Fourth Watch
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Fourth Watch is a suite in three movements for Tuba and Piano. The name refers to usage of the use of the interval of the fourth and its accompanying quartal harmony. The first movement begins in the key of C, with standard tertian harmony and the fourths are brought in soon in a subtle manner. As the movement progresses, the fourths and quartal harmony become more of a force.
The second movement, a slower one compared with the first, starts with quartal harmony and is supplemented with tertian elements. The third movement is more of a combination of quartal and tertian segments. With regard to the piano part, as quartal chord intervals can be a challenge to pianists, care was taken to have the quartal sections accommodate the player by not changing overly fast.
By its nature of involving quartal and tertian harmonies, Fourth Watch is different than many compositions and, while having some of the inevitable dissonance of quartal harmony, it maintains a modicum of normalcy for the benefit of players and audiences. Fourth Watch will grab the listener’s attention, but the changes in the music and the relatively short length of the movements will keep those unfamiliar with these sounds from becoming lost or bored.

Capricious Suite
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith PianoBy the title, one might expect something unusual, and they would be correct. This three-movement suite begins with a slow tempo introduction, moving to a faster main part. However, soon some additional sounds emerge. In places, the player is asked to sing through the instrument, while playing other notes. To make this more manageable, the played notes are usually in a low range and do not move quickly. This allows the vocal sounds to be made more easily. The player may choose their most comfortable octave to sing the vocal notes. Most are written as “ah” sounds, with the exception of a few that are done while not playing a note, and are written as “la”, and still intended to be through the instrument. Other “extra” sounds are done with tapping and occasional stomping. Tapping can be done on any nearby surface. A plastic shoebox works well and could be placed on a close-by table or chair. Tapping could also be done on one’s instrument, but many might prefer another surface.
The three movements are in contrasting styles and tempos. There is enough “normal” material in this piece to make it more friendly to an audience than it could be, considering the extra sounds. Players may need to work on the singing while playing aspect in order to feel comfortable doing it. Also, players may want to try several tapping surfaces to see which they prefer. All in all, Capricious Suite for Tuba and Piano contains some unexpected sounds, but should be fun and interesting to play and hear. Learn More

Three Outdoor Events
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThis brass quintet musically describes three outdoor activities. The movements are entitled:
- Morning by Bicycle
- Afternoon by Kayak
- Evening Run
The intent of each is to convey the motion of those sports. These events could be parts of a triathlon, but they would then be happening all in the same part of a day and be more of a race. This setting is more relaxed, with less urgency. The bicycle movement is somewhat short, but rather active. The kayak movement is calm and intended to be flat water, instead of whitewater/ rapids. In the running movement, there is a repetitive section in the middle, which represents the endurance part of a run.
The difficulty level of performance is on the strong side of medium. There are several mixed meters employed, but the rhythms and ranges are moderate. Perhaps the concept of this piece will encourage people to go outside and be active.

15 Tuba Trios
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporary15 Tuba Trios is a collection of fifteen pieces for three tubas exploring a variety of styles and ranging in difficulty from medium easy to medium difficult. The first part ranges to slightly above the bass clef staff, while the other two voices range to the middle and below the staff. These trios are intended to give players a fulfilling experience with this type of ensemble, which, because of the problems low register harmony can present, require special listening and dynamic adjustment skills. The trios cover a diverse set of styles and are designed to give each of the three players a part that is important and integral to the piece. As tuba trios are more unusual and unfamiliar to many audiences, these pieces are also aimed at interesting and entertaining audiences with the capabilities of tubas. Learn MoreAs low as $20.00

Ruby, The
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary“The Ruby” is a medium easy quartet for two euphoniums and two tubas. It is based on a three-note motif, which I heard several times in a health facility with Ruby in its name. The three notes were sounded when and IV pump reached the end of a cycle and were the intervals of a major second followed by minor third. I could think of at least four tunes/ songs that began with these three notes and decided that they could be used to start other original melodies. In “The Ruby,” the three movement titles refer to shades of red, as red is perhaps the most quickly noticed property of a ruby. The music in the movements is not attempting to personify these shades, but is a fast (relatively), slow, fast arrangement utilizing different approaches to the starting motif. It is designed to help less experienced players have success with ensemble performance. Everyone has important parts, but the ranges, key signatures and rhythms are fairly tame. Enjoy performing and listening to “The Ruby”. Learn More

Botanical Suite, The
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
The Botanical Suite is an easy level composition for Tuba and Piano. It is meant to help less experienced players have success with performance. The rhythms and key signatures are easy and the range, while not extreme, may challenge a young player to stretch their upward limit. The title of “Botanical” is supported by the movement names, which highlight different kinds of plants. The characteristics of the plants are meant to be conveyed by the sounds of each movement. The four movements, along with tempo descriptions are:
- Sunflowers – Con Moto
- Weeping Willow – Larghetto
- Oak Tree – Andante
- Wheat Field – Moderato
The hope is for the player to learn from the music and to step into the world of an accompanied solo. The second hope is for the player and the audience to enjoy and have fun.

4th Avenue Suite
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT4th Avenue Suite is a composition set for three euphoniums and three tubas. Its inspiration comes from a vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when we were staying in a rental house on 4th Avenue. The tunes are derived from a sequence of numbers used to open the digital door lock of the house for that week. The numbers, 3 6 8 2 4 3, are employed by their numerical placement in a musical scale. I thought: “What if; these numbers could be made into a tune (or several)?” The entire suite is not confined to these notes, but the tunes in the movements have grown out of this sequence. To construct several generations from a set of notes seemed enough, so no attempt has been made to relate the movements to events or situations. The movements are subtitled as follows: I. Intrada; II. Intermezzo; III. Minuet; and IV. Finale. The challenge level is Medium to Medium Difficult. All players are utilized in important roles and the composition offers various combinations of featured players, sections with just euphoniums or just tubas, and total ensemble. Learn More
