Brom Bones
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet, Eb Clarinet
Genre: Contemporary"Brom Bones" for clarinet choir (1 Eb, 3 Bb, 2 Eb Alto, 2 Bb Bass, and 1 Bb Contrabass) musically depicts the character and exploits of Washington Irving’s dashing prankster in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The work is in 5 movements: Following the energetic and heroic "Overture", in "The Smoke Out" tone clusters represent the buildup of smoke in Ichabod’s singing school. Chorale-like passages suggest the music of the singers in training. The movement ends in transition, as Brom Bones and his small band of pranksters gallop off to their next adventure. The third movement, "The Schoolhouse Caper," combines very aggressive and topsy-turvy passages with humorous, plodding interjections. "Ichabod’s Romance" begins as an enchanting unaccompanied ballad, which is abruptly disturbed by a cacophony of raucous clarinets, suggesting the whining of Brom’s mocking dog. Reverent hymn-like sections serve as the backdrop to heartfelt solo passages, which are again disturbed by Brom’s annoying dog. The movement ends as it began, with the beautiful bass clarinet solo. The intense final movement, "Night Encounter," depicts Ichabod’s frightening and fateful run-in with the Headless Horseman, suspected by some to be Brom Bones in disguise. Cadenzas and Interludes #1
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Alto Sax, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryViolin and Alto Saxophone
Cadenzas and Interludes #1 "Memories from the Isle of Mull" was composed by Howard J. Buss and dedicated to Drs. Rachael and Stephen Fischer. It was inspired by the composer’s visit to the picturesque Isle of Mull in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. Particularly memorable was a Saturday night Cèilidh* in the island’s capital, Tobermory, which included traditional music from the area. The Scottish musical influences are not direct in Cadenzas and Interludes #1; rather, their spirit is blended with Buss’s style of soaring lyricism with a modern bent.
*Pronounced, Kay-lee. In Gaelic, a Cèilidh is a social gathering featuring music, storytelling, and dance.

Cadenzas and Interludes #2
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Cornet, Euphonium, French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryCadenzas and Interludes #2 for brass quartet by Howard J. Buss may be performed by a standard brass quartet, or a quartet consisting of a Bb cornet, Eb tenor horn, Bb baritone (T.C.) and Bb euphonium (T.C.), or for a quartet derived from these two groups. The cornet player (or trumpet 1) has the option to double on the Flügelhorn between letters K and M.
During this composition each player performs a cadenza. Although the cadenzas are written out, the players may perform what is notated or may take liberties to personalize the music, keeping in mind that it is important that all of the cadenzas should have approximately the same duration.
Although the musical language is sophisticated, this concert work is constructed in a way to make it accessible to general audiences.

Café for piano
Composer: Douyon, Marc
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Piano
Genre: ContemporaryCAFÉ for solo piano by Marc Douyon is based on the Haitian folk tune “Manmam voyém pézé café.” The main theme quotes this folk melody, which is then developed with various compositional techniques. Original secondary themes and motives by the composer are an integral part of the colorful musical tapestry as well. Café is divided into two main parts, the Prelude and the Dance. This work begins with lyrical melodic fragments over a light chordal accompaniment. A recitative follows with a theme, which is also lyrical in nature. But, soon after, that same theme from the recitative takes on a happier character in a waltz accompanied by a walking bass. There, syncopated rhythm, sequences, chromatic harmony, and refrain-like passages take the dance to new heights until the end. Canticles of Saint Francis
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Clarinet
Genre: ContemporaryA tribute to St. Francis of Assisi, the venerated Catholic friar, preacher, founder of several Orders, and lover of animals and the environment. Canticles is in 4 movements, Prelude, Worldly Pleasures, Meditation, and A Blessed Legacy. It showcases the sonic beauty and technically agility of the clarinet. The character of the music ranges from soulful introspection to worldly exuberance. At the opening of the first movement and near the close of the last, sounds a four-note melodic fragment, G, F, D, and B, which is derived from St. Francis’ name at birth, Giovanni Francesco di Bernadone. This device is used sparingly so that when it does appear, it is given special prominence. Canticles of Saint Francis was composed during the autumn of 2012 and was commissioned by clarinetist Kathleen Jones for ClarinetFest 2013 in Assisi, Italy. Cantilena
Composer: Alpher, David
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Flute, Viola
Genre: ContemporaryFrom the composer: “As its name suggests, Cantilena is all about singing, lyric lines. It’s a songlike dialogue, with contrasting tempi. While melodies are hardly foreign to either instrument, the viola-in the chamber literature and especially the symphonic literature-has had a surfeit of accompanimental, supporting figures. This unthrilling role is kept to a bare minimum in Cantilena. I tried to create a genuine duo, a give-and-take aural relationship between two beautiful instruments that rarely have the whole stage to themselves.” Cantilena was commissioned by flutist Sally Schlichting and was premiered by her and violist Sam Williams in November 2005. Capriccio
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Clarinet, Percussion, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryA whimsical composition. the overall structure of the work is related to sonata-rondo form. Following an introduction, the frolicking Exposition unfolds only to be interrupted by a chorale-like episode followed by a paraphrase of the opening “thematic” material. The development section consists primarily of cadenzas for the percussionist, trombonist, and clarinetist respectively. (The cadenzas are separated by colorful transitional passages.) The clarinet cadenza is abruptly interrupted by the percussionist and trombonist leading to a section in Dixieland style. The composition concludes with a Recapitulation and Coda. Capriccio subtly pokes fun at the pyrotechnical characteristics exhibited by many contemporary compositions and the same time hints at a parallel with similar elements in Dixieland and jazz. The work was premiered in at the University of South Florida in Tampa by the composer on trombone, clarinetist Judy E. Buss, and percussionist Robert McCormick on November 24, 1981. The instrumentation includes 5 tom-toms, snare drum, tambourine, suspended cymbals, cowbells, triangle, tam-tam, bell tree, one timpani, vibraphone & bells. "Frolicking and freewheeling with 12-tone Dixieland to boot!" - The London Times Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $22.00
