  2. Koreana

    Composer: Snyder, Randall
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Clarinet, Flute, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary
Koreana (2015) for flute, clarinet and piano by Randall Snyder is a suite of traditional Korean folk songs harmonized in various Western styles. The gentle T’aryong was originally a movement from the monumental Yongsan Hoesang, an orchestral suite first notated in the 15th century. It was later adapted as the graceful Dance of the Crane. Han o baeng nyon is a folk song from the eastern province of Kangwondo (now divided between North and South Korea). Its existential lyrics speak of the transience of existence; even five hundred years is not enough time to fully experience life. The bluesy melody is harmonized in the style of Ravel. Arirang is the most well known of Korean melodies and exist in several distinct versions. This one, from Kyonggi Province around Seoul, features a pentatonic melody in a setting influenced by Aaron Copland. Sarag Ga is love song from a P’ansori, the uniquely Korean opera-like form performed by just a vocalist and single drummer. Its essentially monophonic texture is embellished with Neo-Classic dissonances and rhythms suggestive of Stravinsky. Learn More

  3. La Calavera

    Composer: Gomez, Alice
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

    unaccompanied

Composer Alice Gomez says, “La Calavera for solo horn (arranged for flute) was composed one evening while I was looking through a stack of loteria cards. The loteria is a popular and traditional game in Mexico. It is similar to bingo in that players are given cards with pictures on them and have to place them in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line as a caller announces them. There are fifty-four loteria cards, which have pictures of familiar objects such as a woman, a rooster, the devil, watermelon, and the moon. When a card is drawn, the call has to spontaneously create a rhyme using the name of the object on the card.

I began composing this piece without having a title for it. While thumbing through the loteria cards, I became fixated on card number forty-two, la calavera. A calavera is a skull with crossbones. While working on this mysteriously peculiar piece, I had a strong feeling that the image on the card was guiding me through the composition. I became so spooked, I wasn’t sure if I could continue working on the piece. I was only able to finish it by choosing to believe that the image presented itself to me as a remembrance of a long lost soul.”

Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Alto Flute, Bass Flute, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary
4 flutes or ensemble (3 C and 1 bass - or 2 C, alto, bass): This work showcases the agility and rich sonority of the instruments. It can be performed as a quartet with three C flutes and a bass flute; or with two C flutes, alto flute, and bass flute. (An alto flute in G is provided as and alternative to flute 3.) Multiple players may be used on the parts to expand the ensemble. The title refers to an imagined dream of Levi, the namesake of the Israelite Tribe. The Levites were known for their involvement in priestly duties and music. The music has a distinctly Middle-eastern quality. The soulful nature of the slower sections is enhanced by the expressive, luscious ambience of the flutes. The composition features 2 sections with original tunes in the style of Jewish folk songs. One is slow and contemplative, the other, jubilant. This is an audience-friendly work appropriate for the concert hall or a house of worship. Learn More
