4th Avenue Suite
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT4th Avenue Suite is a composition set for three euphoniums and three tubas. Its inspiration comes from a vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when we were staying in a rental house on 4th Avenue. The tunes are derived from a sequence of numbers used to open the digital door lock of the house for that week. The numbers, 3 6 8 2 4 3, are employed by their numerical placement in a musical scale. I thought: “What if; these numbers could be made into a tune (or several)?” The entire suite is not confined to these notes, but the tunes in the movements have grown out of this sequence. To construct several generations from a set of notes seemed enough, so no attempt has been made to relate the movements to events or situations. The movements are subtitled as follows: I. Intrada; II. Intermezzo; III. Minuet; and IV. Finale. The challenge level is Medium to Medium Difficult. All players are utilized in important roles and the composition offers various combinations of featured players, sections with just euphoniums or just tubas, and total ensemble. Learn More

Jason and the Golden Fleece
Composer: Raum, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary2 Euphs, 2 F Tubas, 2 C Tubas and Percussion; Commissioned by Symphonia, conducted by Winston Morris, With assistance from the Sasktchewan Arts Board. The first movement, Jason and the Argonauts, represents the crew of heroes on the "Argo," the ship built to carry them in their quest for the Golden Fleece.
The Symplegades, or clashing islands, impeded the entrance to the Euxine Sea. These small rocky islands floated on the surface of the water, and in their tossings and heavings occasionally came together to crush anything caught between them. Jason, on the advice of Phineus, let a dove fly through the islands first, and when they clashed, just missing her, Jason passed safely through on the rebound.
Medea was the beautiful and seductive daughter of the Colchian king who owned the powerful sorceress and gives Jason a charm to help him complete the tasks her father demanded that Jason do to win the Fleece. One of those tasks, Sowing the Dragon's Teeth, required that Jason yoke two fire-breathing bulls to a plow and sow the teeth of the dragon which Cadmus had slain and from which would grow a crop of armed men. When this belligerent army rose from the ground, Jason, using the charm Medea had given him, caused such confusion in the ranks of his assailants that they turned on each other until there were none left.
The final movement, The Golden Fleece, comes as a tribute to the success of the group of heroes in their long and difficult quest.

Tristan Fantasy
Composer: Wagner, Richard Arranger: Jeurissen, Herman
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: French Horn
Genre: Classical6 Horns; Wagner transcriptions always seem to be ideal for Horn choir. This is no exception. The Tristan Fantasy is based on some fragments of Wagner's opera, "Tristan and Isolde". Since Wagner asked for doubling or tripling of the Horn parts in the hunting fanfare, one can play this arrangement with 6, 12, 18, or even more Horn players. Suite
Composer: Stravinsky, Igor Arranger: Micklich, Albie
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Alto Sax, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute, Oboe
Genre: ContemporaryFlute, Oboe, Alto Saxophone, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Bassoon
“I have been very fortunate and professionally blessed to have five wonderful woodwind colleagues at Arizona State University: Elizabeth Buck, flute; Christopher Creviston, saxophone; Joshua Gardner, clarinet; Martin Schuring, oboe; and, Robert Spring, clarinet. Together, we presented numerous woodwind recitals featuring all six of us in various combinations of duos, trios, quartets, and quintets. However, until now, we were never able to share the stage simultaneously. To remedy this, I arranged five movements of Stravinsky’s Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra for the instrumentation of the ASU woodwind faculty.
The source material is derived from Igor Stravinsky’s Three Easy Pieces (1915) and Five Easy Pieces (1917). These compositions were written as four-hand piano educational pieces for Stravinsky’s children. Stravinsky would play the more difficult accompaniments while his children played the simple melodies.
Stravinsky composed arrangements of several movements using these short eight pieces, but the best-known arrangements are Suite No. 1 (1921) and Suite No. 2 (1925) for Small Orchestra. The five dance movements in Suite for Woodwind Sextet are “true Stravinsky” in their wit, charm, and humor. “

Souvenir de Porto Rico
Composer: Gottschalk, Louis Arranger: Renshaw, Gretchen
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ClassicalEEETTT
Arranger Gretchen Renshaw says, “Piano prodigy and composer Louis Gottschalk struggled to gain acceptance in Western music due to his American heritage. However, through extensive traveling and performing, he became the first North American to earn an international reputation as a pianist and composer. Gottschalk’s travels took him to Puerto Rico in 1857-58, where he became inspired by the music he heard there. This inspiration led to Souvenir de Porto Rico, a virtuosic character piece originally written for piano. The piece features two themes – one in march style, the other lyrical – and Gottschalk subjects these themes to a series of variations which he arranges in an arch form… Arranged here for tuba-euphonium ensemble, this exciting work will challenge players technically and stylistically as they work to find Gottschalk’s Puerto Rican groove.”

High Priest
Composer: Tyner, McCoy Arranger: Johnson and Brown
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Bass, Drum Set, Piano, Tuba
Genre: Jazz6 Tubas, Piano, Bass and Drum Set
“The High Priest is McCoy’s tribute to the high priest of Jazz- Thelonious Monk. The form is an eleven bar blues.”
- Howard Johnson
High Priest was recorded, with Howard Johnson playing tuba, in December 1967. This recorded album, Tender Moments, was subsequently released in 1968 on the Blue Note label. Later in 1992 on the Turning Point record album, High Priest was recorded again featuring McCoy Tyner’s big band, which included Howard Johnson on tuba and as an arranger.
Howard Johnson’s jazz tuba ensemble is envisioned as a tuba choir- with tubas in F, E flat, CC, and BB flat- that encourages tuba players to learn to play in the upper register. His charts were originally written for his tuba jazz ensemble, Gravity, formed in 1968 with Howard Johnson as solo lead tuba. The charts can in fact be performed with euphoniums; but he formed his group, made his arrangements and developed this specific instrumentation 50 years ago as a statement about tubas and prefers to hear his arrangements played in this configuration, encouraging tuba players to develop the range required. His most important advice is that whatever instrumentation is used, make it fun and find the best jazz rhythm section!

Gravity
Composer: Writer, Justin
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryGravity for tuba ensemble (EEETTT) is a musical rendition of what goes up must come down. This rhythmically aggressive work features the attacking quality of the tuba through the use of hard articulations and fast double tonguing. Slight pause from the onslaught of motivic variation comes in the form of a five-part fugal section that brings “gravity” to its lowest point. The work ends with one final variation where high notes attempt to resist the force of gravity.

Jubilance
Composer: Miller, Rodney
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryAn uplifting and accessible work, a true joy to play and listen to. Following an introductory pyramid fanfare, the composition is developed in ABA form. With rhythmic energy, interesting harmonies, and a bright tempo, the first theme captures the spirit of jubilant excitement. The contrasting second theme allows the ensemble to demonstrate some haunting sonorities as the piece slowly builds, utilizing both minor and modal harmonies. The concluding section marks the return of the opening theme and culminates in a rousing finish. Salutations
Composer: Kirby, Benedict
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT Salutations was written in the fall of 2018 for the “Young At Heart” massed tuba & euphonium choir at the 2019 International Tuba & Euphonium Conference held in late May on the campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. The music is in 6 parts and is intended for lots of players with numbers equally balanced among the parts. It will also work just fine with one on a part. Dynamics and articulations should be very literally observed as the music weaves its way from special “wind” effects into actual playing. The fact of the music being a concert fanfare is only actually musically revealed when we reach bar 56. All music before that should always be played with a leading/forecasting quality - especially beginning at bar 46 and the next 10 bars of music. Bar 56 is marked “Brassy!” and should contrast very much from the preceding music. Bar 60 opens up wide and should be played broadly. A tutti unison, more counterpoint and changes of key also need a terraced ramping up of energy as the music approaches a sort of awe-inspired “Young At Heart” theme (sing those words in your mind and you’ll know what I mean!) which is heard at bar 88 (we first hear it at bar 31). More fanfare gesturing and a brief recap of the introduction bring the piece to a grand conclusion!
