ZIGGY is based on a favorite cartoon character of the past. He is funny, slightly clumsy, romantic, very
patriotic, and has a gentle loving spirit. His wonderful attributes are meant to be reflected in the music.
SUNSET is a Texas sunset where there is quiet serenity at the end of the day with nature sounds, and
then a vast “rosy glow” extending over the landscape. It spreads across the horizon and then fades into the
SCHERZO ON A PUN comes from my acquaintance with three punsters--- two in my family and a
fellow musician. All of them are highly skilled in multiple areas, and when they offer a pun, they each wait
to see how long it takes for me to “get it.” Then there is laughter and great admiration on my part of their
cleverness and high intelligence.
Margaret Patten has a versatile background as a pianist, organist, flutist, composer, conductor, and
teacher. She received the International Grand Trophy for Composition in Ottawa, Canada, and her works have been performed in the Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, D. C., and at universities and
churches in Iowa, Michigan, Arizona, California, and Florida.
Ms. Patten has taught on the faculties of Merced College, California, Texas Wesleyan College,
Arlington, Texas, and Valencia Community College, Orlando, Florida. She has performed as a professional
accompanist throughout the United States and Canada and has been faculty accompanist at the colleges
listed above as well as at the State University of New York (Plattsburg), and the University of Central
Ms. Patten has been the Director of Music at Maitland Presbyterian Church in Maitland, Florida, andLearn More
is currently Artistic Director and Conductor of the Maitland Symphony Orchestra. She has a Bachelor of
Music Education and Master of Music in Performance from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, with post-
graduate study at the University of Texas (Arlington), and Texas Christian University (Fort Worth). She is
the pianist in the Clara Schumann Piano Trio and performs throughout central Florida with this ensemble.
Ms. Patten has a private teaching studio for piano, flute and composition in Altamonte Springs,
Florida. She has two sons, Paul (in Georgia), and David (in Washington), and three beautiful
granddaughters, Hannah, Vivian, and Asha.
