After a while on the factory line, it discovers an ability to construct fugues, something its designers never intended. A fugue subject, based in part on the “mechanical music” of the factory, arises in the clarinet. The machine expands this into a full fugue, breaking away from the drudgery of making widgets. By the end of the piece, the machine goes back to making widgets, but its existence is enriched by its newfound ability. Learn More

  17. Parley for Winds

    Composer: Ardovino, Lori
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Oboe
    Genre: Contemporary

    Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon

Parley for Winds for Woodwind Trio is a four movement work, each movement a discussion between the players. Deliberation is slow and careful, each player avoiding conflict, while at times two and sometimes all three players come together in a punctuated thought, as if coming together as a compromise. Colloquy is more of a light discussion where all voice come together amicably, void of any serious disagreement. Quibble is introduced by the clarinet, the motive slightly agitated and seeming to raise objection. The oboe and bassoon quickly chime in with their objection and then everything seems to go awry. Heated Discussion is fast and rhythmic, each voice stating their own opinion trying to outdo the other. The discussion becomes inflamed with conviction by the three and remains so to the spirited end.
