Triptych for Violin and Piano
Composer: Sterrett, David
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Violin
Genre: Contemporary"Triptych for Violin and Piano" by David M. Sterrett. A “triptych” is a musical collage of three contrasting movements unified by a common musical element – in the case of this piece, each movement is in A-B-C-B-A form. While the movements are unified in matching formal scheme, each exudes a different style and character. The first, Scherzo, jokes and jabs with jagged lines and snapping gestures that are sometimes humorous and sometimes aggressive. The second movement, Rhapsody, is the emotional centerpiece of the work and contrasts the snarky character of the Scherzo with gentle, lush, lyrical lines which convey a sense of loss and longing, and ultimately the restorative power of hope. The final movement, Tarantella, follows with its own unique style, a flashy, quick and energetic dance, slightly dark and grim in character, though at times also joyous and playful. Piano score and solo part is included. (11’40”) Grade V. Dances and Interludes
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Guitar
Genre: ContemporaryDances and Interludes for solo guitar by Howard J. Buss was commissioned by guitarist, Robert Phillips. It features three dance-like sections preceded by a soulful introduction and separated by developmental interludes. The composer was inspired by styles from 3 countries: the songo from Cuba, bossa nova from Brazil, and rumba flamenco from Spain. Traditionally, the songo combines elements of the folkloric rumba with popular Cuban dance music. The Latin beat of the songo is specifically designed for the drum set. Although drums are not used in this piece, the first dance, ala songo, captures the choppy, energetic flavor of the Cuban model. The interlude that follows transitions to the mood for the second dance, ala bossa nova. This section has the smoother, more relaxed quality of this popular Brazilian style. It gradually gives way to the final dance, ala rumba flamenco. The energetic strumming patterns, colorful effects with muted strings, percussive interjections with the palm of the hand and fingertips capture the spirit of this exciting Andalusian genre. Atmospheres
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryA colorful, captivating duo in 3 movements: The Wakening; One Sunday, Long Ago; and On-the-Edge. It was commissioned by the Double Take Duo. The first movement begins with a mysterious and turbulent section featuring dramatic contrasts of dynamics and mood. Eventually this gives way to passages with a hint of playfulness. It culminates in an intriguing dance-like section with a distinctively Latin flare. One Sunday, Long Ago is divided into 2 main parts: the first uses lyrical, soaring melodies played on the Flügelhorn over a delicate ostinato on the maracas. Notable about the percussion part in this section is that the percussionist also plays the bongos and tambourine (setting on a table) with the bodies of the maracas, and the suspended cymbals with the butts of the maraca handles. It ends with an intriguing interplay between the marimba and the Flügelhorn, creating a beautiful, and almost meditative, atmosphere. The final movement is energetic, highly dramatic, and is obviously influenced by jazz. The percussion instruments used include marimba (to low A), two suspended cymbals, bongos, temple blocks, tambourine, maracas, wood block, tam-tam, cow bell, and triangle. The marimba part calls mostly for two-mallet technique. When 4 mallets are employed (in the third movement) sparingly, they are used in repeated chordal patterns. ATMOSPHERES is recorded on the Double Take Duo CD Atmospheres and on the CD Spanish Memoirs by Diego Arias and Yu-Jung Chung. It is a sophisticated work with audience appeal! American Phoenix is an attractive addition to a solo program or as a feature piece for a percussion recital. Heavens Awaken, The
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and String quartet Instruments: Bassoon, Cello, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryDedicated to bassoonist Arnold Irchai. The structure of this exciting work is highly symbolic in that it was inspired by the details of the visions of the priest Ezekiel while living with the Jewish exiles in Babylon. Ezekiel saw a powerful, glowing, and complex entity appear in the sky out of a “great cloud.” He believed it to be an appearance of God: “Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.” (Ezekiel 1:5 KJV) The formal scheme of The Heavens Awaken is programmatic in the sense that the sequence of events described in the vision is musically represented in a general way. The serene opening gradually becomes mysterious and gives way to a series of passages that serve as an ominous portent to the arrival of the airborne object. The 4 string instruments, each with 4 strings, 4 tuning pegs, and human-like body shape symbolize the 4 “creatures” of the vision. The bassoon represents the “voice” of what Ezekiel believes is God. It should be noted that many people also have interpreted his vision as a sighting of a UFO, described with the insights and vocabulary of the day. “This significant new addition to the bassoon and string quartet literature is a “must for the advanced bassoonist!” Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $30.00
