Allegro et Andantango
Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryWritten for Nathan Giroux and Ross Kerley Allegro et Andantango was composed in 2010 and dedicated to two outstanding University of Central Florida tuba students, Ross Kerley and Nathan Giroux. The work begins with a fugue-like confrontation between the two tubas and then suddenly pulls back into a comforting melody that leads into the Andantango, (a 3/4 tango with a medium Andante tempo). Each player gets his or her chance at the melody as the other player accompanies along with the tango groove. Suddenly the battle returns with more intensity and it is later followed by the tango. However, the tango is no longer in 3/4, it is now in 4/4 with a twist. Once again, the encounter returns for the finale with only one tuba playing the battle theme as the other player cluelessly remains playing the tango. The two tubas finally return to the calming melody that seems to come to and end, and then... Learn MoreFrom $12.00

Invictus
Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryInvictus was composed in February 2023 for Jessica Payne. The work begins with the sounds of marimba, conga drums, shakers, and windchimes to set the mood. There is a slight dissonance to create a gentle tension that serves as a symbol of pain and the strength needed to keep “going on.” The role of the second euphonium is to serve as a support to the other part (the role of a teacher). The trading passages that cross each other are a symbol of conversation and teaching (the second euphonium always goes first and “leads the way). The middle section has powerful independent melodic lines with musical advice such as “lead on” and “on a mission.” These melodies represent growth and power as the tension is in the past. The work ends with a tiny hint of tension to symbolize upcoming change and hopes that the tension will soon be forever gone. – Gail Robertson Invictus is a poem written by English author William Earnest Henley in 1875. This poem was authored while Henley was in the hospital after a radical surgery to save his leg following a diagnosis of tubercular arthritis. The poem has themes of strength and courage in the face of great adversity. Dr. Gail Robertson has been a force of good and encouragement in my life since I moved to Arkansas to study with her. When I approached Dr. Robertson about composing a duet for us to premiere at my graduate recital, this poem was one of the first themes that popped into my mind. I am proud to be where I am today and thankful for her guiding light – Jessica Payne

Passage
Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryPassage was composed in February 2023 for Robertson’s last Florida student Matthew Holbrook. When Matthew asked me to compose something lyrical for his Senior Recital, I didn’t hesitate a second since he had moved all the way from Florida to Arkansas to study with me! Passage is sort of a story of Matthew’s path since arriving in Arkansas. It begins with two slightly conflicting ideas followed by a unison melody that is symbolic of our lessons and friendship. New melodic lines speak to each other as if having a conversation and later intertwine and cross over each other. I somehow managed to overlap two wonderful hymns in this work. A slightly altered All Things Bright and Beautiful and Jean Sibelius’ theme from Finlandia also known as Catharina von Schlegel’s German hymn Be Still My Soul. Later the work presses on and is symbolic of someone on a mission to graduate and soon get married. There are hints of wedding bells, a marching band and a tiny hint of Barbara York’s A Caged Bird. – Gail Robertson Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $15.00

Funk Centric
Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryGail Robertson’s Funk Centric is a work for tuba and euphonium with fixed media. It is dedicated to the Robertson’s long-time friend and Disney’s Tubafours partner in crime, Willie Clark. Robertson and Clark worked together full-time from 1989-1999 at Walt Disney World… fresh out of college. The two have remained close friends over the years and this work will celebrate Willie’s upcoming retirement from the United States Air Force “Ceremonial Band” in Washington, D. C. after 20-years of service. Clark “also known as night-time Willie,” is a man full of style and groove. This funk centered work uses descriptive texts such as “strut along,” “dig in with style,” “make it happen,” “like a nighttime stroll,” and “sassy”…. all words that describe Willie Clark. The unison lines that occur in this work are a symbol of their close friendship and love of playing together. - Gail Robertson Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $15.00
