The first movement shows the rage capable with a brass instrument, then is immediately contrasted by the calm, lyrical nature of the second movement. The third movement shows the jovial nature of the tuba with its bouncing lines and lilting melodies. with Piano; Doubles was composed in 2018 and is intended to be performable on either Contra-bass or Bass tuba. The piece contrasts a slightly sad, sweet melody in the 3/4 sections with the jovial, bouncing lines of the 3/8 sections. The piano part in Doubles is also extremely important and frequently engages in a call and response with the melody in the tuba. Unaccompanied; Euphonium Groove was composed in 2018 and premiered by Thomas Jansen, a University of Central Arkansas graduate student, in 2021. Euphonium Groove plays with the rhythmic variation that can occur in a measure with eight eighth notes to create a fun, bouncing groove. The piece is designed to allow the soloist to use a mixture of rhythmic accents, range, and silence to create an accessible, lively, and fun performance.
