Cadenzas and Interludes #1
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Alto Sax, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryViolin and Alto Saxophone
Cadenzas and Interludes #1 "Memories from the Isle of Mull" was composed by Howard J. Buss and dedicated to Drs. Rachael and Stephen Fischer. It was inspired by the composer’s visit to the picturesque Isle of Mull in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. Particularly memorable was a Saturday night Cèilidh* in the island’s capital, Tobermory, which included traditional music from the area. The Scottish musical influences are not direct in Cadenzas and Interludes #1; rather, their spirit is blended with Buss’s style of soaring lyricism with a modern bent.
*Pronounced, Kay-lee. In Gaelic, a Cèilidh is a social gathering featuring music, storytelling, and dance.

Sirens
Composer: Vogel, Roger C.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Alto Flute, Flute
Genre: ContemporaryComposed for flutist Ronald Waln. The music is suggestive of the irresistible music produced the mythological Sirens, partly bird and partly human creatures. The flute is especially suited for this purpose since the Sirens were often depicted playing wind instruments as well as singing. The opening measures of the work feature in a prominent way the descending augmented second and semitones that were characteristic of the Ancient Greek chromatic scale. Koreana
Composer: Snyder, Randall
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Clarinet, Flute, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryKoreana (2015) for flute, clarinet and piano by Randall Snyder is a suite of traditional Korean folk songs harmonized in various Western styles. The gentle T’aryong was originally a movement from the monumental Yongsan Hoesang, an orchestral suite first notated in the 15th century. It was later adapted as the graceful Dance of the Crane. Han o baeng nyon is a folk song from the eastern province of Kangwondo (now divided between North and South Korea). Its existential lyrics speak of the transience of existence; even five hundred years is not enough time to fully experience life. The bluesy melody is harmonized in the style of Ravel. Arirang is the most well known of Korean melodies and exist in several distinct versions. This one, from Kyonggi Province around Seoul, features a pentatonic melody in a setting influenced by Aaron Copland. Sarag Ga is love song from a P’ansori, the uniquely Korean opera-like form performed by just a vocalist and single drummer. Its essentially monophonic texture is embellished with Neo-Classic dissonances and rhythms suggestive of Stravinsky. Trombone Graffiti
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary"Trombone Graffiti" for trombone quartet or ensemble by Howard J. Buss was composed in the fall of 2016. While writing this work the composer envisioned trombonists creating graffiti, not in the usual manner with paint and chalk, but with sonic gestures. The composition is musically sophisticated, yet is designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences. At times the music is characterized by bold, colorful swoops of sound, often with idiomatic glissandi. In other sections, staccato passages suggest a pointillist approach to creating the graffiti. Throughout, an undercurrent of edginess and electrifying tension permeates the music, as if to suggest the graffiti artists face the risk of getting caught in the act of producing their art.
