The inspiration for the quartet began with a short work named “The Seventh Degree” which was inspired by my daughter, Cadence, and her ability to question everything to its fullest extent. After the work received its premiere, I decided to create two more works that revolved around the other members of my family to complete this quartet. Movement 1, To Be Mischievous, was written about my young son, Andrew, who describes the title perfectly in his actions. Movement 2, To Be Loved, is a song that was written to my wife, Stephanie, to thank her for everything that she has meant to our family. The Seventh Degree was adapted into Movement 3, To Be Questioned, and still describes my daughter and her desire to know more and be curious about everything. Learn More

Program notes:

“Once in a Blue Moon” is a concerto for euphonium and wind ensemble written by a young Taiwanese composer, Wan-Yun Liang. According to the composer, this romantic piece is telling a story about “two lovers who coincidentally met, fell in love and watched the moon under the moonlight.” This piece consists of four sections without break. The music begins with a lovely main theme played by the soloist. This first section, marked Adagio, is in the style of the blues. It is followed by a fast section and a tango style third section. After a brief cadenza, the main theme comes back in a dance tempo. In this final section, the clarinet section will play the counter melody when the soloist presents the main melody. After that, trumpets and saxophones players will play the main tune while the counter melody will be played by the soloist. This represents the two lovers dancing happily under the moon.

This piece was premiered by the Euphonium player, Tzu-Hsiang Lin, and Taipei Symphonic Band in January 14th 2018, under the direction of  Dr. Po-Yuan Ku. 

This music has been selected as 2018 Taiwan Tuba Euphonium Competition Set Piece.

I originally came across Frank Gulino’s music a few years ago at one of the International Trombone Festivals. I quickly fell in love with his musical voice and compositional style. After switching to bass trombone a few years ago, I realized quickly how small the bass trombone solo repertoire truly is. There are staples in the repertoire, but due to the nature of a small pool of repertoire choices, I wanted to take this opportunity to form a consortium and collaborate with Frank. My hope is this new piece will become a modern staple of the repertoire. - Austin Pancner

Pathways (2015) for horn quartet by Howard J. Buss. Without using extended techniques and difficult technical displays, this colorful work is designed as a showcase for the horn quartet. Written in 4 continuous movements, the music has a strong narrative quality. The general characteristics of the movements are: energetic, playful and marching, plaintive, and buoyantly joyous. Although the musical language is sophisticated, because of the work’s moderate tessitura and modest technical requirements, Pathways is accessible to horn quartets comprised of moderately advanced students and amateurs, yet, professional-level hornists will enjoy its energy, vitality and colorful scoring. Portraits for horn quartet by Lee Heritage is in four movements, "This and That," "Waltz," "Hymn," and "Rip Romp." The first pulses with rhythmic energy and dramatic fanfares. The playful syncopations and percussive character of the opening serve as a cheerful prelude to a nostalgic slow waltz in the second movement. The rich harmonies of the waltz are followed in the third movement by a stately hymn that explores the full expressive power of the horn choir. Exuberant horn rips open the final romp, announcing a return to the rhythmic energy of the first movement. A melodic optimism permeates the romp, which closes with a final triumphant fanfare.
