Running approximately six minutes, Prelude, Dance and Fanfare is a set of duets for euphonium and tuba or two tubas. This is a 1998 arrangement of Three Short Pieces for two horns which was composed in 1980 in New York City and slightly revised in 1996 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. In the Prelude, the melodic lines of the two instruments create a tapestry of lyrical counterpoint. Following this is a stately Dance which unfolds primarily as a canon between the two players. Tempus Fugit (“time flies”) is a brief piece for solo tuba that unfolds in a clear ternary form. The principal figure of the opening section is a rhythmic motive; this is later blended with suggestions of a more melodic nature. The middle section provides a contrast by introducing longer note values in a consistently lower tessitura, before the return of the opening material. Tempus Fugit was written for tubist Jeffrey Funderburk and premiered by him at the University of Northern Iowa, 6 October 1988. HoUsE miX was composed in September-October of 1995 at the request of tubist Jeffrey Funderburk. The recording of the electronics part provides the first three beats of measure one and then the tubist begins – in time – on the second eighth note of the fourth beat in measure one (marked * in the score). As to the title, it was my intention in writing this piece to emphasize the electronic nature of the accompaniment rather than to try and disguise it. In borrowing materials and gestures from the language of 1990s techno dance music, I also sought to borrow one of its structural conceits: the sharp juxtaposition of diverse materials (represented by the mash-up of upper- and lower-case letters in the title). The Quintet No. 1 for Brass (2004) was composed for the American Brass Quintet to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the New York Brass Quintet. The composition was premiered by the American Brass Quintet on October 23, 2004 during the Brass Chamber Music Forum at Appalachian State University. The work demands technical skill and expressive playing from each of the five players. Changing meters, multiple tonguing and harmonic mediant relationships are revealed in the opening Vivace passage. These techniques form the structural basis for the composition. A menacing theme is presented by the trombones and then stated in inversion by the trumpets followed by the horn and bass trombone. A return of the opening material leads to an abrupt halt of the quick tempo. A Larhetto passage follows, characterized by slowly evolving harmonies and long melodic lines. The principal melody, a lyrical version of the theme from the opening section, is first stated by the trumpet and then by the trombone, bass trombone and horn. A slightly faster imitative passage follows during which the opening motive of the theme is passed from player to player in canonic fashion. The slower tempo returns as the middle section fades to a quiet close. A development section marked by the return of the opening tempo, rhythmic intensity and melodic materials leads to a varied recapitulation of the initial section. The entire opening section is restated with significant variation in the assignment of the materials and key centers. The furious tempo is maintained beneath the rhythmically augmented restatement of the lyrical theme. A final return of the opening material leads to a brief but dramatic coda that concludes the composition.Learn More
