Modern Suite of Ancient Tunes
Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bassoon, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Modern Suite of Ancient Tunes employs early melodies from three sources. The first movement, Westron Wynde, is based on an early 16th century melody from the time of Henry VIII. It was used as the cantus firmus in masses by English composers during the Renaissance, the most famous of whom is John Taverner (c. 1490-1545). The bassoon plays a freely evolving and legato version of the tune, while the piano punctuates with staccato statements and chords.
The second movement, Machaut Variations, is based on the famous love song Quant je suis mis au retour by the mediaeval French composer Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377). A simple setting of the melody appears first and is followed by five variations, each with a different character. The final variation is the boldest, featuring fortissimo dynamics, tertian and added note chords, quartal harmonies, and syncopated rhythms.
The final movement, Chant Hildegard, quotes melodies from Hildegard of Bingen’s (1098-1179) Ordo Virtutum (The Play of Virtues). Hildegard was a German abbess, poet, scholar, and composer, and is the best-known female composer of the Medieval period. Chant Hildegard’s slow opening quotes the Chant of the Patriarchs and Prophets, while the fast middle and majestic ending sections weave the Chant of the Virtues into an athletic bassoon line. The piece ends with chantlike, organal harmonies in the bassoon and piano.

Three for Three
Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute
Genre: ContemporaryFor Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, "Three for Three" was named simply because it is three movements for three players. One features an opening motive of a major second, and it is this interval, with its associated rhythm, that is the driving force of the first and last portions of the movement. The middle section of One (the piece is ABA form) features the opening motive of the third movement’s theme. In Two, gently undulating rhythms provide a backdrop for the flute, which contains most of the melodic content. Three begins with all voices in unison on the main theme, which then breaks into a propulsive minimalist section. A fugato is heard with this theme as the subject prior to the movement’s end. States of Mind
Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
From the composer:
Each movement of States of Mind depicts a different psychological state of mind. The first movement, Sleepless Anxiety, represents the tension we often feel about unresolved issues in our lives. The repeated notes in the piano are like a ticking clock, and the repetitious and unresolved lines in the bass clarinet are the recurring thoughts that haunt sleepless nights. The second movement, Brooding and Acceptance, portrays a preoccupation with painful thoughts, followed by the acceptance of what has happened or what must be done. The third and final movement, Confidence, references the main motives from the previous movements and embodies the resolution of the problem while pointing confidently toward the future.

Five Places
Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryFor Clarinet and Piano, each movement of "Five Places" evokes a different place or atmosphere. On the Mountain depicts a hazardous mountain climb. Uncertain footing, cliffs, and other unknown hazards confront the climber, but he is rewarded with an awe inspiring vista upon reaching the top. In the Deep evokes the mystery of the deep ocean, where only faint glimmers of light penetrate. This movement utilizes the lowest register of the bass clarinet and piano to suggest the murky depths and a great sea beast. In the Cathedral uses as its main theme an ancient Aquitanian monophonic versus titled Novum festum celebremus. This melody, tossed back and forth between the bass clarinet and piano, is usually accompanied by a melismatic line that recalls the florid organum of a millennium ago. Under the Stars evokes a night spent under a blanket of twinkling stars. On the Edge of a Cloud is about a ride on the edge of a fast moving cloud, with its thrills and perils. The piece is based on a 12-tone row, but the row is used freely and is often combined with minimalistic patterns that help to rhythmically propel the piece. Learn MoreAs low as $20.00

Sonata for Flute and Piano
Composer: Emmons, Stephen
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Flute, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryFor Flute and Piano, the second movement of this "Sonata", Adagio, was written first and in large part contains the essential thematic material found in the other two movements. It is in ternary form and features beautiful, pastoral, innocent melodies in the flute. For the most part, the piano accompaniment consists of gently undulating major and minor chords that reinforce the modal and tonal centers of the movement. The first movement, Introduction, was composed last. It features melodic and rhythmic figures introduced in a fragmentary and sometimes dissonant way, inviting the listener into a somewhat stark musical landscape. The third movement, Rondo, is a brisk seven part rondo that recalls motives and themes from the first two movements. It features four statements of the rondo theme and three digressions interspersed between these statements. The highly rhythmic piano accompaniment creates a rhythmic bed over which athletic flute lines are woven. Learn MoreAs low as $20.00
