Triptych for Violin and Piano
Composer: Sterrett, David
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Violin
Genre: Contemporary"Triptych for Violin and Piano" by David M. Sterrett. A “triptych” is a musical collage of three contrasting movements unified by a common musical element – in the case of this piece, each movement is in A-B-C-B-A form. While the movements are unified in matching formal scheme, each exudes a different style and character. The first, Scherzo, jokes and jabs with jagged lines and snapping gestures that are sometimes humorous and sometimes aggressive. The second movement, Rhapsody, is the emotional centerpiece of the work and contrasts the snarky character of the Scherzo with gentle, lush, lyrical lines which convey a sense of loss and longing, and ultimately the restorative power of hope. The final movement, Tarantella, follows with its own unique style, a flashy, quick and energetic dance, slightly dark and grim in character, though at times also joyous and playful. Piano score and solo part is included. (11’40”) Grade V. Hatshepsut's Chant and Dance
Composer: Frank, Robert
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bassoon, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano; Queen Hatshepsut was one of the most enigmatic and interesting figures in ancient Egyptian history. She was the only woman to ever rule as "pharaoh" at a time when only males were allowed to hold that position. For this reason she is often depicted in carvings and drawings of the period wearing a beard or a man's clothing. She also had a secret love affair with an architect named Senmut, who designed many beautiful buildings in her day, including the dramatic Deir El-Bahari temple carved out of a jagged cliff in Thebes. Since no music of that period survives, this work is an imagining of a secret chant and private dance Hatshepsut may have performed for Senmut. The work begins with strange and beguiling chants in the bassoon, including exotic "multiphonics." (Bassoon fingerings for the mutiphonics are included with the score and part.) These are accompanied in the piano with musical gestures reflecting the closing of large, stone, tomb doors, marches of the temple priests, and amagical sprinkling of ancient chords. The dance that follows is in the spirit of the infamous "Dance of the Seven Veils," in which, during each section the female dancer sheds another layer of covering and increases the pace. beginning slowly, each of the seven sections build in peed and motion leader both the dancer and her audience into a furious, wild, spinning finale. Postcards from Vienna
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: Commissioned for and premiered at ClarinetFest 1998 by Kathleen Gardiner (at the time with the Buffalo Philharmonic). It is in 4 picturesque movements: Around the Ring, Hundertwasser House - In Transit, Tombs of Honor, and Street Scenes, and was inspired by the composer's 1996 visit to Vienna. The first movement, Around the Ring, is suggestive of the energy and excitement of traveling on the Ring, a major transportation artery that loops around the city center. The music is characterized by driving rhythms and jazzy melodic flourishes. The second movement is divided into 2 main sections: Hundertwasser House is a tribute to the esteemed Viennese artist, Hundertwasser. The title refers specifically to the imaginative apartment house designed by this innovative artist whose colorful paintings are displayed in the adjacent Kunsthaus Wien. In Transit is reminiscent of a short hop on the Underground (subway). Tombs of Honor, the third movement, was inspired by the beautiful and stately cemetery, Zentralfriedhof, where many great musicians from Vienna's glorious past are buried next to one another- Beethoven, Brahms, Johann Strauss, Hugo Wolf, Schubert, and the clarinetist Mühlfeld to name a few. The capricious final movement, Street Scenes, was inspired by the happenings on the bustling Kärtnerstrasse, a pedestrian walkway frequented by street musicians and other artists. Included are references to segments of themes by various Viennese composers. At times these excerpts are tossed about in a kaleidoscopic manner. On other occasions they serve as the basis for organic musical development, such as when a metrically altered theme from the first Brahms Clarinet Sonata becomes the subject of a fugue Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $18.00

Black Notes
Composer: Browning, Zack
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Alto Sax, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: Written for Joe Lulloff and inspired by jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s composition Blacknuss. In the introduction to Blacknuss Kirk states "there are 52 white notes and 36 black notes on the piano. We're going to play the black notes only, if you don't mind." The opposition suggested between black and white notes is expanded to include static and dynamic elements, consonant and dissonant harmonies, and pattered and non-patterned events. The title also refers to the middle section's exclusive use of the black notes of the piano. Vigorous swing rhythms contrast with sections of haunting beauty. Dialogue
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryA modern yet tonal sonata in 3 movements: Florida Bound, Forest Whispers and Rendezvous. Although the musical material and its treatment involves great contrasts, on close analysis one discovers the tightly knit organic unity of this work. Florida Bound begins with energetic statements in both instruments followed by a rousing section characterized by driving rhythms and soaring melodies. A beautiful, melodious central section gives way to an exciting, developmental passage followed by a recapitulation of the opening section. The movement culminates with an exhilarating and fiery coda. The second movement, Forest Whispers, commences with an arabesque melody played on the clarinet with a background of lush, sustained chords on the piano. The mood becomes reflective and the pianist shifts from the piano to provide a soft, shimmering background for a gentle and beautiful melody (based upon a bird call) played on the clarinet. The piano reenters with a colorful passage involving delicate pedal shading and is joined by the clarinet in a variation of the opening arabesque to close the movement. Rendezvous is a jubilant rondo distinguished by flowing melodies supported by a lively accompaniment. Embedded in the final movement are references to thematic material from the previous movements. On the Maryland Contest List Level 4 - Movement 1 or 3. Sonata della speranza
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bassoon, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano; Sonata della speranza “Sonata of Hope” for bassoon and piano by Howard J. Buss was written for Dr. Ann Shoemaker and is dedicated to the memory of bassoonist Dr. Eric Van der Veer Varner. When work on this sonata began in the autumn of 2019 it was being composed for Eric, a friend of the composer. After Eric’s sudden, tragic death shortly thereafter, the project was shelved. Work resumed in the spring during the global Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, Italy was the epicenter of the crisis and the composer, having friends living there, was deeply concerned with their welfare. As the composition developed, Italy overcame the worst of the ravages of the disease, and the pandemic took firm hold in the United States. The composer wrote much of Sonata della speranza while at home in Florida adhering to governmental shelter-in-place orders. The three movements address an array of emotions the composer experienced following the death of his friend and during the pandemic. The optimistic character of “Auspicious Sunrise” radiates the hope imbued in the morning glow of a new day. The musing nature of “Introspective” reflects the inner dialogue often experienced during the extended periods of social isolation. The buoyant, and at times whimsical third movement, “Serendipitous,” combines elements from the previous movements with new material: The music exudes an optimistic, forward thrust, while incorporating feelings from the daily experiences of living through the pandemic. Seeking Ithaca
Composer: Guzzo, Anne Marie
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Alto Sax, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: An exciting work inspired by the adventures of Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey. It is cast in 2 programmatic movements, Calypso's Gift and Adventure. In the first movement Odysseus is stranded on the Calypso's island, where he becomes enchanted by the beautiful goddess. Calypso is in love with Odysseus, but she makes the decision to let him continue his adventures and find his family again. Musically, the mournful yet proud opening saxophone melody employs both traditional sounds and extended techniques such as key pops and air-tones. This melody, in one form or another, becomes the basis for most of the composition, which is harmonically fleshed out by extended chords in the piano part. A slower second half, marked "Distantly, sadly," recalls motives from the opening section, and creates a sense of loss, signified by the sax's pitchless air-tone at the conclusion. The exciting second movement, Adventures, is inspired by Odysseus' encounter with the Cyclops. This piece is a"must" for the advanced saxophonist!
