Skirts and Flats...
Composer: Oxford, Josh
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Electronics
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
This piece is another attempt of mine to bridge the significant gap between dance music and concert music. There are large 12-tone sections, representative of concert music, juxtaposed over a dance club aesthetic. This is to pay tribute to the clubbing and partying atmosphere that is prevalent at Penn State, where Drew Welkie was attending school. The title is inspired by a comment that my sister and I overheard at a restaurant. A young lady, obviously incredibly angry and perturbed, said to a friend “I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE WEAR SKIRTS AND FLATS.”

Invisible Orthodoxy
Composer: Boots, Cornelius
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Clarinet, Electronics
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
Invisible Orthodoxy is the winner of 1st prize at the 2013 International Clarinet Association Composition Competition. It features extremes of density and space: the densities give way to the space. Ideally this piece will be performed in a small to medium sized recital hall where the performer can play acoustically (no microphone on the clarinet) and the playback will need to be in stereo. The timing of the tape and the solo part are very flexible in terms of how they should line up with each other for any given performance. The soloist should rehearse with the recording and establish their own timeline, similar to the one that is provided as an example, but ideally the soloist will build in a good amount of flexibility to their own version of the timeline. The core idea here is “don’t panic.” Audiences are very sensitive to the tension within a performer, and this piece is meant to prioritize the calm, solid core of the performer’s attitude and personality, i.e. the performer is calm and in control, both when playing very dense, rapid material and when leaving large gaps of space for the recording and the ambience of the performance space to speak louder than the solo for extended periods. IF you are getting ahead of the recording when practicing with it, just add more space between phrases and statements, particularly in movements II, IV, and V.
Specifically, when exiting and re-entering the stage area in movement IV, do not run, rush or hurry. There is plenty of time built into the tape part for you to get back to the stage, even if you went up to a balcony (which is recommended when possible) to play your half-clarinet part. note that you should slowly move between several locations to play these ad lib. statements, and slowly return to the stage during or after the truck sond. Optimally you would have a dress rehearsal in the performance space, rehearsing with the feel of the space and timing within it so you can rehearse not hurrying. Again in mvt. V, leave plenty of space and really take some expressive freedoms in terms of the timing of the solo. You should actually be feeling the energy field of your heart during this movement; audiences are also sensitive to that, so make yourself vast and humble.

Monolith
Composer: Hightower, Matt
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Electronics, Trumpet
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
From the composer:
Monolith was composed during the most tempestuous year in my lifetime. Daily headlines were something out of a dystopian or science fiction movie.
One such headline addressed Monoliths mysteriously appearing around the world. Some speculated aliens and others, vigilante artists. Either way, it was the rare headline that brought a bit of wonder and brevity to a emotionally draining year of pandemics and social unrest. My former colleague and friend, Kyle Millsap approached me in the fall of 2020 about writing a piece for an upcoming album of his that would feature music for solo trumpet with fixed media. Because of the pandemic, I had spent many more hours than usual in front of a computer with new, to me, software like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro so I thought, “sure, why not?”
The result of that collaboration was “Monolith.” Kyle is a towering figure in his own right standing at an impressive 6 feet 8 inches tall and a fan of popular science fiction shows like Dr. Who and Star Trek. Monolith is programmatic in nature and meant to depict towering Monoliths falling from the sky and crash landing on Earth and asking the age-old question: does extraterrestrial life exist? If so, can it co-exist with humanity?

Exit the Foundry
Composer: Hase, Ben
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Electronics
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
Exit the Foundry was originally commissioned for euphonium by Matthew Turek, a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student completing a research project that explored the psychological experience of composition. Turek commissioned works from seven student composers, offering them very few guidelines save the inclusion of his instrument, euphonium. Hase’s contribution, Exit the Foundry, incorporates three contrasting sonic elements. The first element, recorded and sampled mechanical sounds, includes various metallic hits, blowtorches, saws, fans, and other industrial noises. The second element, synthetic electronic instruments, consists of synth pads, leads, arpeggios, and an electronic drum ket. The third element is a low/mid register acoustic instrument that offers a contrastingly natural tone and lyrical voice. Hase produced the accompaniment track for Exit the Foundry in a computer based digital audio workstation, and included a multiphonic passage in the live instrument line to offer an aural bridge between the smooth timbre of a live instrument and the sometimes rough and piercing wanderings of the synthetic and mechanical sounds. At the start of the piece, each element battles for its place in the foreground, but inevitably a compromise is reached and all three elements meld into one coherent musical voice.

The Hang is On...
Composer: Oxford, Josh
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Electronics
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
The Hang is On… for Clarinet and CD attempts to bridge the gap between “dance” music and “concert” music. It is music that can work in a club or at a recital. This was inspired by the Michael Jackson hit “PYT”. The accompaniment was mixed by Colleen Harwood. – Josh Oxford
Josh Oxford, born in 1985, is a performer, composer, and arranger of myriad styles of music. Using his collection of vintage synthesizers, Josh is the leader of “The OXtet,” a jazz fusion ensemble that Oxford composes all the music for. Josh has studied with Janet Radmore, Jim Latten, Rick Eleck, Gordon Stout, and Ed Mann. He has performed throughout the central New York area on piano, percussion, and Moog synthesizer. Josh graduated with a BM in percussion performance from the Ithaca College School of Music in 2007. While at school, he performed in a variety of ensembles, including the Ithaca College Klezmer Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Jazz Lab. After suffering a debilitating car crash in 2010, Josh has devoted his energy to composing. His music can be heard on Aaron Tindall’s recording “This Is My House” and on The OXtet’s debut CD.

Agents of Espionage
Composer: Bramble, Zachary
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Clarinet, Electronics
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
Composer Zachary Bramble says, “As the title conveys, Agents of Espionage was inspired by the artful prowess of the spy. This work is composed for clarinet and electronic medium. The piece begins and ends illusively, carefully sneaking in and out until it finally ends with a stealthily fades out, much like the swiftness of a spy in pursuit. Though the piece has a distinct form, it includes somewhat of a programmatic feel with its ‘spy’ image becoming the work’s main engine. The clarinet is formidably cast as the spy as it jumps in and out unexpectedly, but also carries a major structural role when playing the main themes. The electronic track accompanies the clarinet and is essentially its rival, pushing the clarinet to its extremes in register, dynamics, and color. The interplay between the two instruments provides a dark, yet distinct musical image of the spy’s many talents, but also brings to light the many challenges that an agent of espionage must inevitably face.”

Diptych
Composer: Mothersole, Christopher
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Clarinet, Electronics
Genre: ContemporaryClarinet duet and digital effects
Diptych was conceived in 2019 from my first experiments of the sound possibilities for clarinet when using guitar effect pedals. The result is an edgy cross-genre clash between classical chamber music and rock, utilizing distortion and pitch shifting to launch the clarinet into new territory. Inspired by the sounds and riffs of 70s/80s classic rock bands, the driving rhythmic interplay creates a sense of competitiveness between the two parts akin to an electric guitar battle. This is intensified in the final section, continuing to push itself over the edge until it nears the point of spiraling out of control.
This work is originally intended to be performed with guitar effect pedals including distortion, pitch shifting (8vb), and a volume pedal to fade the effects in and out. Additional effects may be used if the resulting sound remains similar to the composer’s intention. The piece may be also performed without effects.

Ground Round
Composer: Snowden, Steven
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Electronics, Trombone
Genre: Contemporarywith downloadable backing track
Steven Snowden creates music for a diverse array of settings of settings inlcuding theater, dance, film, mutlimedia installations and the concert stage. Ground Round was inspired by the unique sound of cattle auctioneers in the United States. Their chant presents specific rhythms, pitches, and cadences that serve to intensify the auction process and encourage rapid bidding. The end result is a uniquely musical and mesmerizing form of communication. After listening and watching several auctions, Steven decided that this could be successfully explored by utilizing the unique voice-like characteristics of the trombone in conjunction with the live audio processing.
This piece employs live audio processing techniques via the Max/MSP programming language. The included program files can be executed with Max/MSP Runtime, which can be downloaded for free.
