Atmospheres
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryA colorful, captivating duo in 3 movements: The Wakening; One Sunday, Long Ago; and On-the-Edge. It was commissioned by the Double Take Duo. The first movement begins with a mysterious and turbulent section featuring dramatic contrasts of dynamics and mood. Eventually this gives way to passages with a hint of playfulness. It culminates in an intriguing dance-like section with a distinctively Latin flare. One Sunday, Long Ago is divided into 2 main parts: the first uses lyrical, soaring melodies played on the Flügelhorn over a delicate ostinato on the maracas. Notable about the percussion part in this section is that the percussionist also plays the bongos and tambourine (setting on a table) with the bodies of the maracas, and the suspended cymbals with the butts of the maraca handles. It ends with an intriguing interplay between the marimba and the Flügelhorn, creating a beautiful, and almost meditative, atmosphere. The final movement is energetic, highly dramatic, and is obviously influenced by jazz. The percussion instruments used include marimba (to low A), two suspended cymbals, bongos, temple blocks, tambourine, maracas, wood block, tam-tam, cow bell, and triangle. The marimba part calls mostly for two-mallet technique. When 4 mallets are employed (in the third movement) sparingly, they are used in repeated chordal patterns. ATMOSPHERES is recorded on the Double Take Duo CD Atmospheres and on the CD Spanish Memoirs by Diego Arias and Yu-Jung Chung. It is a sophisticated work with audience appeal! In Memoriam
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Basset Horn, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryIn Memoriam for basset horn and piano by Howard J. Buss is a sonic tribute to the millions of soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in time of war. Originally for French horn and piano, this engaging work was written for hornist Pamela Titus during the fall of 2005 at a time when the United States marked the 2000th death of a US soldier in Iraq during the Second Gulf War. The music is loosely programmatic; the two movements reflect the sentiments of the poems In Flanders Fields by John McCrae and In Flanders Fields (An Answer) by C.B. Galbreath. Both of these poems were penned in response to “The War to End All Wars”, World War I, but their convictions are timeless, and certainly apply to the war in Iraq. In 2015 In Memoriam was adapted for basset horn by the composer in consultation with basset hornist Keith Koons Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $20.00

Tribute to Stephen Foster
Composer: Foster, Stephen Arranger: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: Folk musicStephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) is often referred to as “the father of American music.” Many of his numerous songs serve as a window into the spirit of America in his day. Others are exquisitely sentimental. Whether or not one approves of the lyrics of his minstrel songs, the enduring beauty and vitality of his melodies cannot be denied.
Like Foster, the arranger of this quintet, Howard J. Buss, was born in Pennsylvania. He now lives in Florida, where the official state song is Foster’s “Old Folks at Home,“ also widely known as “Swanee River.” Buss states, “The State of Florida revised the lyrics of this song in 2008 to take the edge off their minstrel origins, I also believe it was wise to update the words in order to preserve the music. In this instrumental arrangement, the original music is preserved while showcasing it in a more modern musical framework.“
In addition to the six Foster songs in this arrangement, Buss interjects two other well-known melodies. The “First Call” bugle call is woven into the tapestry of Camptown Races” and “The Girl I Left Behind Me” serves as a partner song to “Ring, Ring, the Banjo.”
- “Old Black Joe” (2’)
- “Camptown Races” (1’40”)
- “Beautiful Dreamer” (2’15”)
- “Old Folks at Home” also known as “Swanee River” (2’12”)
- “Ring, Ring the Banjo” – “Oh, Susannah!” (2’41”)
The movements may be played individually or in smaller groupings. The total duration is approximately 11’ without pauses between the movements.

Commemoration
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryA musical tribute to the countless musicians who have contributed to the art of trumpet playing over the centuries. The musical essence of this work is a synthesis of traditional and new trumpet performance techniques. This combination of the old and new is a musical representation of the debt contemporary trumpeters owe to their counterparts in past generations. In sections of Commemoration the trumpet is performed in the traditional manner, indeed, there are a number of quotes from famous trumpet masterpieces of the past. At one point the performer is asked to sing (using the syllable "ah") a portion of the well known Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke while simultaneously sustaining a note on the instrument and using a plunger mute. The effect is truly mystical and becomes a musical synthesis of the past and present. In other sections the trumpet is used as a synthesizer, capable of producing a wide array of timbres and effects. Short quotes from the literature are embedded in this intriguing work which also includes messages expressed by pitch serialism and Morse code. The score includes detailed performance directions as well as a helpful explanation of the coded (serial) sections. “A must for the advanced performer. “- ITG Journal Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $14.00

Turbulent Times
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Flute, Oboe
Genre: ContemporaryWas composed during 2009, a time when The Great Recession held its powerful grip much of the world, and uncertainty continued to build within American society. As the seemingly endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wore on, many did not expect peace to return in the foreseeable future. Yet, life went on. The music of Turbulent Times suggests the ebb and flow of the intense uncertainty felt by many with the more pleasant aspects of everyday life.
