Tempus Fugit (“time flies”) is a brief piece for solo tuba that unfolds in a clear ternary form. The principal figure of the opening section is a rhythmic motive; this is later blended with suggestions of a more melodic nature. The middle section provides a contrast by introducing longer note values in a consistently lower tessitura, before the return of the opening material. Tempus Fugit was written for tubist Jeffrey Funderburk and premiered by him at the University of Northern Iowa, 6 October 1988. Dr. Funderburk has recorded Tempus Fugit on his second solo CD, Journeys (Mark Records #3176).

Will There Be a Time is a work for solo tuba that makes a statement against war. In the opening section, March and Battle, the tuba simulates the low rumble of the approaching tanks and gunshots of the fighting. The frantic cries of those trying to escape are mixed with the sounds of the battle in Fleeing Refugees while the hopelessness of the Aftermath asks the question, Will There Be a Time?

This work was inspired by a news report I heard when a woman, driven from her home by war, was briefly interviewed. She and her neighbour had been friends, having coffee together while they talked about their children, and now, she and her neighbour were forced to be enemies against their will by the warring factions and she couldn't understand why this had to be.

In 2018, Spanish bass and contrabass trombonist Javier Colomer will record a new album that includes works for trombone and organ as well as for unaccompanied bass and contrabass trombones. The music on this disc spans four centuries, from Palestrina and Gabrielli through Handel, Schubert, and Faure, among others. The newest piece on the album – a work for unaccompanied contrabass trombone by American composer Frank Gulino – had not been completed at the time

Javier Colomer is an internationally renowned bass and contrabass trombone soloist and teacher who has given recitals and master classes across the globe for more than 25 years. During that time, Javier has performed with orchestras and wind bands both as an ensemble musician and concerto soloist, and presented masterclasses to over a thousand students from some of the world's leading conservatories and universities. He is a past member of the ITA Board of Advisors and also authored “The World of The Contrabass Trombone,” the first comprehensive method book for that instrument. Javier's advocacy of the contrabass trombone as a solo instrument is a natural extension of his experience as a performer and pedagogue, and he continues to regularly commission and premiere new works for the bass and contrabass trombones. This piece won Honorable Mention for unaccompanied tuba at the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, 2020.

Whales sing but other than the clicks made by dolphins and other toothed whales, whale sounds remain mysterious.  It may be that whales use “echolocation” to identify potential prey and threats, or to find a mate.   Researchers believe that whale sounds can travel more than 10,000 miles in some levels of the ocean.

Although we don’t know exactly why or how they communicate,  imagining their lives and what they might say to each other is fascinating.

HoUsE miX was composed in September-October of 1995 at the request of tubist Jeffrey Funderburk. The recording of the electronics part provides the first three beats of measure one and then the tubist begins – in time – on the second eighth note of the fourth beat in measure one (marked * in the score).  As to the title, it was my intention in writing this piece to emphasize the electronic nature of the accompaniment rather than to try and disguise it.  In borrowing materials and gestures from the language of 1990s techno dance music, I also sought to borrow one of its structural conceits: the sharp juxtaposition of diverse materials (represented by the mash-up of upper- and lower-case letters in the title). Jeffrey Funderburk has recorded HoUsE miX on his second solo CD, Journeys (Mark Records #3176).
