In the Cross I Glory
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryALIEN LOOP DE LOOPS for solo instrument and electronic recording by Howard J. Buss is a playful and capricious fantasy piece designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences. The title refers to both programmatic and technical elements in the composition. The composer envisioned a performer outside in an open area during an air show by an alien craft. During the opening section he/she is playing unaccompanied, but then is joined by the recording which contains sounds generated by traditional instruments as well as an "alien" voice, the spacecraft, and various electronic effects. Technically, the title refers to how the recording was made. It consists of numerous sound loops combined to form an imaginative and picturesque sonic tapestry. The publication includes the sheet music and a CD (attached to the inside of the back cover) that contains a performance track and the accompaniment track. Twelve Canons
Composer: Various Arranger: Kesten and Kirk
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Euphonium
Genre: ClassicalFor Low Brass Trio, this is a wonderful set for a developing ensemble. Program notes:
Good ensemble playing is characterized by uniformity of pitch, articulation, tone color and dynamic gradation, all sustained within flowing pulse. These canonic selections are offered to train this musical ideal. As the subjects are introduced, use your imitative skills to create a spirit of sharing and conversation. Wherever possible, play off the full scores, so you may glimpse deeper into the composer’s mind. Remain mindful of a fundamental principle promoting clarity - when your part is static, it is generally not as significant as the moving lines.

Concerto for tuba and piano (Wars and Rumors of War)
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This Tuba Concerto was commissioned in 2004 by tubist, Michael Fischer, and the Boise State University Symphony Orchestra. It was my fourth piece for Dr. Fischer, and is subtitled “Wars and Rumors of War”. Since I do tend to write “concept pieces”, there is some programmatic content that proceeds through the development of its underlying musical and emotional structure. Contrary to what its subtitle might suggest, this is not intended to be a political statement about war, but is rather intended to be a philosophical and even rather intimate examination of the personal effect that this type of activity has on those who participate in it.

Where Leaves and Birds a Music Spin
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Duet and Piano Instruments: Flute, Piano, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryFor Flute/Piccolo, Tuba and Piano
From the composer:
“Where Leaves And Birds A Music Spin” consists of six short movements, each loosely depicting a scene in nature.
- Borne On a Great Wind
- And the River Flows Ever Onwards
- Emerson’s Acorn
- Through Dawn Mist, A Doe
- Dauwtrappen
- Lithic Engines
The first scene is a fantasy of being carried on the wind, rushing over the landscape below. The second follows the journey of a river, through winding meandering paths to rapids. The third movement is based on a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay on History that reads, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” In the fourth, a scene unfolds of a foggy morning and the appearance of a doe. The word Dauwtrappen comes from Dutch and describes the concept of walking barefoot in the morning grass when the grass is still covered in dew. The final movement imagines the inner workings of the planet, with lithic, or rock and magma, engines driving continents, creating new lands, mountain ranges, as well as the slow destruction and recycling of the old.
Although I have suggested scenes with each title, I don’t intend these to be concrete depictions, and the listener should let their minds wander freely and create their own scenes as the piece progresses.

Onwards and Upwards
Composer: Gulino, Frank
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano:
In early 2017, Dr. Chris Combest approached me about writing a new piece for tuba and piano to be premiered at the 2018 U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, where Chris had been invited to perform as a guest soloist. As Chris and I discussed the different directions this new piece could take, one idea swiftly broke away from the pack and excited both of us very much.
"Onwards and upwards" is a favorite saying of Dr. Jerry Young, longtime professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he taught tuba and euphonium, among other things, from 1983 until 2016. In addition to being a friend and mentor to generations of low brass players, Jerry has enjoyed a multifaceted career as a soloist, clinician, lecturer, adjudicator, and additionally served as President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) and as Editor in Chief of the ITEA Journal. Chris expressed a desire to dedicate a new piece to Jerry, one that embodied the energy and optimism of this revered pedagogue and his "onwards and upwards" mantra. Over the course of his remarkable career, Jerry has been a profound influence on so many tuba players, and it is my absolute privilege to dedicate this new work to Dr. Jerry Young. Onwards and upwards!
