Sci-Fi Percussives
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Percussion
Genre: Contemporary"SCI-FI PERCUSSIVES for 12 percussion is a riveting fantasy in 3 movements: ""Prelude to Contact"", ""Alien Probes"" & ""Aggressions"". The composer states, “I have always been fascinated by the human ability to disregard the tangible in order to embrace the intangible. Whether the intangibility involves the belief in a Deity, the enthusiastic acceptance of a conspiracy theory, or being engrossed in a movie about something as implausible as a Martian invasion, a leap of faith is required to enter the magical realm of the imagination.” - Howard J. Buss Percussion distribution: Perc. 1: Orchestra bells, conga drum & 2 suspended cymbals; Perc. 2: Xylophone & wood block; Perc. 3: Marimba; Perc. 4: bongos, 2 suspended cymbals, slapstick, air raid siren; Perc. 5: Vibraphone; Perc. 6: Marimba; Perc. 7: Timpani (4), cowbell & crotales (one octave); Perc. 8: Roto toms, tam-tam, lion roar, bass drum, maracas, 2 suspended cymbals, triangle, bell tree, snare drum & hi-hat; Perc. 9: Orchestra bells, tubular bells (chimes), sleigh bells, guiro, temple blocks & maracas, Perc. 10: xylophone & snare drum; Perc. 11: Marimba; Perc. 12: Bongos, 2 suspended cymbals & ratchet. For the most part, the positioning of the players is for the sake of balance; however, there are sections in the music where the parts are choreographed for special sonic and visual effects. This music appeals to all types of audiences: the music is sophisticated , yet because of its programmatic nature and the dazzling and powerful musical imagery, it will speak to anyone who still has a pulse! Prayer
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary"This beautiful, meditative work is designed to be performed in a concert venue or as a musical offering in a house of worship. Its reverent quality is enhanced by the rich sonority and organ-like quality of the large tuba-euphonium ensemble. The musical language of Prayer is sophisticated, yet audience-friendly. It begins with a lyrical 12-tone melody that is symbolic of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The dodecaphonic reference also relates to the instrumentation: From the pickup to measure 70 to the end, the twelve pitches of the opening melody are presented with each player assigned to one pitch. When performing this closing passage it is important that the 12 players shape the 12 separate pitches into one lyrical melody (as it was presented at the beginning of the piece by player one). This composition is accessible to amateur and high school-level players. Showdown
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryComposed during the latter months of 2009 for Nathaniel Brickens, The University of Texas-Austin Trombone Choir, and the 2010 International Trombone Festival. This entertaining work is a musical depiction of two opposing groups of cowboys. Each group is comprised of a soloist and 4 “companions.” Following the initial fanfare, the groups individually showcase their musical prowess. Eventually they clash in a riveting sonic “gunfight.” Showdown mixes Buss’ unique style of soaring lyricism, energetic rhythms, and colorful harmonies with forceful and idiomatic writing for the trombones. The result is sure to please both the audience and performers! Another World Stood Here
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Alto Flute, Bass Flute, Flute, Piccolo
Genre: Contemporary"Another World Stood Here" for flute ensemble (piccolo, five C, alto, bass and optional contrabass) by Howard J. Buss was composed immediately after an ancient oak tree was removed from his neighbor’s yard. The composer states, “The crew worked for several days to dismantle and haul away the enormous tree. I had lived next to it for a quarter of a century. The morning after they finished the job I visited the site were the mighty tree once stood and felt a deep sense of loss. It had become part of my life, and I reflected on how it served as home for countless birds and other animals, how it survived numerous hurricanes and lightning storms, and remembered the precious shade it provided during the long Florida summers. It is sorely missed. This work is dedicated to the memory of this ancient friend.” Because of its modest technical demands and musical sophistication, this audience-friendly work is appropriate for both intermediate-level and advanced flute choirs. (5’) Grade IV. Score and parts included. Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin.$20.00
