  1. Cadenzas and Interludes #1

    Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Alto Sax, Violin
    Genre: Contemporary

    Violin and Alto Saxophone

Cadenzas and Interludes #1 "Memories from the Isle of Mull" was composed by Howard J. Buss and dedicated to Drs. Rachael and Stephen Fischer. It was inspired by the composer’s visit to the picturesque Isle of Mull in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. Particularly memorable was a Saturday night Cèilidh* in the island’s capital, Tobermory, which included traditional music from the area. The Scottish musical influences are not direct in Cadenzas and Interludes #1; rather, their spirit is blended with Buss’s style of soaring lyricism with a modern bent.

*Pronounced, Kay-lee. In Gaelic, a Cèilidh is a social gathering featuring music, storytelling, and dance.

  4. How Beautiful

    Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Viola
    Genre: Contemporary
with Piano How Beautiful was written at the request of Matt and Kristy Brown in memory of their son, Eli Reuben Brown, with us briefly on May 19, 2008. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings of peace; who publishes good tidings of good, and who declares salvation; who says to Zion, Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7) It was privilege for me to write this piece for the Browns, who shared with me some of their most intimate thoughts and feelings in the process. They have been the embodiment of Faith, Hope and Love and are a living example that “the greatest of these” is always Love. Learn More

  6. Sinfonietta

    Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin
    Genre: Contemporary
SINFONIETTA for string quintet (2-1-1-1) or string orchestra was commissioned by the Imperial Symphony Orchestra to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the American Music Center, the official United States information center for music. The music commences with a beautiful, mystical introduction that is somewhat transparent in nature. Haunting melodies for the solo viola and violin are superimposed over the sustained sonorities of the ensemble creating a deeply reflective mood. The music gradually becomes agitated and builds in intensity as the introduction gives way to a sequence of passages of varying length and character: A fanfare-like transition followed by an energetic segment characterized by driving rhythms and changing meters leads to a section featuring buoyant melodies where, through the fast-moving surface elegance, runs an undercurrent of tension. The composition concludes in a spirit of triumphant proclamation. Learn More

  9. Time Capsule

    Composer: Buss, Howard J.
    Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Violin
    Genre: Contemporary
The first movement, Daybreak, has a frolicking, optimistic character. Chorale breaks with the traditional structure of the chorale in that each phrase gets a measure longer. The harmonies of the second movement contain some spicy dissonances as well. Rendezvous, is in a lilting 6/8 and really "works up a lather" as it progresses to an exciting climax. Homeward Bound, begins with a fanfare-like passage that gives way to a spirited dance characterized by an intriguing interplay between the instruments. Learn More

  10. Triptych for Violin and Piano

    Composer: Sterrett, David
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Violin
    Genre: Contemporary
"Triptych for Violin and Piano" by David M. Sterrett. A “triptych” is a musical collage of three contrasting movements unified by a common musical element – in the case of this piece, each movement is in A-B-C-B-A form. While the movements are unified in matching formal scheme, each exudes a different style and character. The first, Scherzo, jokes and jabs with jagged lines and snapping gestures that are sometimes humorous and sometimes aggressive. The second movement, Rhapsody, is the emotional centerpiece of the work and contrasts the snarky character of the Scherzo with gentle, lush, lyrical lines which convey a sense of loss and longing, and ultimately the restorative power of hope. The final movement, Tarantella, follows with its own unique style, a flashy, quick and energetic dance, slightly dark and grim in character, though at times also joyous and playful. Piano score and solo part is included. (11’40”) Grade V. Learn More
