Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
Composer: Frank, Robert
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Trumpet
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: In 3 movements: Con Forza, Adagio, and Allegro Pesante. Inspired by the neo-classical “Gebrachmusik” of Hindemith, this early work by the composer builds upon the traditional sonata form. Contrasting themes in the the first movement are developed and combined in numerous manners within a modified sonata allegro form. The second movement uses a derivative of the Russian folk tune, “Bears Are Sleeping” for its second theme within a ternary form. The third movement contrapuntally combines and develops themes in a virtuosic, modified rondo. Sonata for Trumpet and Piano has been recorded by Grant Peters on the CD “From the Hills.” Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $20.00

Three Times Five
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: Contemporary“Three Times Five” is a brass quintet in three movements. The movement names: Procession, Tranquility and Excursion, describe the mood in each case, without providing an actual or implied story. Throughout the piece, each instrument is featured in melody and ensemble roles, and the performance level is medium difficult. The horn is, perhaps, featured more than in some similar compositions. The first movement begins with a fanfare section before settling into the “procession” tempo. The second movement is calm and peaceful, as the movement title suggests. The final movement is more up-tempo with more moving notes and several meter changes. Three Times Five will be fun and interesting for players and listeners alike. Learn MoreFrom $18.00

Crossroads
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Percussion, Trombone
Genre: Contemporary4 Trombones and 8 Percussion: The character of this music is strongly influenced by jazz and Latin music. The intriguing rhythms and soaring melodies combined with the implied theatre suggested by the staging, make this a sophisticated, yet accessible composition that is rewarding to perform and listen to. The 4 trombone parts may be performed with a quartet; however, it is desirable to have multiple players used on each part except in those areas where the score specifically specifies one player on a part for a particular passage. The unique instrumentation of this ensemble, combined with the prevalence of numerous colleges and universities that have trombone choirs and percussion ensembles, make this a concert work that is destined to become standard literature. "Somewhat contemporary sounding, with jazz and Latin influences, one's interest is held for the entirety. The two instrument families are well integrated throughout. Some sections are extremely lyrical in the percussion ensemble and rhythmic in the trombones, vice versa in others. This compositional technique allows for great clarity throughout the work. An enjoyable work for the performers and audience." -Susan Martin Tariq, Percussive Notes Magazine. Dedicated to Tom Brantley and Robert McCormick. The University of South Florida Trombone Choir and Percussion Ensemble premiered it in Tampa, Florida on January 21, 2012 under the direction of Robert McCormick. Scenes from the Holy Land
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Flute, Percussion
Genre: ContemporaryFlute and Percussion: "Commissioned for the McCormick Duo and the 30th Anniversary of the National Flute Association. Percussion instruments (one player) include: Marimba, suspended cymbal, tambourine, bongos, wood block, wind chimes, and agogo bells. “The opening section, ‘Masada’ presents angular solos against percussion accents, with ascending legato passages for the flute. The music turns more florid and Middle-Eastern in style before a peaceful coda. ‘Storm on Mount Sinai’ offers sharply rhythmic music accented with tambourine and a more febrile bazaar-like flute writing. ‘The Flock by the Sea of Galilee’ contains an oddly memorable five-note percussion motif under a lovely bucolic flute theme. ‘The Road to Jerusalem’ makes a haunting finale with elaborate passages against pulsating percussion. Scenes from the Holy Land is an effective and colorful work with deftly varied music and tackled by the musicians with skill and understated virtuosity Buss’ intimate style requires. It makes its effects with point and economy and would be a boon to flute and percussion duos searching for program material.” - The Gramophone, April 2005. Tomes of Redemption
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Electronics
The music of "Tomes of Redemption" uses themes and leitmotifs from the previous two installments in the “Tomes” saga to tell the story envisioned by the composer. The hero from "Tomes of Hardened Steel" became king. He has let his kingdom slowly go to ruin because of several misfortunes. The kingdom’s allies have not contacted them for a long period, so he decides to go on one last quest. After sailing to the island kingdom and finding it deserted, he has a spiritual encounter with ghosts to learn a fierce dragon, Tugarin, has wiped out the kingdom. The hero knows he must fight Tugarin to make it right, resulting in an epic battle to the death.
"Tomes of Redemption" was a a project that came about when James M. Green spoke with Ben McMillan about his previous tuba and electronic pieces. Ben asked James to commission the third installment of "Tomes". James jumped at the opportunity, became the lead commissioner, and put together a consortium that was made up of:
Bo Atlas, David Bisson, Douglas Black, Phillip Black, Josh Calkin, Wiatt Cariveau, Chris Combest, David Earll, Bryan Gozdowski, Preston Light, Tracy Luna, Kevin Madden, Winston Morris, Robert Munson, Jesse Orth, Allen Parrish, Richard Perry, Patrick Rettger, Gabriel Sears, Andy Smith, Adam Stevens, Matthew Tatz, Chris Vivio, Randy Westmoreland and Jarrod Williams

Whale Dive
Composer: Friedland, Zach
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryUnaccompanied
“Whale Dive” is a series of short musical postcards inspired by observations of whales and their unique movements and abilities. The three movements may be performed together attacca or separately if desired.
The first movement “Surface” follows the massive creatures up from the depths and slowly into view above the water with a long rising theme. As the mammals begin to move about towards the surface, the passages become more intricate but always stay legato displaying the whale’s massive appearance but peaceful nature.
The second movement “Breach” transforms the theme into a fun multi-meter dance as the whales begin to jump and play. This movement uses the entire range of the tuba as the whales jump up and down and should be played as lightly and joyously as possible to show the carefree nature of the animals splashing around.
The third movement “Deep Dive” captures the dramatic yet graceful nature as the whales head back to the depths. The movement builds to several climaxes just as the whales arch their backs, dive down, and flash their tails before disappearing beneath the water in one last “farewell”.
Performers should be encouraged to add “whale noises” to the beginning or end of the written music. I hope this piece works to capture the spirit of these majestic aquatic mammals and remind us of the importance of protecting their natural habitats so we can enjoy their beauty for years to come.

Ripples
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Percussion, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryTrumpet Duet with 8 Trumpets, Claves and Egg ShakerIt was my honor and my pleasure to write this piece in dedication to Vincent Di Martino (and his son Gabriel) upon Vince's 50th year in higher education. The image I had for this piece was of someone casting stones into a pool and the ripples going out, one by one, from each stone - in that sense as each of many ideas from teacher to son, to students, to the students of students, to colleagues in the US and eventually worldwide.
The piece also reflects Mr. Di Martino's legendary versatility by changing styles mid-way while still using the same thematic motive. There is even an opportunity for improvisation towards the end. May the ripples continue on and on for many years and many generations.

River of Stars
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Wind Band
Genre: ContemporaryWritten in 2019 for the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point bands, Michael S. Butler, director. Dedicated to Donald E. Greene and in celebration of the 125th anniversary of UWSP.This piece is not "sweet and twinkly" as one might expect from a piece about "stars". It is about vastness, movement through space, rotation, awe and even at times the calm in the middle of the storm. I used photos of the Milky Way and even Van Gogh's "Starry Night" as my inspiration for this piece. We are past thinking that space and the stars are sweet, twinkly, calm and always beneficent. This is a more contemporary view of our understanding of what we see when we look up at night. Barbara York
