Three Dances
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryIn 3 movements : Jazz Waltz, Slow Dance, and Irish Jig. In this charming and entertaining work the composer envisions two people dancing with one another. The "lead" in each dance is shared in alternation between the two instrumentalists. The first movement, Jazz Waltz, is in ABA form with the middle section being a waltz in 4/4. The melody is introduced by the bassoon (or trombone) and is passed back and forth throughout. In the enchanting second movement, Slow Dance, the musical material undergoes continuous development with the equality of the parts being paramount. The energetic final movement, Irish Jig, opens with an intriguing mixed meter section which leads to the rousing jig. It concludes with an exciting and frenzied accelerando and fugue. This work is fun to perform and has a great audience appeal! The clarinet and trombone version is recorded on the CD Dances and Dreams [Mark Records 8290-MCD] Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $16.00

Three Jazzicals
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Soprano Sax, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryDedicated to tubist Jay Hunsberger. This colorful composition is cast in 3 movements - To Bop or Not to Bop, Sounds from the Cool Smoke, and Hotish. The composer states, “ In Three Jazzicals it was not my aim to create a specific hybrid style by synthesizing jazz and modern classical music; rather, my intent was to systematically strip away the fundamental elements of jazz to explore at what point the music ceases being jazz and becomes classical. The style of Three Jazzicals is the resultant this procedure. It is understood that because the subject of what constitutes jazz (there are so many kinds) is so complex, depending upon the background and views of the listener, Three Jazzicals will sound jazzy (in varying degrees) to most, and mostly classical to some.” The instruments employed have been traditionally used in jazz. However, stripped away is the rhythm section; traditional chord progressions; melodic, rhythmic and formal clichés; and improvisation. Among the elements kept is the allowance for personal expression through each player’s tone, inflections, and articulations. The players are specifically asked not to swing at any time. Liturgical Impressions
Composer: Frank, Robert
Instrumentation: Solo and Organ Instruments: Organ, Trumpet
Genre: Contemporarywith Organ: In 3 movements: Introit, Sanctus, and Gloria. Each movement expresses the nature of that part of the liturgy to the composer. Introit opens with a formal invocation via a melodic 12-tone row in the trumpet, which warms into flowing melodies when joined by the glowing sonorities of the organ’s chorale. In Sanctus the quiet but powerful nature of reverent worship, images of the holy flames above the Ark of the Covenant, and the definition of holy: “being set apart” find musical expression. In the third movement, Gloria, brilliant gestures of unbridled joyful praise burst forth, culminating in the final section where themes from all three movements combine to form a thrilling conclusion. Liturgical Impressions has been recorded by trumpeter Grant Peters and organist Charles Ore on the CD “Friendly Amendments: New Music for Trumpet and Organ by American Composers.” Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $18.00

Passage to Eden
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Clarinet, French Horn, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryThis dramatic and colorful work is cast in 4 continuous movements. The mood of the first is of ominous significance, as if one was preparing to embark on an arduous journey. The music is lyrical, yet contains an undercurrent of tension and anticipation. The second movement is characterized by a contrapuntal dialogue between the clarinet and the horn over a driving ostinato in the piano. This section is hugely influenced by jazz. The lyrical and animated counterpoint sounding over the running bass line and chord punctuations in the keyboard gradually give way to a section of turbulence which serves as a transition to the relative calm of the following movement. The third movement, in 6/8 meter, has an easy flowing vitality. There is a silvery brilliance to the music with a hint of nostalgia. The interweaving melodic strands grow increasingly romantic in quality and then, quite suddenly, give way to a developmental passage which builds in intensity and expectation. The finale is spirited and jubilant in character. The atmosphere generated is one of a triumphant proclamation which grows increasingly exultant as the work culminates in a rousing coda. Escapade
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Alto Sax, Percussion
Genre: ContemporaryThis colorful and inventive composition explores a sequence of emotional states which develop over a talea, a fixed pattern of time values. Except during the extended saxophone cadenza, this repeating rhythmic pattern can be heard throughout the work in varying degrees of intensity. At times it is forcibly presented by the musicians moving in rhythmic unison. On other occasions the talea is fragmented and distributed among the players. Frequently this rhythmic pattern is embedded in the presentation of melodic material similar to the technique of isorhythm as it was employed by 14th-century masters such as Machaut and de Vitry. The continuous variation of the unifying talea coupled with the work’s intriguing melodies and exotic timbral contrasts, make this an accessible and enjoyable concert work. Percussion distribution: Percussion 1: Timpani (4), temple blocks, snare drum, and 2 suspended cymbals; Percussion 2: Orchestra bells, xylophone, maracas, triangle, 2 cow bells, suspended cymbal, and chime tree; Percussion 3: Vibraphone, tam-tam, roto toms, and claves; Percussion 4: Marimba, guiro, and 2 suspended cymbals. “By far the night’s most memorable piece.” - The Los Angeles Times. Divergences
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Clarinet, Viola
Genre: Contemporary"Divergences" for clarinet and viola by Howard J. Buss was written for clarinetist Allison Storochuk and violist Kirsten Weingartner Weiss. The 3 movements explore a wide array of moods and sonic atmospheres ranging from the mystical, to the contemplative, to soaring, vibrant passages: Recollections of Shared Times, Disparate Views, and Celebrations. The composer states, “The titles relate to a phenomenon that has long fascinated me: How is it that people such as siblings, who grow up in the same environment (home, family, teachers, and shared experiences), can turn out in later years to be very different from one another with their religious and political beliefs, preferences for food, travel, music, etc. This is addressed generally in the duo, which is designed to be musically solid without any extra-musical, programmatic connotations. However, I think the titles and general character of the music will connect with many listeners and may make them think about the evolution of their own personal relationships.” Score and parts are included. Seeking Ithaca
Composer: Guzzo, Anne Marie
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Alto Sax, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: An exciting work inspired by the adventures of Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey. It is cast in 2 programmatic movements, Calypso's Gift and Adventure. In the first movement Odysseus is stranded on the Calypso's island, where he becomes enchanted by the beautiful goddess. Calypso is in love with Odysseus, but she makes the decision to let him continue his adventures and find his family again. Musically, the mournful yet proud opening saxophone melody employs both traditional sounds and extended techniques such as key pops and air-tones. This melody, in one form or another, becomes the basis for most of the composition, which is harmonically fleshed out by extended chords in the piano part. A slower second half, marked "Distantly, sadly," recalls motives from the opening section, and creates a sense of loss, signified by the sax's pitchless air-tone at the conclusion. The exciting second movement, Adventures, is inspired by Odysseus' encounter with the Cyclops. This piece is a"must" for the advanced saxophonist! Triptych for Violin and Piano
Composer: Sterrett, David
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Violin
Genre: Contemporary"Triptych for Violin and Piano" by David M. Sterrett. A “triptych” is a musical collage of three contrasting movements unified by a common musical element – in the case of this piece, each movement is in A-B-C-B-A form. While the movements are unified in matching formal scheme, each exudes a different style and character. The first, Scherzo, jokes and jabs with jagged lines and snapping gestures that are sometimes humorous and sometimes aggressive. The second movement, Rhapsody, is the emotional centerpiece of the work and contrasts the snarky character of the Scherzo with gentle, lush, lyrical lines which convey a sense of loss and longing, and ultimately the restorative power of hope. The final movement, Tarantella, follows with its own unique style, a flashy, quick and energetic dance, slightly dark and grim in character, though at times also joyous and playful. Piano score and solo part is included. (11’40”) Grade V.
