After a while on the factory line, it discovers an ability to construct fugues, something its designers never intended. A fugue subject, based in part on the “mechanical music” of the factory, arises in the clarinet. The machine expands this into a full fugue, breaking away from the drudgery of making widgets. Three for Three

Genre: ContemporaryFor Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, "Three for Three" was named simply because it is three movements for three players. One features an opening motive of a major second, and it is this interval, with its associated rhythm, that is the driving force of the first and last portions of the movement. The middle section of One (the piece is ABA form) features the opening motive of the third movement’s theme. In Two, gently undulating rhythms provide a backdrop for the flute, which contains most of the melodic content. Three begins with all voices in unison on the main theme, which then breaks into a propulsive minimalist section. A fugato is heard with this theme as the subject prior to the movement’s end.
