  1. Fuging Machine

    Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary
For Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano, the "Fuging Machine" is about a machine in a factory that spends its life making widgets. After a while on the factory line, it discovers an ability to construct fugues, something its designers never intended. A fugue subject, based in part on the “mechanical music” of the factory, arises in the clarinet. The machine expands this into a full fugue, breaking away from the drudgery of making widgets. By the end of the piece, the machine goes back to making widgets, but its existence is enriched by its newfound ability. Learn More

  2. Hymnal Variations

    Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary
Composed for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, these "Hymnal Variations" use two famous hymn tunes as themes along with 12 variations, six on each hymn tune, in an arch like construction. The first tune, entitled Avon (Beneath the Sacred Throne) in the old hymnbooks, is stated at the beginning and is followed by six short variations. After a brief transition, the first of six variations on the theme Nettleton (Come Thou Fount) is heard. The piece concludes with a fortissimo statement of the Nettleton tune. Learn More

  3. Three for Three

    Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary
For Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, "Three for Three" was named simply because it is three movements for three players. One features an opening motive of a major second, and it is this interval, with its associated rhythm, that is the driving force of the first and last portions of the movement. The middle section of One (the piece is ABA form) features the opening motive of the third movement’s theme. In Two, gently undulating rhythms provide a backdrop for the flute, which contains most of the melodic content. Three begins with all voices in unison on the main theme, which then breaks into a propulsive minimalist section. A fugato is heard with this theme as the subject prior to the movement’s end.
