The title refers to intellectual enlightment as well as to physical brightening. The brilliant and energetic opening fast section eventually gives way to a more subdued and reflective slower section before the opening mood returns and builds in ever-increasing intensity to the rousing conclusion. The trumpet ensemble is scored for Bb piccolo trumpet, 2 Bb trumpets, 2 Bb Flügelhorns, and Bb bass trumpet (with an optional trombone part included as a substitute for part 6. Learn More - Downloadable - 3 Episodes for Tuba and Piano$19.95Out of stockwith Piano; This is Andrew Berry’s first completed composition for the two instruments. Though it primarily features the tubist as the solo voice, the pianist plays an important role both melodically and harmonically, truly making the composition a piece of chamber music. Each of the three episodes are entirely “absolute” music. While there is no programmatic inspiration behind the piece, there is melodic and harmonic continuity among the three episodes that allow the performers to tell their own story in the larger context of the piece. Episode I is primarily composed of a-symmetric meters (5/4 and 7/8) with subdivision groupings that are often changing. Along with the jazz-inspired rhythms, this effect creates an imbalance of time that is truly never resolved in the entirety of the movement. Episode II is much like a fantasy, with melodic ideas flowing naturally between the two performers without focusing too heavily on the previous material. The episode is divided into three main sections, each with its own individual mood and pacing. Episode III is the final movement of the piece and acts as a realization of the material from the previous movements. The changing subdivisions in the asymmetric meters are still present, however the melodic material is much more tonal and conclusive in its cadences. Energy and drama build up to the final minute of the piece, where a calm reminiscence of the piece’s opening material transitions into a beautiful final melody from the tubist and conclusion of epic proportions from both performers. 3 Episodes for Tuba and Piano was premiered by Nick Collins (tuba) and Dr. Eric Jenkins (piano) on April 25th, 2021 during Nick’s senior tuba recital at Kennesaw State University. When I first heard the piece I immediately fell in love with the melody and wanted to see how it fit the tuba. Whither Must I Wander ultimately fit the tuba perfectly and truly allows the performer to soar through their range on true cantabile lines. Learn More
- Downloadable - Doubles$14.95Out of stockwith Piano; Doubles was composed in 2018 and is intended to be performable on either Contra-bass or Bass tuba. The piece contrasts a slightly sad, sweet melody in the 3/4 sections with the jovial, bouncing lines of the 3/8 sections. The piano part in Doubles is also extremely important and frequently engages in a call and response with the melody in the tuba. Doubles is dedicated to the memory of Barbara York as a thank you for the assistance she joyfully gave me in while I was working on the piece. Learn More

Fanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of St. JohnI am pleased to dedicate this arrangement to the Fox Valley Brass Band. Thanks to a generous donor, this project was completed during the Christmas season of 2019. Thanks also to Jonathan Hauser who suggested this wonderful piece of music as a performance opportunity for our band. Most of all, thanks to the talented and hard-working members of the Fox Valley Brass Band who allow me to conduct this wonderful ensemble. We look forward to performing this work for the very first time in March 22, 2020 at a joint concert with the Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band, Dr. Allen Legutki, conductor.
The full name of the composition is “Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Orderns”, which the Wind Repertory Project web site translates as “Fanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of St. John.” Program notes from the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble point out that Strauss was already a well-known conductor and composer when he wrote this composition in 1909. One of only a handful of his works written exclusively for winds, Strauss’s powerful, majestic composition is scored for 15 trumpets, 4 horns, 4 trombones, 2 tubas and timpani. It was composed for the investiture ceremonies of the Order of St. John, a Western Christian military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 1023 to care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land. This riveting and energetic piece is characterized by lyrical passages juxtaposed with aggressive, angular sections. All three players are given substantial solo lines in this exciting tour de force. Learn More - World Within, The$16.00Clarinet and Cello: The World Within is a musical metaphor reflecting an individual's yearning to be reconnected with his spiritual past while at the same time endeavoring to be effective in business and social interactions in the modern day world. While writing this work Buss was fascinated by how an acquaintance was resolving this dichotomy in his own life. Six days a week he works 10-hour days as a businessman, immersed in, and sometimes overwhelmed by, the fast-paced world of business. Yet without exception, he spends the entire day every Saturday at his Synagogue in worship, studying the Talmud, following ancient rituals, and reverently assisting the Rabbi in his sacred duties. In this work the 2 worlds, that of one's modern secular existence and that of one's spiritual heritage, are represented musically by two markedly different compositional procedures. The former is represented with a highly-structured, lyrical 12-tone style. The latter is more spontaneous and is influenced by Jewish musical idioms. In the slow, mysterious opening section these styles are juxtaposed; however, as the composition develops they become synthesized in a thoroughly integrated manner. This is an significant work that is meaningful to perform, and enjoyable (an thought-provoking) to listen to. The World Within was written for clarinetist Keith Koons, and cellist, Melissa Kraut. It was premiered by these artists on February 6, 2000 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Learn More
- Sonata della speranza
From $22.00

with Piano; Sonata della speranza “Sonata of Hope” for bassoon and piano by Howard J. Buss was written for Dr. Ann Shoemaker and is dedicated to the memory of bassoonist Dr. Eric Van der Veer Varner. When work on this sonata began in the autumn of 2019 it was being composed for Eric, a friend of the composer. After Eric’s sudden, tragic death shortly thereafter, the project was shelved. Work resumed in the spring during the global Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, Italy was the epicenter of the crisis and the composer, having friends living there, was deeply concerned with their welfare. As the composition developed, Italy overcame the worst of the ravages of the disease, and the pandemic took firm hold in the United States. The composer wrote much of Sonata della speranza while at home in Florida adhering to governmental shelter-in-place orders. The three movements address an array of emotions the composer experienced following the death of his friend and during the pandemic. The optimistic character of “Auspicious Sunrise” radiates the hope imbued in the morning glow of a new day. The musing nature of “Introspective” reflects the inner dialogue often experienced during the extended periods of social isolation. The buoyant, and at times whimsical third movement, “Serendipitous,” combines elements from the previous movements with new material: The music exudes an optimistic, forward thrust, while incorporating feelings from the daily experiences of living through the pandemic.
