Composed for flutist Ronald Waln. The music is suggestive of the irresistible music produced the mythological Sirens, partly bird and partly human creatures. The flute is especially suited for this purpose since the Sirens were often depicted playing wind instruments as well as singing. The opening measures of the work feature in a prominent way the descending augmented second and semitones that were characteristic of the Ancient Greek chromatic scale. Learn More

Written for oboist Dwight Manning. It is a humorous setting of Laurence McKinney’s poem Oboe. The comical effect of the music and text is enhanced by theatrical gestures by the performers. These are suggested in the score at the appropriate time. For example, before the music commences, the performers are given the following direction: "Enter with great dignity. The oboist should try several reeds before choosing one while the singer becomes somewhat impatient." From that point on there is an amusing tension created between the performers with directions such as (to the singer), "glare at oboist." Or (to the oboist), "Lip down as much as possible, shrug shoulders and begin next phrase." This entertaining composition is a hit with all types of audiences. It is certainly a piece that should be in the repertoire of every oboist. The vocal range is from D below the treble staff, to Gb above the staff. (The Gb is used only one time.) Learn More

Violin, Alto Saxophone and Piano: On the Wing for violin, alto sax and piano by Roger C. Vogel was written in 2013 and revised in 2017 for Rachel and Stephen Fischer. It was inspired by the thrill of flight, as well as that of being in motion, traveling, and being active. The intense energy of taking off, soaring, gliding, and diving is depicted in its musical gestures. The opening begins with ascending motives and progresses through contrasting sections that represent different aspects and emotions that are experienced in flight. As the work progresses these motives recur in various ways, with some surprises, until the final exhilarating coda. Cast in one movement of about 15 minutes in length, the violin, alto saxophone, and piano compete, complement, intertwine, and reflect on the musical ideas equally. Learn More
