This collection of quartets is designed for players who may have had limited experience with small ensemble performance. The ranges are moderate and the rhythms are not complex. Each of the selections offer ensemble and solo or featured passages for all players. Styles, tempos and meters vary from one piece to another. Of course, more advanced players can certainly play and enjoy this set, but the less experienced can have some success with pieces that allow them to concentrate on the musical and ensemble aspects, rather than being slowed by technical elements. The Quintet No. 1 for Brass (2004) was composed for the American Brass Quintet to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the New York Brass Quintet. The composition was premiered by the American Brass Quintet on October 23, 2004 during the Brass Chamber Music Forum at Appalachian State University. The work demands technical skill and expressive playing from each of the five players. Changing meters, multiple tonguing and harmonic mediant relationships are revealed in the opening Vivace passage. These techniques form the structural basis for the composition. A menacing theme is presented by the trombones and then stated in inversion by the trumpets followed by the horn and bass trombone. A return of the opening material leads to an abrupt halt of the quick tempo. A Larhetto passage follows, characterized by slowly evolving harmonies and long melodic lines. The principal melody, a lyrical version of the theme from the opening section, is first stated by the trumpet and then by the trombone, bass trombone and horn. A slightly faster imitative passage follows during which the opening motive of the theme is passed from player to player in canonic fashion. The slower tempo returns as the middle section fades to a quiet close. A development section marked by the return of the opening tempo, rhythmic intensity and melodic materials leads to a varied recapitulation of the initial section. The entire opening section is restated with significant variation in the assignment of the materials and key centers. The furious tempo is maintained beneath the rhythmically augmented restatement of the lyrical theme. A final return of the opening material leads to a brief but dramatic coda that concludes the composition.

Composer Eduardo Nogueroles writes, “Brass Turbulences is a chamber piece for traditional brass quintet. The title of the works refers to the experience of air travel that brass ensembles make on tour. The nerves, the tiredness and the turbulence in the air inspired the piece, so that these sensations are recreated with the sounds of a group of brass instruments.” Learn More

BRASS MINIATURES for brass quintet by Howard J. Buss is in 4 short movements inspired by light and images reflected on polished brass: On the Edge, Refractions, Facets, and Illuminated Reflections. In November of 2018 the composer found a box labeled “1974” in a storage closet. It contained a collection of long-lost scores he had composed 4½ decades earlier. Upon examining the music it was apparent that in these works was a trove of youthful musical ideas that could be developed, polished, and edited into exciting “new” compositions. The musical content of first 3 movements of is close to that in the 1974 brass quintet. The final movement was rewritten to include elements of the original score, but updated to be closer to the composer’s current musical language. While On the Edge, Refractions, and Facets, have a decided edginess to them; Illuminated Reflections is more consonant and lyrical. It includes subtle references to material in the previous movements as well a buffed rendition of the opening melody of the first movement in its coda. Learn More

German musician Carl Teike was a military musician, playing amongst other instruments, the French Horn. He composed Alte Kameraden (Old Comrades) in 1889, and was less than pleased with his bandmaster’s reception to it – he suggested that Teike throw it on the fire. He promptly left the military and a cluey publisher picked up the march, which has become extremely popular – the most popular of all his over one hundred marches.

This brass quintet arrangement is a delightful addition to any program, and in an extra tribute to the composer, the French horn is featured in the trio.
