Concerto for Euphonium
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
In four movements and subtitled "Creative States", this concerto will allow the audience's imagination run wild as the performer paints the picture:
I. Wonder
II. Emptiness
III. Emptiness
IV. Joy
This piece was commissioned by:
Amy Schumaker Bliss
Lauren Veronie Curran
Jonathan Helmick
Jamie Lipton
Gail Robertson
Travis Scott
Evagene Wellman
I tend to think that the subtitle and movement titles of this piece should be fairly self explanatory. However, after thinking about it a bit I realized that perhaps there is room for at least a little elaboration. This piece is about states that I (and you?) can put myself in when I have little or no inspiration for a piece. In that sense, it was a bit of a joke on myself as I was writing this concerto. I have always claimed that there is plenty of human and personal subject matter about which to write, so this is about what one can do when not feeling particularly inspired.
Three of the movements are states of childlike awareness - Wonder, Playfulness and Joy. The second movement is more of a meditative state, Emptiness, and is musically reflective of the piano "Gymnopedies" of Erik Satie. To me, it is a zen like emptying of oneself, creating a mental and emotional vacuum into which inspiration can enter. What is not mentioned here is that deadlines can also be a powerful impetus towards creativity for composers and other artists. Deadlines are the most terrifying, but often the most effective.

noc·turne (näktərn)
noun
1.1. – MUSIC - a short composition of a romantic or dreamy character suggestive of night, typically for piano.
2.2. – ART - a picture of a night scene.
In this case, I am not trying to replicate a dreamy piano piece but rather a piece of Art depicting a more contemporary night scene. I am seeing myself sitting on a front porch, balcony or back deck in the evening. All is calm as one struggles to get past the stresses of the day and relax into the growing night. Depending on one's whereabouts there is a rush of sound, a scurry and a scuttling. This could be animals in a rural setting or mischievous children, even thieves in the city. One then either watches a "woman of the night" walk down the street or imagines an amorous encounter with one's own partner. Perhaps both. The scurrying happens again and one settles back into a state of observance and even reverie. Throughout one can find occasional depictions of heartbeats, reminding us of how grateful we are to experience this night.

For the Children
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This story was written for my friend Hiroaki Shiomi about his love for his children.
Here is the story:
It is getting close to bedtime. We see the children. They are so sweet and beautiful. The mother takes charge and starts to make sure that they do everything they need to do before bed. They pick up their toys, wash their hands and faces, brush their teeth, start to read a story etc., etc., and everything is very calm. They are even getting more tired and sleepy. Then Daddy comes in and he wants to play! He picks them up and plays with them, making them laugh and laugh. The children and Daddy run around together, laughing, playing and being silly. Before long the children become so tired that they cannot play anymore. Daddy and Mommy put them to bed together and they fall asleep while their parents watch. Together they are perfect parents and love their children in every way.

How Beautiful
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
How Beautiful was written at the request of Matt and Kristy Brown in memory of their son, Eli Reuben Brown, with us briefly on May 19, 2008. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings of peace; who publishes good tidings of good, and who declares salvation; who says to Zion, Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7)
It was privilege for me to write this piece for the Browns, who shared with me some of their most intimate thoughts and feelings in the process. They have been the embodiment of Faith, Hope and Love and are a living example that “the greatest of these” is always Love.

"This piece is written in such a way that any or all of the movements could be juxtaposed beside or between each other, before or after. Hence the movement titles ' ....vs'

A Caged Bird
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bass Trombone, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This piece was not written specifically in response to either the poem by Maya Angelou or that by Paul Dunbar that both refer to “the caged bird”. However, there is no doubt that both poems have inspired my own further exploration and now musical extrapolation on the subject of being “caged” and of still “singing” in spite of this. With all due respect and admiration for Ms. Angelou and Mr. Dunbar, I have attempted here in my own concept of “cagedness” to include, beyond racial references, also those issues that include gender, sexuality, economic status, medical/physical problems and any number of other situations that create restrictive and even imprisoning boundaries from which we and all others struggle to break free and find fully human, creative and even spiritual expression within ourselves. Even within the many bonds and restrictive boundaries that we often find ourselves, it still seems to be a fundamental part of our Nature as both human and Spiritual beings that we cannot help but “sing” in both joy and praise both from ourselves and to our own Creator despite the sometimes, even apparently insurmountable obstacles we encounter. For me, this piece is not so much an exploration as to “why the caged bird sings” as it is simply a commenting, even with some measure of wonderment, on its remarkable inevitability.

Ripples
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Percussion, Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryTrumpet Duet with 8 Trumpets, Claves and Egg ShakerIt was my honor and my pleasure to write this piece in dedication to Vincent Di Martino (and his son Gabriel) upon Vince's 50th year in higher education. The image I had for this piece was of someone casting stones into a pool and the ripples going out, one by one, from each stone - in that sense as each of many ideas from teacher to son, to students, to the students of students, to colleagues in the US and eventually worldwide.
The piece also reflects Mr. Di Martino's legendary versatility by changing styles mid-way while still using the same thematic motive. There is even an opportunity for improvisation towards the end. May the ripples continue on and on for many years and many generations.
