“This Is the Day” started as a piece for a few musicians to play during breaks in rehearsals of the Rutland (Vermont) City Band. Each instrument's part has its own character and moments in the spotlight, carefully articulated to bring out syncopated melodies in a contrapuntal texture.
Daniel Luther Graves' original pieces and arrangements have been performed by concert bands, wind ensembles, jazz bands, choruses, string orchestras, and various quintets (brass, wind, saxophone, bassoon.) Dan studied Music Theory and Composition at the Hartt School of Music, and holds a Master of Music Education degree from UMass-Amherst. He has performed extensively as a piano soloist and accompanist.
Dan has taught Music in public and community schools, kindergarten through college. Currently, he is the Choral Director for Rutland's High School and Middle School. He served as Resident Composer, Assistant Director, and saxophonist in the Rutland City Band, the oldest continuous municipal band in the United States. Dan founded and directed the Curbstone Chorus, a men's community barbershop harmony group.
Daniel Luther Graves is a lifelong resident of Rutland, Vermont, where he lives with his wife. They are very proud of their daughter, the chemistry professor.
