Cosmic Portraits
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute, Oboe
Genre: ContemporaryFlute, Clarinet, Oboe and Bassoon: Consists of 3 movements inspired by views of objects in the Milky Way galaxy. The titles of the first 2 movements, The Backbone of Night and The Pale Blue Dot are taken from the writings of the renowned astrophysicist, Carl Sagan. In his book, Cosmos, he describes how the !Kung Bushman in Botswana refer to the Milky Way as “the backbone of night.” The spine of the Milky Way often appears directly over the Kalahari Desert. The !Kung believe it to be the structural foundation of the heavens and that one of its functions in relation to Earth, among many, is that it holds up the darkness. In his book, The Pale Blue Dot, Sagan poetically describes a haunting view of Earth from a distant point in our galaxy. He puts our worldly concerns into cosmic perspective when he refers to all that has ever happened to human beings as occurring “on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.” The final movement, Orbitals, suggests celestial bodies revolving around one another in a fascinating cosmic dance. Moons orbiting planets, planets around suns, suns around other suns culminate in the swirling wonder of our galaxy. Sci-Fi Percussives
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Percussion
Genre: Contemporary"SCI-FI PERCUSSIVES for 12 percussion is a riveting fantasy in 3 movements: ""Prelude to Contact"", ""Alien Probes"" & ""Aggressions"". The composer states, “I have always been fascinated by the human ability to disregard the tangible in order to embrace the intangible. Whether the intangibility involves the belief in a Deity, the enthusiastic acceptance of a conspiracy theory, or being engrossed in a movie about something as implausible as a Martian invasion, a leap of faith is required to enter the magical realm of the imagination.” - Howard J. Buss Percussion distribution: Perc. 1: Orchestra bells, conga drum & 2 suspended cymbals; Perc. 2: Xylophone & wood block; Perc. 3: Marimba; Perc. 4: bongos, 2 suspended cymbals, slapstick, air raid siren; Perc. 5: Vibraphone; Perc. 6: Marimba; Perc. 7: Timpani (4), cowbell & crotales (one octave); Perc. 8: Roto toms, tam-tam, lion roar, bass drum, maracas, 2 suspended cymbals, triangle, bell tree, snare drum & hi-hat; Perc. 9: Orchestra bells, tubular bells (chimes), sleigh bells, guiro, temple blocks & maracas, Perc. 10: xylophone & snare drum; Perc. 11: Marimba; Perc. 12: Bongos, 2 suspended cymbals & ratchet. On stage the percussionists are arranged into 3 quartets. Each group consists of a set of pitched and non-pitched instruments. For the most part, the positioning of the players is for the sake of balance; however, there are sections in the music where the parts are choreographed for special sonic and visual effects. This music appeals to all types of audiences: the music is sophisticated , yet because of its programmatic nature and the dazzling and powerful musical imagery, it will speak to anyone who still has a pulse! If you are looking for a large-scale ensemble work (comprised approximately of 75% keyboard percussion) with some parts which will challenge your best players, and other parts that will accommodate your Freshmen - this is it! Vibrant Horizons
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Flute
Genre: Contemporary"Vibrant Horizons" for flute and band by Howard J. Buss was composed for flutist Brian Luce. While not referring to any one individual in particular, this work is suggestive of a person’s journey from one reality to another. It is in 3 movements: New Beginnings (5’15”) has an optimistic character, and the spirited thrust of the music projects movement in a hopeful and positive direction. The contemplative second movement, Old Thoughts (5’45”), juxtaposes beautiful, atmospheric sections with brooding passages, as if to suggest a tension between desirable elements of the past with those that prompted the individual to seek new horizons. The final movement, Circles (6’30”), addresses the fact that once one is settled into a new situation, routines develop. When viewed over time these routines often resemble circular patterns.
