Angles of Repose
Composer: Wickman, Ethan
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Percussion, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano and 2 Percussion
From composer Ethan Wickman:
“Angles of Repose draws the inspiration for its title from Wallace Stegner’s novel about an itinerant mining engineer and his family as they struggle to prosper in the American West. In Stegner’s work, the title refers simultaneously to the angle at which granular materials achieve stability on a slope and the forces of fortune and consequence that ultimately shape the lives of its protagonists. I have become increasingly interested in the way that physical forces create analogues for social, emotional, interpersonal and even musical ones. While this piece does not pictorially narrate the physical phenomenon, it aspires to translate the interplay of these forces into musical ones.”
This work is in three contrasting movements: I. Angle of Displacement, II. Forlorn Angles and III. Angle of Acceleration.

Blues Ranger, The
Composer: Oxford, Josh
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Bass Clarinet
Genre: Contemporaryunaccompanied
Josh Oxford writes, “When I was in elementary school, I was a big fan of the television show Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Part of the show’s theme (‘Go go power rangers’) is embedded a few times in the piece and serves as the basis for a lot of the material. The piece prominently features the blues scale and the octatonic scale, often seamlessly moving from one scale to the other.”

Groove
Composer: Russell, Jonathan Instruments: Bass Clarinet
Genre: Contemporaryunaccompanied
From composer Jonathan Russell:
“‘Groove’ is the result of feeling stuck, frustrated, irritated and annoyed. In the fall of 2001, during the first year of my masters program at San Francisco Conservatory, I was hard at work on an epic, serious piano piece, when I hit a wall and simply could not get anywhere with it. Then one night I went to a concert of Conservatory faculty playing chamber music, and I found myself so annoyed by the polite applause, by their pretty bowties, by the tastefulness and refinement of their playing, by all of the formalities and niceness that seemed to get in the way of direct communication of the music. After the performance, I went up to the practice room and vented by jamming on my bass clarinet. I liked what I was coming up with – it was raw, aggressive, unrefined and direct, everything I was missing from classical music at the time – and I started writing some of it down. Over the next few days I got down all of the ideas that would form the basis of ‘Groove’. I worked on this material off and on over the course of about a year until I finally molded it into its (hopefully) coherent yet still raw final form.”

Sessionography
Composer: Ardovino, Lori
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Bass Clarinet
Genre: Contemporaryunaccompanied
Composer Lori F. Ardovino says, “Sessionography: A description of various musical sessions. This piece for solo bass clarinet is in three movements. The first movement, King Super 20, is inspired by the artistry of Charlie Parker. The fast improvisatory runs represent his virtuosic technique. A quasi ‘walking bass’ can be heard between the sudden bursts of notes. The title of this work is the brand of saxophone that Parker mainly played.”
“Composition No. 2 is inspired by the free jazz style of Anthony Braxton. His music is free improvisation based and named by Braxton ‘creative music’. Extended techniques such as flutter tonguing and singing while playing add to the creative process and the flavor of Braxton’s style. The name comes from similar titles for works by Braxton. The final movement, Just Groovin’, is what Miles Davis’ composition Move was dubbed by jazz critics. This movement is inspired by the rhythmic style and free improvisation style of this bebop tune.”
