There is a Season
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Clarinet, Percussion
Genre: ContemporaryThe titles of the 2 movements, A Time of War, and A Time of Peace, as well as that of the larger work are derived from Ecclesiastes 3 in the Old Testament of the Bible. This striking work was written during the Second Iraq War is loosely programmatic. The 1st movement is tense and has militaristic character with dramatic proclamations culminating in an exciting solo passage for the percussion. The second movement begins with an atmosphere of apprehension that gives way to a spirited dance-like section. Eventually the sonic disposition becomes reflective, but during the clarinet cadenza the mood brightens and returns to the animated and joyous mood exhibited earlier in the movement. He writes for the percussion ensemble with mastery and features a wide range of instruments. The sound landscape is rich with many moods and timbres. American Phoenix is an attractive addition to a solo program or as a feature piece for a percussion recital. It is rewarding for both performer and audience.” - The ITA Journal, January 2005 Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $50.00

Mysterious Exit
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Flute, Percussion
Genre: Contemporarywith 4 Percussion: The title refers to the inexplicable disappearance of the 14th Century Sinagua Indians who inhabited an area in what is now the State of Arizona. This work was inspired by the composer’s visit to the Sinagua pueblo ruins and is a musical representation of how the Sinaguan culture graced the austere and forbidding landscape of the region. The central section of the piece exhibits some of the intriguing rhythmic asymmetry found in Hopi dance songs. Recorded on the CD “Premiers Vol. I”. (C. Azucar!
Composer: Gomez, Alice
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryAzucar! is scored for bass tuba and timbales, and is in three brief movements. The composition pays tribute to the late Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. Once the music really started grooving hard and those Latin rhythms would intoxicate the dancers and listeners, Ms. Cruz would shout out, “Azucar!” The literal translation of “azucar” is “sugar” or “sweet.” This composition features a combination of Latin-tinged melodic lines and traditional Salsa bass patterns performed by the tuba soloist. The timbale player compliments the tuba part using a variety of Latin rhythms in the accompaniment.

Atmospheres
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryA colorful, captivating duo in 3 movements: The Wakening; One Sunday, Long Ago; and On-the-Edge. It was commissioned by the Double Take Duo. The first movement begins with a mysterious and turbulent section featuring dramatic contrasts of dynamics and mood. Eventually this gives way to passages with a hint of playfulness. It culminates in an intriguing dance-like section with a distinctively Latin flare. One Sunday, Long Ago is divided into 2 main parts: the first uses lyrical, soaring melodies played on the Flügelhorn over a delicate ostinato on the maracas. Notable about the percussion part in this section is that the percussionist also plays the bongos and tambourine (setting on a table) with the bodies of the maracas, and the suspended cymbals with the butts of the maraca handles. It ends with an intriguing interplay between the marimba and the Flügelhorn, creating a beautiful, and almost meditative, atmosphere. The final movement is energetic, highly dramatic, and is obviously influenced by jazz. The percussion instruments used include marimba (to low A), two suspended cymbals, bongos, temple blocks, tambourine, maracas, wood block, tam-tam, cow bell, and triangle. The marimba part calls mostly for two-mallet technique. When 4 mallets are employed (in the third movement) sparingly, they are used in repeated chordal patterns. ATMOSPHERES is recorded on the Double Take Duo CD Atmospheres and on the CD Spanish Memoirs by Diego Arias and Yu-Jung Chung. It is a sophisticated work with audience appeal! Big Bang, The
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Piano
Genre: ContemporaryThis significant work in 2 movements is a musical representation of the “Big Bang” theory of the creation of the universe which contends that our ever-expanding universe began as a colossal explosion at a single point in space. During the first movement, The Creation, all musical development grows out of an initial blast of sound. Waves of sound mass gradually crystallize into definite pitches leading to the formation of the natural harmonic series. 12-tone fragments intertwine and gradually coalesce into perceptible melodies. This musical development is analogous to the formation of compounds, amino acids, etc. Midway through The Creation the “spark of life" is introduced in an abrupt shift of musical activity which undergoes continuous development to the end of the movement. The animated second movement, Dance of Life, is a joyous celebration of life. Percussion distribution: Perc. 1: 2 suspended cymbals, 3 brake drums, 2 cowbells, temple blocks, tam-tam & sand blocks; Perc. 2: Orchestra bells, 5 roto toms & triangle; Perc.3: Flexitone, timpani (4), wind chimes, bongos & a thunder sheet (or a large tam-tam); Perc. 4: Xylophone, suspended cymbal, bass drum & chimes (tubular bells); Perc. 5: Marimba, 2 anvils metal pipes may be substituted), tambourine, finger cymbals & triangle; Perc. 6: Vibraphone, chimes (tubular bells) which are shared with player 4, snare drum, 2 suspended cymbals & tam-tam.The piano is treated as an integral part of the percussion battery. This engaging work is appropriate for a college-level percussion ensemble. Duende
Composer: Nogueroles, Eduardo
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Euphonium, Marimba
Genre: ContemporaryBass Clarinet or Euphonium and Marimba
From the composer:
Duende is a commission from Duo Antwerp, formed by Daniel Bellovi (Bass Clarinet) and Adilia Yip (Marimba), to promote the growth of bass clarinet as a solo instrument, and include Spanish music in the repertoire of this wonderful instrument.
It has been performed in its concerts by the Duo Antwerp in various countries. The version for euphonium and marimba was premiered at the AETYB Festival Madrid 2019- Super Regional ITEA by the Moreau VanTuinen Duo.
After an initial introduction in the form of lament, Duende develops between the first theme marked by the rhythmic ostinato of the marimba (register to low E) and the second theme in the form of buleria in which the two instruments alternate the melodic role. Interspersed between the two themes appear the demanding and suggestive cadences for the bass clarinet or the euphonium and the marimba.
The marked Spanish character of the piece, a good dose of virtuosity in the solo cadenzas, and catchy melodies to the rhythm of buleria, make Duende an irresistible score for a recital of bass clarinet or euphonium with marimba, for the performers and for the public.

Praxis
Composer: Deddos, Fernando
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Euphonium, Percussion
Genre: Contemporarywith:
Mallet Percussion – Marimba/Vibraphone
Percussion A – Suspended Cymbal; Timpani (2 piece); Tam-Tam; Wood-Wood
Percussion B – 3 Tom-Toms; Low-Drum; Triangle; Gran Cassa; Wood Blocks
Percussion C – Low Tom; Gran Cassa; Snare Drum (Medium-High); Wood-Wood
PRAXIS is about existence in everyday life, its routine and the applying of experience.
The piece is divided in 3 parts, just like a day. A reflexive and constructive Recitativo awakes the spirited and intentioned organization of a sunrise. In the Allegretto Circular, the continuous movement of the rhythm and the texture between the mallet percussion and the euphonium comes in an effort to represent the development and flowing of an individual’s day. The subsequent Presto Agitato dialogues about the posterior reflection of a night, it may be a Beethovian revolution, a meditative conclusion, or a bohemian reflection. The work is mainly influenced by Brazilian folksongs from the coast of the Parana State in Brazil and the alternative element can be found in the “wood-shoes” sound, which is characteristic of that region’s traditional music.

Concerto
Composer: Nogueroles, Eduardo
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Drum Set, Percussion, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThe Concerto for Tuba and Percussion (4 parts) is a work designed for solo tuba and percussion quartet. It consists of three intertwined movements: Allegro, Lento and March.
In this concerto the tuba is featured as a virtuosic instrument, surrounded by the rich sounds of percussion instruments in different shapes and timbres.
The instrumentation, centred in the drums, gives the piece a mystical atmosphere where the rhythm dominates the other musical factors. At times the vibraphone is used to support the harmony of the piece.
In principle, the piece is designed to be performed by four percussionists: the first plays timpani and temple blocks, the second plays four tom-toms or drums of different sizes, the third plays a group of drums with skin heads (four different tuned bongos and three congas) and vibraphone, and the fourth plays the drum set. These guidelines, in terms of percussion instruments, need not be used strictly, but can be varied depending on the availability of instruments or sound sensitivity of each performer.

Suite
Composer: Gates, Crawford
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Percussion, Piano, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryCrawford Gates on his Suite for Tuba (with celesta, harp, piano, and percussion accompaniment): “The subtitles of the six movements (Intrada, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte, Gigue) are derived from dance forms of several centuries back, but the harmonic content bows to some mid-twentieth century stylistic features. One unique combination among several is found in the third movement, the Courante. Here the tuba and xylophone play an unusual duet. But there are other strange combinations to capture the listener’s imagination. [Gates] hopes that the very unlikely pairing of instruments of this work proves to be entertaining to the listener.” Learn MoreFrom $44.95

Syrinx
Composer: Debussy, Claude Arranger: Brinkman, Justin
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Tuba
Genre: ContemporarySyrinx (1913), written for solo flute by French composer Claude Debussy, was originally planned to be used as incidental music to an uncompleted play entitled Psyche. This transcription is a setting of the famous piece for solo tuba. Much detail has been taken to ensure that the expression markings help the performer convey the mythical legend of the Greek God Pan and the nymph Syrinx, for which this piece is titled for. Being familar with the legend associated with this piece will greatly aid the performer in “painting” a believable portrait for listeners of Pan and Syrinx. The trills that occur in this arrangement can be omitted; however they do add a nice, coloring effect. Learn MoreFrom $14.95
