into a propulsive minimalist section. A fugato is heard with this theme as the subject prior to the movement’s end. 10. Three Reed Trios

    Composer: Simpson, Peter
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

    Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon

This collection is intended to expand reed trio repertory into musical periods before such an ensemble existed. This is somewhat consistent with history, because up through the Baroque era, it was common for instruments to substitute for one another or even for voices. The earliest work is a love song (Quam pulcra es) in three vocal parts by John Dunstable, a 15th century English composer. The middle piece (Suite en Trio II) is a suite of dances from a large set of trios written by the 17th century French composer Marin Marais. The final piece (Sinfonia 14) is one of J.S. Bach’s three part inventions for keyboard.

  14. Turbulent Times

    Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Flute, Oboe
    Genre: Contemporary
Was composed during 2009, a time when The Great Recession held its powerful grip much of the world, and uncertainty continued to build within American society. There was a general sense that the prosperity of the past may never return, and that the future may bring even more hardships. As the seemingly endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wore on, many did not expect peace to return in the foreseeable future. Yet, life went on. The music of Turbulent Times suggests the ebb and flow of the intense uncertainty felt by many with the more pleasant aspects of everyday life. Following the lyrical and plaintive introduction, stormy passages give way to sections of relative tranquility, only to reappear. Learn More

  15. Two Girls and a Boy

    Composer: Zaheri, Amir
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Oboe
    Genre: Contemporary

    Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon

Scott Hannah writes, “Amir Zaheri (b. 4 March 1979) composed Two Girls and a Boy for the Cavell Trio, and dedicates the score to the ensemble – ‘for the Cavell Trio, with greatest admiration and appreciation.’ Zaheri describes Two Girls and a Boy as a musical conversation, for which he first wrote a story, then created a musical setting. He likens the piece to the film work of Woody Allen, which frequently features overlapping conversations, with characters finishing one another’s sentences.”
