  4. Different Worlds

    Composer: Kline, Tyler
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Alto Sax, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

    Flute and Alto Saxophone

Composer Tyler Kline says, “Different Worlds is a dynamic, two-part work for flute and alto saxophone written for Morehead State University faculty duo Awea Duo. The piece is a reflection of a trip to China I was fortunate enough to take in the early summer of 2012. I had never been out of the United States, and visiting eastern Asia was quite a culture shock – definitely different from the world I’m used to. While there, I recorded street and temple sounds that directly influenced the melodic material of this work. From the slow and meditative first part to the aggressive and exciting second part, Different Worlds is a kaleidoscope of mood and style.”

  6. Divergences

    Composer: Buss, Howard J.
    Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Clarinet, Viola
    Genre: Contemporary
"Divergences" for clarinet and viola by Howard J. Buss was written for clarinetist Allison Storochuk and violist Kirsten Weingartner Weiss. The 3 movements explore a wide array of moods and sonic atmospheres ranging from the mystical, to the contemplative, to soaring, vibrant passages: Recollections of Shared Times, Disparate Views, and Celebrations. The composer states, “The titles relate to a phenomenon that has long fascinated me: How is it that people such as siblings, who grow up in the same environment (home, family, teachers, and shared experiences), can turn out in later years to be very different from one another with their religious and political beliefs, preferences for food, travel, music, etc. This is addressed generally in the duo, which is designed to be musically solid without any extra-musical, programmatic connotations. However, I think the titles and general character of the music will connect with many listeners and may make them think about the evolution of their own personal relationships.” Score and parts are included. This colorful composition is designed so that either one or two percussionists can perform it. The 3 movements take listeners through a wide range of emotions and sonic atmospheres. Lyrical sections that are playfully juxtaposed with forceful passages characterize the first movement, "Temporal Intrigues." The hauntingly beautiful second movement, "Mystic Eyes," has a dreamy, meditative quality. "Fusional Escapades" is energetic and, with the exception of the clarinet cadenza, the performers are equal partners. The sometimes-playful character of the music is reminiscent to that which occurs in the first movement. Learn More

  9. Dream of Wheat

    Composer: Boots, Cornelius
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

    Flute and Clarinet/Bass Clarinet

This piece originated as a loose collaboration between a composer and a poet. Crescent Duo (Joanna Cowan White and Kennen White) are active and interested in both realms, and are always seeking new and exciting pieces for their duo, so this was their concept. My advantage as the composer in this assignment was two-fold: I play the instruments that the piece was to be written for and the poet-collaborator (Jeffrey Bean) had also spent time as a composer and instrumentalist, so his poetry is always echoing thoughts and feelings from the music realm.

It was not the musical inspirations that caught my attention in Bean’s verse, however; it was the voice and words he used when describing nature, growing things and the sense of place felt in the seasons of the American Midwest, a region in which we had both spent formative years. Specifically, the 18 short stanzas (micro-chapters, actually) of Encyclopedia of the Wheat captured my imagination. I liked the fact that these 1 to 7 line stanzas were individually numbered and presented such a diversity of moods and feelings—all revolving around the myths, psyche and experience of The Wheat.

The common thread of the parts of the poem that resonated the most seemed to be a sense of reverence and mystery for the depth and aliveness of this vast, botanical entity called “wheat.” A poem and some movements of music dedicated to its influence and importance on humanity is like a micro-celebration of the reality of it. It is precisely this awe and reverence for the living system that we inhabit—that we emerged from—that must, desperately now, be regained.

Dream of Wheat was funded by a Faculty Research and Creative Endeavors grant from Central Michigan University.

  10. Earthy and Ethereal Bond, The

    Composer: Lee, Wendy Wan-Ki
    Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Cello, Flute
    Genre: Contemporary

    Flute and Cello

Wendy Lee writes: This piece is my musical exploration of the philosophical struggle between reality and idealism that each of us has endured in our minds—from the mishaps and social injustices that we encounter each day, to what we aspire and hope for that seems far-fetched and unattainable. Although life is always full of wonderful surprises that play with our expectations, part of what determines our everyday experiences is how much we can look beyond our earthy encounters which may not be the most desirable at times, and strive for our dreams to come true. The stronger the bonding between the two extremes—the earthy and the ethereal, the more perseverance we can have, and the closer we can get to our ideals.

This piece was commissioned by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild for Musicarama 2010 and premiered on October 16, 2010 at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre by Next Mushroom Promotion, a professional new music ensemble from Japan.

The beautiful second movement, Pastorale, is impressionistic and paints a sonic portrait of rural Florida's vast pasture lands, forests, lakes, and the Everglades. The final movement, The Eternal Sea, begins and ends with turbulent sections, one can easily imagine great waves crashing on the shoreline. The middle part of the movement has a swashbuckling and almost humorous quality about it, suggesting people frolicking at the beach. Florida Tableau was commissioned by the Florida State Music Teachers Association. “A curious musical blend of the old and the new, much like modern Florida itself. Learn More
