Feierlicher Einzug
Composer: Strauss, Richard Arranger: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Brass Band (British style) Instruments: Bass Trombone, Cornet, Euphonium, Flugelhorn, French Horn, Timpani, Trombone, Tuba
Genre: ClassicalFanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of St. JohnI am pleased to dedicate this arrangement to the Fox Valley Brass Band. Thanks to a generous donor, this project was completed during the Christmas season of 2019. Thanks also to Jonathan Hauser who suggested this wonderful piece of music as a performance opportunity for our band. Most of all, thanks to the talented and hard-working members of the Fox Valley Brass Band who allow me to conduct this wonderful ensemble. We look forward to performing this work for the very first time in March 22, 2020 at a joint concert with the Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band, Dr. Allen Legutki, conductor.
The full name of the composition is “Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Orderns”, which the Wind Repertory Project web site translates as “Fanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of St. John.” Program notes from the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble point out that Strauss was already a well-known conductor and composer when he wrote this composition in 1909. One of only a handful of his works written exclusively for winds, Strauss’s powerful, majestic composition is scored for 15 trumpets, 4 horns, 4 trombones, 2 tubas and timpani. It was composed for the investiture ceremonies of the Order of St. John, a Western Christian military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 1023 to care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land. Kupala Night
Composer: Raum, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Trumpet in C
Genre: ContemporaryC Trumpet with Piano
Kupala Night is an ancient pagan fertility festival that takes place once a year on June 21. The music is meant to conjure the feeling of a the forest at night with young couples carrying out the ancient customs meant to induce fertility and love. Michael Fedyshyn, for whom the concerto was written, has Ukrainian background which inspired the subject of this concerto.
The first movement is the Dance of the Young Men, full of vigor, trying to attract the young women.
The second movement, Floating Wreaths, depicts the girls floating wreaths of candle-lit flowers on the river in hopes that the direction the wreaths take will foretell their future loves. The music opens with three currents from the river, each carrying a group of wreaths. The men try to capture the wreaths to impress the girls. The movement starts with three themes flowing into each other joined by the trumpet representing the young men. The triplet motif of the first movement is repeated in the second. The calm of the initial floating of the wreaths is interrupted by a group of young men showing off to the girls with their dancing.
The third movement is Searching for the Flowering Fern, which flowers only on Kupala Night has the young couples going through the forest seeking the elusive Flowering Fern, which, if they can find it, will bring them good fortune. The movement is mainly written in Lydian mode, with the raised fourth. Many ancient cultures felt the modes had an influence on the mood of the listener with the Lydian mode evoking youth and mystery. Close to the end, when the mist is again rising, themes from previous movements are heard in the muted trumpet, like spirits.

Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
Composer: Frank, Robert
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Trumpet
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano: In 3 movements: Con Forza, Adagio, and Allegro Pesante. Inspired by the neo-classical “Gebrachmusik” of Hindemith, this early work by the composer builds upon the traditional sonata form. Contrasting themes in the the first movement are developed and combined in numerous manners within a modified sonata allegro form. The second movement uses a derivative of the Russian folk tune, “Bears Are Sleeping” for its second theme within a ternary form. The third movement contrapuntally combines and develops themes in a virtuosic, modified rondo. Sonata for Trumpet and Piano has been recorded by Grant Peters on the CD “From the Hills.” Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $20.00

Heavens Awaken, The
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and String quartet Instruments: Bassoon, Cello, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryDedicated to bassoonist Arnold Irchai. The structure of this exciting work is highly symbolic in that it was inspired by the details of the visions of the priest Ezekiel while living with the Jewish exiles in Babylon. Ezekiel saw a powerful, glowing, and complex entity appear in the sky out of a “great cloud.” He believed it to be an appearance of God: “Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.” (Ezekiel 1:5 KJV) The formal scheme of The Heavens Awaken is programmatic in the sense that the sequence of events described in the vision is musically represented in a general way. The serene opening gradually becomes mysterious and gives way to a series of passages that serve as an ominous portent to the arrival of the airborne object. The 4 string instruments, each with 4 strings, 4 tuning pegs, and human-like body shape symbolize the 4 “creatures” of the vision. The bassoon represents the “voice” of what Ezekiel believes is God. It should be noted that many people also have interpreted his vision as a sighting of a UFO, described with the insights and vocabulary of the day. “This significant new addition to the bassoon and string quartet literature is a “must for the advanced bassoonist!” Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $30.00

Millennium Visions
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and String quartet Instruments: Cello, Clarinet, Viola, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryIn 3 captivating movements: First Dawn, Meditation, and Quest, this composition was composed in the latter months of 1999 when most of the world was looking forward with eager anticipation to the turn of the Century, and in many minds, the Millennium. The conflict between man’s desire to “progress” in our technological age and his desire to connect to his spiritual past is symbolically represented by an array of musical styles and compositional procedures. The modern world is suggested by passages influenced by popular music styles and 12-tone technique. The longing for spirituality is manifested in the poignant lyricism of the work and its reliance on classical formal structures. Commissioned by ClarinetFest 2000, premiered by Tom Martin (Boston Symphony). Big Bang, The
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryThis significant work in 2 movements is a musical representation of the “Big Bang” theory of the creation of the universe which contends that our ever-expanding universe began as a colossal explosion at a single point in space. During the first movement, The Creation, all musical development grows out of an initial blast of sound. Waves of sound mass gradually crystallize into definite pitches leading to the formation of the natural harmonic series. 12-tone fragments intertwine and gradually coalesce into perceptible melodies. This musical development is analogous to the formation of compounds, amino acids, etc. Midway through The Creation the “spark of life" is introduced in an abrupt shift of musical activity which undergoes continuous development to the end of the movement. The animated second movement, Dance of Life, is a joyous celebration of life. Percussion distribution: Perc. 1: 2 suspended cymbals, 3 brake drums, 2 cowbells, temple blocks, tam-tam & sand blocks; Perc. 2: Orchestra bells, 5 roto toms & triangle; Perc.3: Flexitone, timpani (4), wind chimes, bongos & a thunder sheet (or a large tam-tam); Perc. 4: Xylophone, suspended cymbal, bass drum & chimes (tubular bells); Perc. 5: Marimba, 2 anvils metal pipes may be substituted), tambourine, finger cymbals & triangle; Perc. 6: Vibraphone, chimes (tubular bells) which are shared with player 4, snare drum, 2 suspended cymbals & tam-tam.The piano is treated as an integral part of the percussion battery. This engaging work is appropriate for a college-level percussion ensemble. Brom Bones
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary"This riveting “tour de force” musically depicts the character and exploits of Washington Irving’s dashing prankster, Brom Bones, in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The musical ensemble consists of 2 trombone quartets, each comprised of three tenors and one bass. The work is cast in 5 movements, the first two are interconnected: I. Overture (2:00) II. The Smoke Out (2.40) III. The Schoolhouse Caper (2:00) IV. Ichabod’s Romance (3:40) V. Night Encounter (3:10) Following the energetic and heroic Overture, in The Smoke Out tone clusters represent the buildup of smoke in Ichabod’s singing school. Chorale-like passages suggest the music of the singers in training. The movement ends in transition, as Brom Bones and his small band of pranksters gallop off to their next adventure. The third movement, The Schoolhouse Caper, combines very aggressive and topsy-turvy passages with humorous, plodding interjections. Ichabod’s Romance begins as a beautiful unaccompanied ballad which is abruptly disturbed by a cacophony of brassy muted trombones, suggesting the whining of Brom’s mocking dog. Beautiful hymn-like sections serve as the backdrop to heartfelt solo passages, which are again disturbed by Brom’s annoying dog. The movement ends as it began, with the beautiful trombone solo. The intense final movement, Night Encounter, depicts Ichabod’s frightening and fateful run-in with the Headless Horseman, suspected by some to be Brom Bones in disguise. This is a “must” for the advanced college ensemble. Score & parts included."
