By the title, one might expect something unusual, and they would be correct. This three-movement suite begins with a slow tempo introduction, moving to a faster main part. However, soon some additional sounds emerge. In places, the player is asked to sing through the instrument, while playing other notes. To make this more manageable, the played notes are usually in a low range and do not move quickly. This allows the vocal sounds to be made more easily. The player may choose their most comfortable octave to sing the vocal notes. Most are written as “ah” sounds, with the exception of a few that are done while not playing a note, and are written as “la”, and still intended to be through the instrument. Other “extra” sounds are done with tapping and occasional stomping. Tapping can be done on any nearby surface. A plastic shoebox works well and could be placed on a close-by table or chair. Tapping could also be done on one’s instrument, but many might prefer another surface.

The three movements are in contrasting styles and tempos. There is enough “normal” material in this piece to make it more friendly to an audience than it could be, considering the extra sounds. Players may need to work on the singing while playing aspect in order to feel comfortable doing it. Also, players may want to try several tapping surfaces to see which they prefer. It is intended to bridge the gap between solid initial instruction and more advanced methods by providing sequenced material, including some instruction to help with understanding the introduced concepts. Additionally, it will help with becoming more familiar with a variety of key signatures and help develop a player’s range. The etudes are also intended to be interesting to the player and interesting for the listener.

Lake Forest Overture imagines a sight-seeing adventure through a natural area near a lake.  After a short majestic introduction, the first theme, measures 5 – 36, represents teeming wildlife in the forest.  The next part, mm. 37 – 58, describes a forest glade area, with sunlight streaming through tall trees.  The following section, mm. 59 – 75, serves to depict streams flowing from the hills, heading for the nearby lake.  Finally, the concluding segment is about sailing on the lake.

Lake Forest Overture is a medium difficulty composition, which employs several contrasting styles and affords interesting parts for all included instruments.

January Suite, for Brass Quintet, is a four movement composition displaying different moods of our coldest month.  If one lives in a warm location, this might help a person imagine January.  Although the movements all display a certain amount of minor tonality, January has many aspects to enjoy.  Usually, that enjoyment does not overshadow the hope that warmer weather will be arriving before too long. 

Musically, January Suite provides all players with interesting and integral parts, with lines being somewhat polyphonic.  The melody is distributed among the different players in each movement.  Elements of syncopation are found to some degree throughout, and the third movement has a significant use of chromaticism.  Enjoy January Suite at any time of the year!
