Contrasts in Blue
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Piano, Trombone, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryTrumpet, Trombone and Piano; A dramatic and colorful work in two picturesque movements: Evening Shadows and Summer Sea. The music is evocative of the imagery suggested by the titles of the movements and of the musical “blues” as well. The themes of shadows and water also suggest a kinship with the impressionist style of 100 years earlier. This composition is a “must” for advanced players! Cosmic Portraits
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Alto Sax, Clarinet, Flute, Tenor Sax
Genre: ContemporaryFlute, Clarinet, Alto Sax and Tenor Sax: Consists of 3 movements inspired by views of objects in the Milky Way galaxy. The titles of the first 2 movements, The Backbone of Night and The Pale Blue Dot are taken from the writings of the renowned astrophysicist, Carl Sagan. In his book, Cosmos, he describes how the !Kung Bushman in Botswana refer to the Milky Way as “the backbone of night.” The spine of the Milky Way often appears directly over the Kalahari Desert. The !Kung believe it to be the structural foundation of the heavens and that one of its functions in relation to Earth, among many, is that it holds up the darkness. In his book, The Pale Blue Dot, Sagan poetically describes a haunting view of Earth from a distant point in our galaxy. He puts our worldly concerns into cosmic perspective when he refers to all that has ever happened to human beings as occurring “on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.” The final movement, Orbitals, suggests celestial bodies revolving around one another in a fascinating cosmic dance. Moons orbiting planets, planets around suns, suns around other suns culminate in the swirling wonder of our galaxy. Crossroads
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Percussion, Trombone
Genre: Contemporary4 Trombones and 8 Percussion: The character of this music is strongly influenced by jazz and Latin music. The intriguing rhythms and soaring melodies combined with the implied theatre suggested by the staging, make this a sophisticated, yet accessible composition that is rewarding to perform and listen to. The 4 trombone parts may be performed with a quartet; however, it is desirable to have multiple players used on each part except in those areas where the score specifically specifies one player on a part for a particular passage. The unique instrumentation of this ensemble, combined with the prevalence of numerous colleges and universities that have trombone choirs and percussion ensembles, make this a concert work that is destined to become standard literature. "Somewhat contemporary sounding, with jazz and Latin influences, one's interest is held for the entirety. The two instrument families are well integrated throughout. Some sections are extremely lyrical in the percussion ensemble and rhythmic in the trombones, vice versa in others. This compositional technique allows for great clarity throughout the work. An enjoyable work for the performers and audience." -Susan Martin Tariq, Percussive Notes Magazine. Dedicated to Tom Brantley and Robert McCormick. The University of South Florida Trombone Choir and Percussion Ensemble premiered it in Tampa, Florida on January 21, 2012 under the direction of Robert McCormick. Currents
Composer: Buss, Howard J. Arranger: Simmons, Jamey
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Percussion
Genre: ContemporaryCURRENTS for 4 percussion is divided into 4 main sections and explores various perspectives of the principles of timbral and metric modulation. Timbral and metric “currents” in the music interact and blend in a manner analogous to currents in physical mediums. In addition, there is an element of implied theater. As the work begins, 3 percussionists are conducted in the traditional manner by the 4th. Next to the conductor, clearly visible in front of the main percussion battery, is a wooden board bridging two saw horses and a carpenter’s hand saw. These sit idly through much of the work, long enough to arouse curiosity in the audience as to the role of these prominently displayed construction objects. About midway through the composition the conductor lifts the saw overhead and strikes it. This serves as a cutoff gesture and also establishes that the saw is an “extension” of the conductor’s baton. The saw remains idle until the beginning of the fourth division of the work. During the final section it is used simultaneously as a “baton” and a percussion instrument by the director, who saws through wood, scrapes the saw’s teeth, slaps it on the board, strikes it with a mallet, and waves it in the air. At the very end of the work the conductor sets down the saw and walks behind the players to play the tam-tam. In doing so, he continues to direct the ensemble through the explosive conclusion. Percussion distribution: Perc. 1: 2 anvils (metal pipes may be substituted), 2 cow bells, snare drum, 2 suspended cymbals, tambourine, timpani (1), xylophone & wind chimes; Perc. 2: hi-hat, maracas, 2 suspended cymbals, triangle, large tam-tam, 4 tom toms, and vibraphone; Perc. 3: Bass drum, guiro, marimba, 2 suspended cymbals, temple blocks & triangle; Perc. 4 (conductor): Carpenter’s saw, a 2x2” wooden board & 2 saw horses. “A memorable combination of percussive artistry and theatrical class “ - The Washington Post. Dances and Interludes
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Guitar
Genre: ContemporaryDances and Interludes for solo guitar by Howard J. Buss was commissioned by guitarist, Robert Phillips. It features three dance-like sections preceded by a soulful introduction and separated by developmental interludes. The composer was inspired by styles from 3 countries: the songo from Cuba, bossa nova from Brazil, and rumba flamenco from Spain. Traditionally, the songo combines elements of the folkloric rumba with popular Cuban dance music. The Latin beat of the songo is specifically designed for the drum set. Although drums are not used in this piece, the first dance, ala songo, captures the choppy, energetic flavor of the Cuban model. The interlude that follows transitions to the mood for the second dance, ala bossa nova. This section has the smoother, more relaxed quality of this popular Brazilian style. It gradually gives way to the final dance, ala rumba flamenco. The energetic strumming patterns, colorful effects with muted strings, percussive interjections with the palm of the hand and fingertips capture the spirit of this exciting Andalusian genre. Dances and Interludes
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Cello, Guitar, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryGuitar and String Quartet (2 Violins, Viola and Cello)
Dances and Interludes for guitar and string quartet by Howard J. Buss was adapted from the composer’s solo guitar composition of the same name. It features three contrasting, dance-like sections that are preceded with a soulful introduction and separated by developmental interludes. For the dance music, the composer was inspired by styles from three countries: the songo from Cuba, bossa nova from Brazil, and rumba flamenco from Spain.
Traditionally, the songo combines elements of the folkloric rumba with popular Cuban dance music. The Latin beat of the songo is specifically designed for the drum set. Although drums are not used in this work, the first dance, ala songo, captures the choppy and energetic flavor of the Cuban model.
At first the interlude separating the first two dance sections continues with the vigor of the songo, but gradually its intensity is dialed back to set up the mood for the second dance, ala bossa nova. This section is characterized by the smoother, more relaxed quality of this popular Brazilian style. It gradually gives way to the final dance, ala rumba flamenco. The energetic strumming patterns, colorful effects, percussive interjections with the palm of the hand and fingertips capture the spirit of this exciting Andalusian genre.
Dances and Interludes for guitar and string quartet was premiered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on March 26, 2024 by members of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra: John Arnold, guitar; violinists Eliezer Gutman and Inna Eyzerovich; violist Pamela Jacobson; and cellist Hikaru Tamaki.

Desert Odyssey
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryThis music has a strong narrative quality. Because the continuous development of material takes the form of a chain of episodes, the music exhibits some of the attributes one might associate with a journey through the spectacular and awe-inspiring landscapes of the desert Southwest. Desert Odyssey was commissioned by The International Clarinet Association and was premiered at the organization’s ClarinetFest 1997 hosted by Texas Tech University. The performers were Marguerite Baker, clarinet; Richard Meek, bassoon; and Jennifer Garrett, piano. Dialogue
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryA modern yet tonal sonata in 3 movements: Florida Bound, Forest Whispers and Rendezvous. Although the musical material and its treatment involves great contrasts, on close analysis one discovers the tightly knit organic unity of this work. Florida Bound begins with energetic statements in both instruments followed by a rousing section characterized by driving rhythms and soaring melodies. A beautiful, melodious central section gives way to an exciting, developmental passage followed by a recapitulation of the opening section. The movement culminates with an exhilarating and fiery coda. The second movement, Forest Whispers, commences with an arabesque melody played on the clarinet with a background of lush, sustained chords on the piano. The mood becomes reflective and the pianist shifts from the piano to provide a soft, shimmering background for a gentle and beautiful melody (based upon a bird call) played on the clarinet. The piano reenters with a colorful passage involving delicate pedal shading and is joined by the clarinet in a variation of the opening arabesque to close the movement. Rendezvous is a jubilant rondo distinguished by flowing melodies supported by a lively accompaniment. Embedded in the final movement are references to thematic material from the previous movements. On the Maryland Contest List Level 4 - Movement 1 or 3. Divergences
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Clarinet, Viola
Genre: Contemporary"Divergences" for clarinet and viola by Howard J. Buss was written for clarinetist Allison Storochuk and violist Kirsten Weingartner Weiss. The 3 movements explore a wide array of moods and sonic atmospheres ranging from the mystical, to the contemplative, to soaring, vibrant passages: Recollections of Shared Times, Disparate Views, and Celebrations. The composer states, “The titles relate to a phenomenon that has long fascinated me: How is it that people such as siblings, who grow up in the same environment (home, family, teachers, and shared experiences), can turn out in later years to be very different from one another with their religious and political beliefs, preferences for food, travel, music, etc. This is addressed generally in the duo, which is designed to be musically solid without any extra-musical, programmatic connotations. However, I think the titles and general character of the music will connect with many listeners and may make them think about the evolution of their own personal relationships.” Score and parts are included.
