Scherzi
Composer: Molineux, Allen
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Piano
Genre: Contemporary"Scherzi for Piano" by Allen Molineux - These miniatures are 6 different ways of looking at the scherzo genre. The first deals with allowing the performer to freely play the material. The second, at times, hints at a jazz-like swing style. The third is a special kind of quodlibet in that it uses snippets of well-known scherzi for piano and also for orchestra with numerous appearances of the Chopin “Scherzo No. 2” holding it all together, while some actually interact with each other. For example, Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann do get in a bit of a tangle and Bruckner seems to be at odds with the early Romantics of Beethoven and Schubert. The fourth is a conversational contrast between herky-jerky and groove motion. The fifth, which is the briefest, is a contest between a short staccato figure and an ever-expanding legato one. The final scherzo is a distorted ragtime piece where the left hand avoids the typical march-like accompaniment pattern. (9’50”) Grade V. World Within, The
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Cello, Clarinet
Genre: ContemporaryClarinet and Cello: The World Within is a musical metaphor reflecting an individual's yearning to be reconnected with his spiritual past while at the same time endeavoring to be effective in business and social interactions in the modern day world. While writing this work Buss was fascinated by how an acquaintance was resolving this dichotomy in his own life. Six days a week he works 10-hour days as a businessman, immersed in, and sometimes overwhelmed by, the fast-paced world of business. Yet without exception, he spends the entire day every Saturday at his Synagogue in worship, studying the Talmud, following ancient rituals, and reverently assisting the Rabbi in his sacred duties. In this work the 2 worlds, that of one's modern secular existence and that of one's spiritual heritage, are represented musically by two markedly different compositional procedures. The former is represented with a highly-structured, lyrical 12-tone style. The latter is more spontaneous and is influenced by Jewish musical idioms. In the slow, mysterious opening section these styles are juxtaposed; however, as the composition develops they become synthesized in a thoroughly integrated manner. This is an significant work that is meaningful to perform, and enjoyable (an thought-provoking) to listen to. The World Within was written for clarinetist Keith Koons, and cellist, Melissa Kraut. It was premiered by these artists on February 6, 2000 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Sonata della speranza
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bassoon, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano; Sonata della speranza “Sonata of Hope” for bassoon and piano by Howard J. Buss was written for Dr. Ann Shoemaker and is dedicated to the memory of bassoonist Dr. Eric Van der Veer Varner. When work on this sonata began in the autumn of 2019 it was being composed for Eric, a friend of the composer. After Eric’s sudden, tragic death shortly thereafter, the project was shelved. Work resumed in the spring during the global Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, Italy was the epicenter of the crisis and the composer, having friends living there, was deeply concerned with their welfare. As the composition developed, Italy overcame the worst of the ravages of the disease, and the pandemic took firm hold in the United States. The composer wrote much of Sonata della speranza while at home in Florida adhering to governmental shelter-in-place orders. The three movements address an array of emotions the composer experienced following the death of his friend and during the pandemic. The optimistic character of “Auspicious Sunrise” radiates the hope imbued in the morning glow of a new day. The musing nature of “Introspective” reflects the inner dialogue often experienced during the extended periods of social isolation. The buoyant, and at times whimsical third movement, “Serendipitous,” combines elements from the previous movements with new material: The music exudes an optimistic, forward thrust, while incorporating feelings from the daily experiences of living through the pandemic.
