Summary

    Benedict Kirby has been writing music, performing (as a tubist) and educating low brass instrumentalists for more than 30 years in the midwest and northwest United States. He currently instructs the students of the tuba and euphonium studio of the University of Montana School of Music. He also directs UM’s Tuba & Euphonium Choir - a group which he founded in 2012 which has performed at the last two instances of the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) sponsored by the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA). His former teachers include Ross Tolbert (Minnesota Orchestra), John Stevens (UW-Madison) and Arnold Jacobs (Chicago Symphony). His composition teachers include Frank Bencriscutto and Dominick Argento. He performs professionally with several of Montana’s Symphony Orchestras and has been a featured soloist with both the Glacier and Missoula Symphonies. He is active as a commissioned/published composer with several works for concert band, brass choir, tuba/euphonium choir as well as music for solo tuba and large ensemble (orchestra/band). His composition titled “Dark Matter, Petite Concertante for Tuba and Orchestra/Band/Piano Reduction was selected as the winning composition for the the 2015 U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Tuba and Euphonium Workshop. He holds degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison and lives in Missoula, Montana.
