Fantasia di Ruy Blas
Composer: Cappelli, Giuseppe Arranger: Crawford, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Eb Clarinet, Piano
Genre: Romanticwith Piano
Giuseppe Cappelli composed Fantasia di Ruy Blas after Filippo Marchetti’s (1831-1902) opera Ruy Blas, in 1886. The opera was a four-act dramma lirico set to a libretto by Carlo d’Ormeville after Victor Hugo’s 1838 historical drama of the same name. It premiered at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, on April 3, 1869, and was Marchetti’s most notable opera. Forced into exile by Regina, the Queen of Spain (soprano) for rejecting her lady-in waiting, the wicked Don Sallustrio (baritone) plots revenge. He presents to the queen his valet, Ruy Blas (tenor), who is secretly in love with the queen, as the noble Don Cesare. Ruy Blas gains the queen’s favor and is promoted to prime minister and made a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. When Don Sallustrio reveals to the queen that she has fallen in love with a mere servant, Ruy Blas kills Don Sallustrio in a duel and then kills himself by drinking poison, an act that earns him the forgiveness of the queen. Giuseppe Cappelli’s Fantasia di Ruy Blas begins with a dramatic opening for e-flat clarinet and piano taken from the Preludio of Marchetti’s Ruy Blas. This leads into the first andantino, the Duetto for soprano and tenor of Act 3, Scene 3, “Dietro quell’uscio.” Music in the Andante sostenuto section is lifted from Marchetti’s most famous aria of the opera (and his career)—“O dolce volutta!” Here an impassioned Ruy Blas shares his joy at the news the queen is in love with him. Though out of order from the opera, the queen’s light-hearted love song, “Che t’amo,” follows and Cappelli affords the e-flat clarinet an opportunity for embellishment of the original aria. One final lyrical passage, taken from Regina’s somber aria, “O madre mia,” of Act 2, Scene 1, concludes the fantasy before Cappelli’s energetic finale of original material.

Five Elfin Dances
Composer: Joyce, Brian
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: English Horn, Oboe
Genre: ContemporaryFor 2 Oboes and English Horn, "Five Elfin Dances" is a fun piece that works best in a recital setting. The movements include:
I. The Busy Village
II. Cautious Explorers
III. Dance in the Glen
IV. The Princess's Song
V. Bound for Home
Program notes from the composer:
These miniatures began as musical doodling, written for fun during breaks from work on larger pieces. I have no idea why, but the first three pieces feature fleeting quotes from J. S. Bach.
These pieces were played several times soon after they were completed, including one performance for a class of 5th-graders at a local elementary school. In the days following that performance, the three musicians received several cards from the students. One girl wrote, "Thanks for coming. I was going to play the oboe but now I have decided not to." It's a wonderful thing to be able to influence a young life with one's music.

Five Muses
Composer: Stevens, John
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
From the composer:
The nine classic Greek Muses were the goddesses of inspiration for literature, science and the arts. In current English language, a “muse” is usually a person who inspires an artist, writer or musician. As a verb, the term refers to being absorbed in thought in a meditative, and perhaps inconclusive, way. These thoughts or, in this case, the movements of this work, may be referred to as “musings”.
For the titles of the complete work and each movement, I chose the five Muses most closely associated with the performance of music and then ordered them in a way that seemed to create a composition with shape, direction and balance. Each Muse is represented in Greek mythology by a symbol.
Euterpe (Song) Aulos (a flute-like musical instrument)
Terpsichore (Dance) Lyre (a harp-like string instrument)
Melpomene (Tragedy) The classic tragic mask
Thalia (Comedy) The classic comic mask
Erato (Lyric Poetry) Cithara (a musical instrument in the lyre family)
The arrangement of the movements in this order results in a work that has the somewhat unusual tempo structure of “slow-fast-slow-fast-slow”. Given that these are musical “musings”, it seemed appropriate to end on a thoughtful note rather than having the more typical big finish.
The character of each movement is, of course, inspired by association with the Muse of the title. “Euterpe” emphasizes melody, while “Terpsichore” is driven by rhythm. “Melpomene” has a sad quality, with “Thalia” being something of a zany romp. “Erato” concludes the work with a lyricism and thoughtfulness, and perhaps most closely depicts the act of musing. The composition as a whole is meant to showcase the lyrical, sonorous and technical capabilities of the tuba, with the piano sometimes being an equal chamber partner and sometimes in a more accompanying role.

Five Poems of Emily Dickinson
Composer: Mendel, Traci
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Clarinet, Voice
Genre: ContemporaryClarinet and Voice
Not long before I composed Five Poems of Emily Dickinson, I had relocated from the cool humidity of the mountains of Western North Carolina to the heat and drought-plagued Wiregrass region of southern Alabama. The poems reflect not only my longing for the mountains, but also my process of adjusting to my new home. In these songs the voice and clarinet parts are equal, as opposed to the more traditional relationship of voice and accompanying instrument. At times one part may be more obvious than the other, but at no time is either less important.

Five Songs
Composer: Rachmaninoff, Sergei Arranger: Adler-Mckean, Jack
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Romanticwith Piano
Arranger Jack Adler-McKean writes, “What better way of displaying the tuba’s remarkably beautiful singing tone than through the medium of Romantic song itself? Written between the ages of seventeen and twenty-three, these songs exemplify Rachmaninoff’s prodigious talent for combining timeless melodies with his unique style of piano writing, and now can demonstrate the tuba’s exceptional ability at replicating a Russian bass-baritone voice. Without texts to rely on from such luminary poets as Aleksei Tolstoy and Nikolai Minsky, the performer is presented with challenges that go far beyond the notes themselves. The final reward, however, of being able to create music of such exceptional beauty will inevitably justify all the work that is put in.”
