Enigmatic Triptych
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet
Genre: Contemporaryfor Trumpet, Horn and Trombone
Enigmatic Triptych for trumpet, horn, and trombone by Howard J. Buss is dedicated to trombonist Dr. Daniel Cherry. The word “Enigma” is derived from the Greek word ainissesthai, meaning "to speak in riddles." This three-movement brass trio was composed in late 2022 and early 2023, an uncertain time when it appeared that the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic could be behind us. To reveal much more regarding the enigmatic connotations of the work would lessen the intrigue. The titles of the movements, Sanguine, Mystic, and Eccentric, may offer the listener some clues as to the “riddle” behind the music. Enigmatic Triptych received its world premier on March 18, 2024 in the Performing Arts Center of West Chester University of Pennsylvania by Dr. Amy Cherry, trumpet, Dan Cherry trombone; and Elizabeth Pfaffle, horn.

Dances and Interludes
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Cello, Guitar, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryGuitar and String Quartet (2 Violins, Viola and Cello)
Dances and Interludes for guitar and string quartet by Howard J. Buss was adapted from the composer’s solo guitar composition of the same name. It features three contrasting, dance-like sections that are preceded with a soulful introduction and separated by developmental interludes. For the dance music, the composer was inspired by styles from three countries: the songo from Cuba, bossa nova from Brazil, and rumba flamenco from Spain.
Traditionally, the songo combines elements of the folkloric rumba with popular Cuban dance music. The Latin beat of the songo is specifically designed for the drum set. Although drums are not used in this work, the first dance, ala songo, captures the choppy and energetic flavor of the Cuban model.
At first the interlude separating the first two dance sections continues with the vigor of the songo, but gradually its intensity is dialed back to set up the mood for the second dance, ala bossa nova. This section is characterized by the smoother, more relaxed quality of this popular Brazilian style. It gradually gives way to the final dance, ala rumba flamenco. The energetic strumming patterns, colorful effects, percussive interjections with the palm of the hand and fingertips capture the spirit of this exciting Andalusian genre.
Dances and Interludes for guitar and string quartet was premiered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on March 26, 2024 by members of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra: John Arnold, guitar; violinists Eliezer Gutman and Inna Eyzerovich; violist Pamela Jacobson; and cellist Hikaru Tamaki.

Spectrum
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Percussion
Genre: Contemporary"The structure of this one-movement work is suggestive of a journey through a sequence of colorful sonic landscapes. Keith Koons and the U.C.F. Percussion Ensemble lead by Thad Anderson premiered Spectrum in Orlando, Florida on April 14, 2015.
This composition is a showcase for the bass clarinet as well as the percussion ensemble. The music utilizes the entire practical range of the bass clarinet, exploring its impressive array of expressive capabilities. From the haunting beauty its low register to the agile brilliance of its upper range, this work reveals the great diversity of moods that can be created with the instrument as well the salient technical characteristics that distinguish it from the other woodwinds. The percussion ensemble, even when used as an accompaniment for the soloist, employs a wide array of timbres and textures. An undercurrent of energy and suspense is added to the musical tapestry as a result of the inherent tension between the soloist and the potentially overpowering might of the percussion battery."

Dialogue
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryA modern yet tonal sonata in 3 movements: Florida Bound, Forest Whispers and Rendezvous. Although the musical material and its treatment involves great contrasts, on close analysis one discovers the tightly knit organic unity of this work. Florida Bound begins with energetic statements in both instruments followed by a rousing section characterized by driving rhythms and soaring melodies. A beautiful, melodious central section gives way to an exciting, developmental passage followed by a recapitulation of the opening section. The movement culminates with an exhilarating and fiery coda. The second movement, Forest Whispers, commences with an arabesque melody played on the clarinet with a background of lush, sustained chords on the piano. The mood becomes reflective and the pianist shifts from the piano to provide a soft, shimmering background for a gentle and beautiful melody (based upon a bird call) played on the clarinet. The piano reenters with a colorful passage involving delicate pedal shading and is joined by the clarinet in a variation of the opening arabesque to close the movement. Rendezvous is a jubilant rondo distinguished by flowing melodies supported by a lively accompaniment. Embedded in the final movement are references to thematic material from the previous movements. Currents
Composer: Buss, Howard J. Arranger: Simmons, Jamey
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Percussion
Genre: ContemporaryCURRENTS for 4 percussion is divided into 4 main sections and explores various perspectives of the principles of timbral and metric modulation. Timbral and metric “currents” in the music interact and blend in a manner analogous to currents in physical mediums. In addition, there is an element of implied theater. As the work begins, 3 percussionists are conducted in the traditional manner by the 4th. Next to the conductor, clearly visible in front of the main percussion battery, is a wooden board bridging two saw horses and a carpenter’s hand saw. These sit idly through much of the work, long enough to arouse curiosity in the audience as to the role of these prominently displayed construction objects. About midway through the composition the conductor lifts the saw overhead and strikes it. This serves as a cutoff gesture and also establishes that the saw is an “extension” of the conductor’s baton. The saw remains idle until the beginning of the fourth division of the work. During the final section it is used simultaneously as a “baton” and a percussion instrument by the director, who saws through wood, scrapes the saw’s teeth, slaps it on the board, strikes it with a mallet, and waves it in the air. At the very end of the work the conductor sets down the saw and walks behind the players to play the tam-tam. In doing so, he continues to direct the ensemble through the explosive conclusion. Percussion distribution: Perc. 1: 2 anvils (metal pipes may be substituted), 2 cow bells, snare drum, 2 suspended cymbals, tambourine, timpani (1), xylophone & wind chimes; Perc. 2: hi-hat, maracas, 2 suspended cymbals, triangle, large tam-tam, 4 tom toms, and vibraphone; Perc. 3: Bass drum, guiro, marimba, 2 suspended cymbals, temple blocks & triangle; Perc. 4 (conductor): Carpenter’s saw, a 2x2” wooden board & 2 saw horses. “A memorable combination of percussive artistry and theatrical class “ - The Washington Post.
