The festive main body of the work is in an episodic ABA-Coda format and mixes Buss’ unique style of soaring lyricism with crisp, energetic rhythms and colorful harmonies. Energico! was originally written for flute ensemble during the summer of 2008: The Long Island Flute Club with support from The Brannen-Cooper Fund commissioned it in celebration of its 25th anniversary (1984-2009). It was premiered in 2009 by the Professional Flute Choir of the Long Island Flute Club at the National Flute Association Convention in New York City. Energico! for band intensifies the energy of the original version by utilizing the full resources of the concert band, including four percussion parts. The timbral palette is expanded accordingly and includes the use of mutes, stopped horn, and other colorful devices. Energico! for band is a sophisticated, yet audience-friendly work. Tribute to Stephen Foster
Composer: Foster, Stephen Arranger: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Eb Clarinet
Genre: Folk musicEb Clarinet, 2 Bb Clarinets, and 2 Bass Clarinets, opt. Bb Clarinet part for Bass Clarinet 1 included
Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) is often referred to as “the father of American music.” Many of his numerous songs serve as a window into the spirit of America in his day. Others are exquisitely sentimental. Whether or not one approves of the lyrics of his minstrel songs, the enduring beauty and vitality of his melodies cannot be denied.
Like Foster, the arranger of this quintet, Howard J. Buss, was born in Pennsylvania. He now lives in Florida, where the official state song is Foster’s “Old Folks at Home,“ also widely known as “Swanee River.” Buss states, “The State of Florida revised the lyrics of this song in 2008 to take the edge off their minstrel origins, I also believe it was wise to update the words in order to preserve the music. In this instrumental arrangement, the original music is preserved while showcasing it in a more modern musical framework.“
In addition to the six Foster songs in this arrangement, Buss interjects two other well-known melodies. The “First Call” bugle call is woven into the tapestry of Camptown Races” and “The Girl I Left Behind Me” serves as a partner song to “Ring, Ring, the Banjo.”
- “Old Black Joe” (2’)
- “Camptown Races” (1’40”)
- “Beautiful Dreamer” (2’15”)
- “Old Folks at Home” also known as “Swanee River” (2’12”)
- “Ring, Ring the Banjo” – “Oh, Susannah!” (2’41”)
The movements may be played individually or in smaller groupings. The total duration is approximately 11’ without pauses between the movements.

Skylines
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Clarinet, English Horn, Flute, Oboe
Genre: Contemporary"Skylines," version for woodwind sextet by Howard J. Buss, was originally composed for trumpet and piano during the Fall of 2002. This version for woodwind sextet was commissioned in 2019 by Victoria Ward Ltd. in memory of clarinetist David Marshall. It is scored for flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass clarinet and bassoon. An additional bassoon part is provided as a substitute for part 5, the bass clarinet. Cast in two movements, it is a picturesque musical urban portrait. Skylines is loosely programmatic in that no specific city is depicted; rather, the composer captures, in a broad manner, the essence of the big city spectacle. The lyrical and majestic first movement, Panorama, suggests the expansive grandeur of cityscape. The second, Amid the Spires, is hugely influenced by jazz and captures the dynamic energy of life on the busy streets. Turbulent Times
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Flute, Oboe
Genre: ContemporaryWas composed during 2009, a time when The Great Recession held its powerful grip much of the world, and uncertainty continued to build within American society. There was a general sense that the prosperity of the past may never return, and that the future may bring even more hardships. As the seemingly endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wore on, many did not expect peace to return in the foreseeable future. Yet, life went on. The music of Turbulent Times suggests the ebb and flow of the intense uncertainty felt by many with the more pleasant aspects of everyday life. Following the lyrical and plaintive introduction, stormy passages give way to sections of relative tranquility, only to reappear. In Memoriam
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Basset Horn, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryIn Memoriam for basset horn and piano by Howard J. Buss is a sonic tribute to the millions of soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in time of war. Originally for French horn and piano, this engaging work was written for hornist Pamela Titus during the fall of 2005 at a time when the United States marked the 2000th death of a US soldier in Iraq during the Second Gulf War. The music is loosely programmatic; the two movements reflect the sentiments of the poems In Flanders Fields by John McCrae and In Flanders Fields (An Answer) by C.B. Galbreath. Both of these poems were penned in response to “The War to End All Wars”, World War I, but their convictions are timeless, and certainly apply to the war in Iraq. In 2015 In Memoriam was adapted for basset horn by the composer in consultation with basset hornist Keith Koons Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $20.00
