EETTThe inspiration for the quartet began with a short work named “The Seventh Degree” which was inspired by my daughter, Cadence, and her ability to question everything to its fullest extent. After the work received its premiere, I decided to create two more works that revolved around the other members of my family to complete this quartet. Movement 1, To Be Mischievous, was written about my young son, Andrew, who describes the title perfectly in his actions. Movement 2, To Be Loved, is a song that was written to my wife, Stephanie, to thank her for everything that she has meant to our family. The Seventh Degree was adapted into Movement 3, To Be Questioned, and still describes my daughter and her desire to know more and be curious about everything. Learn More

with Piano; Commissioned by Brent Shires and Gail Robertson for the 2015 International Horn Symposium, Los Angeles. This piece is a commentary on the transient nature of all things. Youth, fame and fortune, success, passion, romance, all are fleeting and insubstantial - illusion in a sense. The memories rise and fall from the mists of consciousness, fragmentary, unfinished until nothing remains but a pulsating movement through light. I originally came across Frank Gulino’s music a few years ago at one of the International Trombone Festivals. I quickly fell in love with his musical voice and compositional style. After switching to bass trombone a few years ago, I realized quickly how small the bass trombone solo repertoire truly is. There are staples in the repertoire, but due to the nature of a small pool of repertoire choices, I wanted to take this opportunity to form a consortium and collaborate with Frank. My hope is this new piece will become a modern staple of the repertoire. - Austin Pancner

TOCCATA AND RETRO-INVENTION for solo piano by Howard J. Buss is dedicated to University of Arizona piano professor, Dr. Rex Woods. The titles of the two movements of this composition form a kinship with the toccatas and inventions of the Baroque era, but with a modern twist. They capture the spirit of the earlier forms, rather than the actual compositional procedures. Learn More - La Sonata modello "The Template Sonata"

La Sonata modello “The Template Sonata” for solo piano by Howard J. Buss is dedicated to pianist James Helton. The music traverses a wide rage of moods and sonic atmospheres. The composer designed a template of meter changes derived from the numerical series in mathematics codified by the medieval Italian mathematician, Leonardo Fibonacci. In this adaptation of the Fibonacci sequence each number represents a quarter note and is expressed in the succession of meters 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 4/4, 4/4, 5/4, 3/4, 5/4, 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, and 5/4. This series of measures is repeated throughout the work. While each 13-bar segment implies that the music fits into a particular metrical scheme, the composer exerts independence in a variety of ways, such as with phrasing that sometimes ignores the underlying structure. Buss states: “This metrical template was at times useful, but often seemed arbitrary and counter to the thrust and development of the musical material. My challenge was to find a way to work with the template while using its rigidity to spark creative solutions. Although the music evolves within the template, my ultimate goal was that the listener be unaware of the structural underpinnings and simply enjoy the beauty of the music.” Learn More - Oracle

Pathways (2015) for horn quartet by Howard J. Buss. Without using extended techniques and difficult technical displays, this colorful work is designed as a showcase for the horn quartet. Written in 4 continuous movements, the music has a strong narrative quality. The general characteristics of the movements are: energetic, playful and marching, plaintive, and buoyantly joyous. Although the musical language is sophisticated, because of the work’s moderate tessitura and modest technical requirements, Pathways is accessible to horn quartets comprised of moderately advanced students and amateurs, yet, professional-level hornists will enjoy its energy, vitality and colorful scoring. LUMINOUS HORIZONS for bassoon and harp by Howard J. Buss was inspired by the spectacular photos of Pluto taken by the New Horizons probe. The title refers to one image in particular, the stunning backlit photo showing the illuminated blue sky of Pluto. The austere, yet beautiful surface of the planet reveals rugged mountains, craters, and ice plains. All of these observations are incorporated into the musical fabric of this work one way or another. Written for Richard Meek and the 2016 IDRS Conference. Learn More
