Polarities
Composer: Self, Jim
Instrumentation: Brass Choir Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryFor many years Jim Self has coached chamber music at The USC Thornton School of Music. He wrote Polarities in 2005 for his student quintets: The Self-Taught Brass and The Z Sharps. It was premiered by them at USC on April 17, 2005. It is a four-minute, one-movement, fanfare-like piece for Two Antiphonal Brass Quintets–al la Gabrielli. The sections are titled A la Fanfare, A la Scherzo and A la Waltz. Emphasizing the antiphonal effect is important to the overall sound with a lot of trading of passages between the instruments of each side. Each of the ten instruments has solo passages and rhythmic intricacies abound. The final half of the piece is a gradual build-up in intensity to the end. A Demo recording of Polarities was made by the Pacific Symphony Brass and is available in digital format.

Shipped - Stonehenge
Composer: Gates, Crawford
Instrumentation: Brass Choir Instruments: French Horn, Percussion, Timpani, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThis composition grew out of a musical concert in Chicago sometime in 1981. The concert was an outgrowth of public opinion about the superiority of various ensembles in three of the top five US Symphony Orchestras of that period. The Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy had the reputation of having the most luxurious string section of any orchestra in the world. Ormandy was a superior violinist himself, and worked his strings into providing a similar luxurious string sound of which he himself was master. It was agreed that the Boston Symphony had the top woodwind choir, and the Chicago Symphony the best brass choir.
An outgrowth of these widely held opinions occurred in Chicago in 1981 when the Chicago Symphony Brass section announced a performance in Symphony Hall. The event attracted a sell out crowd and standing room overflow. Public interest was keen and intense. The detail of the concert included brass solos, duets and trios of a wide variety and concluded with a large brass choir work by a local composer, which had been commissioned to premiere in this concert.
The musical evening was marvelous, a brilliant triumph for superlative brass players of world-class quality. Afterwards the players remained on the stage and were beset by hundreds of congratulating fans. The principal horn, Dale Clevenger, was a friend of mine who was present at the International Horn Conference in 1974, when Barry Tuckwell of the London Symphony premiered my Sonata for Horn and Piano. I congratulated Dale on the brass wonders that we had all just witnessed, and commented that the final brass work was somewhat disappointing. Dale said that he and the other players felt the same. At that point, Dale said “Why don’t you write a work for the Chicago Brass for our next offering?” How could I not be complimented by such an invitation? I immediately started to write “Stonehenge,” having just visited Stonehenge in Britain a month or two earlier. But the Chicago Brass did not have a follow up to their first presentation, so there was no opportunity for my new work to be performed by them.
Later there was a premiere in Madison, Wisconsin, by three professional brass quintets who were together hosted by the School of Music of the University of Wisconsin. They were joined by four superb percussionists from the Madison Symphony. “Stonehenge” received a wonderful ovation from an enthusiastic full house audience, and that led to wide use in the Midwest by other brass groups, including a professional brass choir in Minnesota, which recorded the work superbly, and two different tours of the work by a brass choir from the Indiana University School of Music.
The wonderful response to this work’s recording and its many performances have been a delight to the composer.

Flying Circus
Composer: Self, Jim
Instrumentation: Brass Choir Instruments: Bass Trombone, French Horn, Percussion, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary4 Trumpets, 4 Horns, 3 Trombones, Bass Trombone, 2 Tubas and 3 Percussion
From the composer:
Flying Circus was commissioned by the Pacific Brass Ensemble and was premiered in January 2002. It is a three movement work (fast-slow-fast).
Movement 1, Barnstorming, like its title, is energetic and extroverted. A fanfare intro is followed by soli statements in each of the brass families.
Movement 2, Castles in the Sky, is a slow ballad with many contrapuntal solo lines leading into a 12/8 waltz. The middle section features a tuba quartet. This movement was completed shortly after September 11, 2001 and is dedicated to the memory of the victims and heroes of that day.
The finale, Wing Ding, is a fast, odd-meter romp that features jazz solos for trombone and trumpet. The title, Flying Circus, comes from my other passion–flying.

Jason and the Golden Fleece
Composer: Raum, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Brass Choir Instruments: French Horn, Percussion, Timpani, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary4 Trumpets, 2 Horns, 4 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani and Percussion; 4 movements. The first movement, Jason and the Argonauts, represents the crew of heroes on the "Argo," the ship built to carry them in their quest for the Golden Fleece.
The Symplegades, or clashing islands, impeded the entrance to the Euxine Sea. These small rocky islands floated on the surface of the water, and in their tossings and heavings occasionally came together to crush anything caught between them. Jason, on the advice of Phineus, let a dove fly through the islands first, and when they clashed, just missing her, Jason passed safely through on the rebound.
Medea was the beautiful and seductive daughter of the Colchian king who owned the powerful sorceress and gives Jason a charm to help him complete the tasks her father demanded that Jason do to win the Fleece. One of those tasks, Sowing the Dragon's Teeth, required that Jason yoke two fire-breathing bulls to a plow and sow the teeth of the dragon which Cadmus had slain and from which would grow a crop of armed men. When this belligerent army rose from the ground, Jason, using the charm Medea had given him, caused such confusion in the ranks of his assailants that they turned on each other until there were none left.
The final movement, The Golden Fleece, comes as a tribute to the success of the group of heroes in their long and difficult quest.
