Composer Bio:

Born on March 13, 1952 in California, David Carlson has composed successfully in many genres including orchestral music, chamber music, and opera. His works have been performed by some of the country’s leading orchestras and chamber ensembles. The recipient of a number of awards and honors, he has received grants from Meet the Composer and commissions from Chamber Music America, the a cappella vocal group Chanticleer and opera companies in New York, Utah, California, Missouri and Florida. In 1995 he was given an Academy Award in composition by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His opera 'Anna Karenina," with a libretto by Colin Graham, received its European premiere in Germany in 2024.

“Lauranod Trilogy” is a collection of tunes written for various ensembles while I was living in Lausanne Switzerland. The name “Lauranod” is actually a permutation of the name “Lausanne” in that it is the word that my cell phone would always try to autospell for me while text messaging.

“PCO Fanfare” was originally written for a mixed low brass ensemble and premiered in the foyer of the conservatory building. Originally conceived as kind of a joke of sorts, the opening fanfare figure contains a mini-quote from the traditional Irish song “The Rattlin’ Bog.” The piece quickly assumed a life of its own and wandered in its own direction.

“Chorale & Fugue” began its life as a simple exercise in writing a four-part fugue. The beginning chorale section was added later. After its first inception as a four-part piece, it was expanded to a brass octet and then reduced to the brass quintet version here.

“Rue du Midi” was originally written for Ensemble STUBA (Swiss Tuba Und Baritone Association) in 2001 and received its premiere in Ermatingen, Switzerland. A raucous piece with lots of energy, it is named after the street next to the conservatory where a few favorite hangouts were located.

Micah Ahern lived 7 courageous, hard-fought years with Neuroblastoma, a deadly form of cancer that attacks children. I had the privilege of knowing sweet little Micah where he was a student at Ditto Elementary School in Arlington Texas, where I am the school librarian.

He lost his battle July 28, 2016; he spent every day living his life to the fullest and was especially fond of baseball. Micah become an honorary member of the Texas Christian University (TCU) baseball team the last 3 years of his life, and even attended one of their playoff games in the College World Series shortly before he died. Micah's zest for life had a tremendous positive effect on everyone that he knew. He is loved and missed by many.

The polonaise originated in Poland as a stately dance in moderate triple meter. It evolved to include both dance and instrumental concert pieces. Virtuoso pianist Frédéric Chopin composed the Military Polonaise, Op. 40, No. 1 in 1838. The middle section of this da capo form is in the subdominant key, featuring rhythms most characteristic of the traditional polonaise. This quintet arrangement incorporates phrasing from the piano original, set in three-two meter for ease of reading. The Military Polonaise can serve as a formal processional.
