Forest Sounds was composed in 2013 as a commission for the Inspirare Duo, clarinetist Gail Zugger and flutist Lisa Jelle and premiered by them in October of that year. The piece is one movement, divided into four sections, each focusing on a concept of sound within a forest. The first section is bird calls, featuring the robin and cardinal. Section two introduces waterfowl with conversations between the sandpiper, mallard duck, and loon. Section three features the small critters: squirrel, chipmunk and rabbit scurrying about on the forest floor. The final section is a portrait of all the animals on a sunny summer day enjoying a multitude of simultaneous conversations. Tempo markings and alterations should be viewed as guides. The performers should feel free to allow the music to push and pull as they wish. Enjoy! Learn More

Micah Ahern lived 7 courageous, hard-fought years with Neuroblastoma, a deadly form of cancer that attacks children. I had the privilege of knowing sweet little Micah where he was a student at Ditto Elementary School in Arlington Texas, where I am the school librarian.

He lost his battle July 28, 2016; he spent every day living his life to the fullest and was especially fond of baseball. Micah become an honorary member of the Texas Christian University (TCU) baseball team the last 3 years of his life, and even attended one of their playoff games in the College World Series shortly before he died. Micah's zest for life had a tremendous positive effect on everyone that he knew. He is loved and missed by many.

Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

“Three Bagatelles” for Bb Clarinet and Piano is 10 minutes in length and divided into three distinct parts:

The first part, Des Jeux (playing), presents the enthusiastic excitement of children at.

The second part, Novembre (November), expresses the melancholy and romantic atmosphere of Autumn through lyrical melody.

Finally, the third part is Allegro, Le Tourbillion (the whirlwind), where the composer presents a whirlpool of sounds that irregular and unstable. Sometimes the tune staggers and sometimes it rotates in unison, but there is always instability.

  10. Variations for Clarinet

    Composer: Raum, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

This set of variations was originally written for flute and piano and called Valentine Variations. It was a commission by Tom Schudel, a Regina, Saskatchewan composer, as a birthday present for his wife, flautist, Jane Schudel. For this reason, I felt it would be appropriate to write a theme and variations using as a theme part of a previously written work by Tom for Jane called Valentines.

Later I was asked to adapt this piece for several other instruments including the trumpet and clarinet. I dropped the word, “Valentines” from the title as that was specific to the sentiment of the version for flute.

The piece begins with a 22 measure prelude played by the piano before the first statement of the theme by the solo instrument. The statement is accompanied by the prelude and indeed, the two retain their delineation throughout with each part being a variation on itself thus creating a sort of double theme and variations although there are the occasional "borrowings” of material between the two.

The piece was premiered on a special CBC program given to honour "Women of Note" scheduled to be broadcast on "Women's Day." March 7, 1992 with Jane Schudel playing the solo.
