Incantation
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Percussion, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryIncantation evokes the mystery and enchantment of the sorcerer's ritual. Tightly structured sections contrast with free-form passages in a manner analogous to the interaction of order and mysticism in an incantation. Impromptu
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Clarinet, Marimba, Soprano Sax
Genre: ContemporaryCan be performed by Clarinet or Soprano Saxophone with Marimba: This engaging work is characterized by driving rhythms and ornate melodic lines. The opening motives in both parts undergo almost continuous development throughout the work, often giving the music a spontaneous, improvisatory feel. At times the music has a playful, almost frolicking quality. At other times mysterious and introspective passages contrast with aggressive, intense sections to create an atmosphere of moodiness. The lyrical melodies and interesting timbral contrasts between the instruments, combine with the tonal scheme of the music to make a sophisticated, yet audience-friendly, concert work. Two-mallet technique is prominent in the marimba part during the more intricate solo passages and there is some use of 3 and 4 mallets in those sections where chordal writing occurs. “A very accessible and enjoyable work.” - Percussive Notes. Millennium Visions
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and String quartet Instruments: Cello, Clarinet, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryIn 3 captivating movements: First Dawn, Meditation, and Quest, this composition was composed in the latter months of 1999 when most of the world was looking forward with eager anticipation to the turn of the Century, and in many minds, the Millennium. The conflict between man’s desire to “progress” in our technological age and his desire to connect to his spiritual past is symbolically represented by an array of musical styles and compositional procedures. The modern world is suggested by passages influenced by popular music styles and 12-tone technique. The longing for spirituality is manifested in the poignant lyricism of the work and its reliance on classical formal structures. Commissioned by ClarinetFest 2000, premiered by Tom Martin (Boston Symphony). Black Notes
Composer: Browning, Zack
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Alto Sax, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: Written for Joe Lulloff and inspired by jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s composition Blacknuss. In the introduction to Blacknuss Kirk states "there are 52 white notes and 36 black notes on the piano. We're going to play the black notes only, if you don't mind." The opposition suggested between black and white notes is expanded to include static and dynamic elements, consonant and dissonant harmonies, and pattered and non-patterned events. The title also refers to the middle section's exclusive use of the black notes of the piano. Vigorous swing rhythms contrast with sections of haunting beauty. Song Without Words
Composer: Alpher, David
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Cello, Piano, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporarySONG WITHOUT WORDS is a heartfelt and powerful tribute to the composer’s long-time friend and colleague, Lila Deis (1944-2010), in 3 movements. The first movement, "Loss", is self-explanatory; music of mourning. After this, and without any pause, the bleak mood is demolished by one huge chord, as though Lila were saying “Enough of that. Let’s have a party!” This super-loud chord ushers in a movement called "Perpetual Motion", which is a tribute to Lila’s nonstop upbeat energy and verve. Following a pause for breath, the third movement, "Perpetual Song", concludes the work with a kind of festival of melodies, a tribute to the unforgettable lyricism of Lila’s art. Cantilena
Composer: Alpher, David
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Flute, Viola
Genre: ContemporaryFrom the composer: “As its name suggests, Cantilena is all about singing, lyric lines. It’s a songlike dialogue, with contrasting tempi. While melodies are hardly foreign to either instrument, the viola-in the chamber literature and especially the symphonic literature-has had a surfeit of accompanimental, supporting figures. This unthrilling role is kept to a bare minimum in Cantilena. I tried to create a genuine duo, a give-and-take aural relationship between two beautiful instruments that rarely have the whole stage to themselves.” Cantilena was commissioned by flutist Sally Schlichting and was premiered by her and violist Sam Williams in November 2005. Tribute to Kerouac
Composer: Alpher, David
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Piano
Genre: ContemporaryTRIBUTE TO KEROUAC, version for solo piano by David Alpher was inspired by the work, life, and times of Jack Kerouac, “King of the Beat Generation.” Cast in 7 movements, this significant composition is hugely influenced by jazz. In the preface to the score the composer writes: "Kerouac demonstrated the epic contradiction of America: on the one hand its wild energy, joy of life, and expansiveness; on the other, its tendency to self-destruct. Tribute to Kerouac is my musical response to, and commemoration of, this important American writer who liked to describe himself as a 'jazz.poet.'"The ensemble version of this work (for clarinet, tenor sax, piano and string bass) is recorded on Ongaku Records #024-112. Oboe
Composer: Vogel, Roger C.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Oboe, Voice
Genre: ContemporaryWritten for oboist Dwight Manning. It is a humorous setting of Laurence McKinney’s poem Oboe. The comical effect of the music and text is enhanced by theatrical gestures by the performers. These are suggested in the score at the appropriate time. For example, before the music commences, the performers are given the following direction: "Enter with great dignity. The oboist should try several reeds before choosing one while the singer becomes somewhat impatient." From that point on there is an amusing tension created between the performers with directions such as (to the singer), "glare at oboist." Or (to the oboist), "Lip down as much as possible, shrug shoulders and begin next phrase." This entertaining composition is a hit with all types of audiences. It is certainly a piece that should be in the repertoire of every oboist. The vocal range is from D below the treble staff, to Gb above the staff. (The Gb is used only one time.)
