Sonata No. 1
Composer: Bowen, York Arranger: DeBoer, Andrew
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Among York Bowen’s many works, there is a significant body of viola works. Many of these viola works were written for the English violist Lionel Tertis, whose mission was to promote viola through the commissioning of viola works from a variety of composers. Bowen composed this Sonata No. 1 in C Minor for viola and piano in 1905. The piece was first performed by Tertis on viola and Bowen on piano. While touring in Germany with Tertis, Bowen received glowing reviews of both his playing and his viola works. This sonata was presumably among these works.

The Slaughter of the Innocents
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Trombone
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano; Written for Austin Seybert
Holy Bible, New English Version: Matthew 2: 16-18
Herod Kills the Children
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.
17 a Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
18 b“A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they care no more.”
USA version
Then the President became furious and worried about the potential challenges to his power and authority. He separated all the immigrant children from their parents, put them in cages, suppressed their documentation and allowed them to become malnourished and ill without proper food and care. Some died, many became despondent and cried repeatedly for their mothers. All suffered and their parents did not know where or how they were.

Sonata for Bassoon and Piano
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bassoon, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This piece for bassoon and piano was written for my daughter, Megan Potter, for her Senior Recital in Bassoon in 2002. As I tend to write “concept” pieces, this Sonata was designed to be very personal and to revolve around my daughter and our immediate family.
The first movement depicts the “happy family” of her childhood, when we were all together. The second movement expresses some of the tender feelings she was then having for the young man whom she eventually married.
The third movement is one of my “Matthew” movements. I find that I often have my son in mind when I write some of my most cheerful and lively pieces and this one displays a certain jauntiness and irrepressible jocularity that Matthew always had as a young child.

Shipped - Concerto (War Games)
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Bass Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryCONCERTO
“War Games”
I. Toy Soldiers
II. Courtship
III. Marriage
IV. Capture the Flag
I commissioned this concerto in honor of Maestro Charles Schneider, the founding music director of Glimmerglass Opera and recently retired conductor of four symphony orchestras in upstate New York: Schenectady, Catskill (Oneonta), Utica, and Clinton. Maestro Schneider gave me my first job when I moved to the area. In addition to the symphonies and opera, I enjoyed playing under Chuck’s direction for a wide variety of one-nighters with famous musicians, Broadway shows at the Orpheus Theater, and with two ballet companies. His impact on the musical life of Central New York over the past five decades is incalculable. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his own opera, Skaters.
Barbara York likes to find inspiration for her compositions in the life of the person who places the commission, thus the subtitle War Games, taken from my avid interest in tabletop board games.
Toy Soldiers paints a vivid picture of plastic men come to life, patrolling the house after dark, then returning to their game box as the skies begin to brighten.
Courtship and Marriage speak to the sometimes not so subtle “battle of the sexes” we often experience in our relationships.
When I first heard the synthesized sound file for Courtship, I was delighted by its 19th-century parlor music flavor. Ms. York later explained that she wanted to capture the courtship scenes in my Civil War novel, The Unfinished Work. She succeeded beautifully! The movement opens with Jake’s heartfelt emotions as he awaits the arrival of his beloved. When she arrives, a minor dispute breaks out: “I thought you said….” Jake splutters his defense but is cut off with her, “Did too!” Emotion released, his beloved turns to gentle flirtations; but after a brief interlude, her temper briefly flares once again. Jake calms her by pouring out his heart in music.
The mixed meters and minor key in Marriage keep the listener off balance and create a wonderful sense of intrigue: standard strategies from The Wife’s Game Plan?
Capture the Flag percolates with the energy and adrenaline rush of seeking to capture before being captured.
The piano edition was premiered by Frank Meredith and Charles Powers on May 31, 2019 at Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, NY.
The band edition was premiered by Frank Meredith and the Catskill Valley Wind Ensemble; Andrew Pease, conductor; November 17, 2019 in Oneonta, NY.

Moral Dilemmas
Composer: York, Barbara

Genre: ContemporaryTuba and Percussion
"This piece is written in such a way that any or all of the movements could be juxtaposed beside or between each other, before or after. Hence the movement titles ' ....vs'
In this respect, I am suggesting that moral dilemmas come in many forms and to many different people. Enjoy and experiment." Barbara York

River of Stars
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Wind Band
Genre: ContemporaryWritten in 2019 for the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point bands, Michael S. Butler, director. Dedicated to Donald E. Greene and in celebration of the 125th anniversary of UWSP.This piece is not "sweet and twinkly" as one might expect from a piece about "stars". It is about vastness, movement through space, rotation, awe and even at times the calm in the middle of the storm. I used photos of the Milky Way and even Van Gogh's "Starry Night" as my inspiration for this piece. We are past thinking that space and the stars are sweet, twinkly, calm and always beneficent. This is a more contemporary view of our understanding of what we see when we look up at night. Barbara York

noc·turne (näktərn)
noun
1.1. – MUSIC - a short composition of a romantic or dreamy character suggestive of night, typically for piano.
2.2. – ART - a picture of a night scene.
In this case, I am not trying to replicate a dreamy piano piece but rather a piece of Art depicting a more contemporary night scene. I am seeing myself sitting on a front porch, balcony or back deck in the evening. All is calm as one struggles to get past the stresses of the day and relax into the growing night. Depending on one's whereabouts there is a rush of sound, a scurry and a scuttling. This could be animals in a rural setting or mischievous children, even thieves in the city. One then either watches a "woman of the night" walk down the street or imagines an amorous encounter with one's own partner. Perhaps both. The scurrying happens again and one settles back into a state of observance and even reverie. Throughout one can find occasional depictions of heartbeats, reminding us of how grateful we are to experience this night.

Madison Avenue
Composer: DiBerardino, Nick
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Clarinet, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Nick DiBerardino says, “Madison Avenue is a work full of whimsy, bustle and effervescent energy. Composed with New York City’s famous Madison Avenue in mind, this piece attempts to capture the action of New York’s busy streets, the mass of its towering buildings and the thrill – and occasional anxiety – of participating in its frenetic rituals. Madison Avenue’s celebrated advertising history plays a role here, as well; I like to think you can hear somewhere in the work the furious typing of secretaries or the insistence of a hard sell. Above all, this is a playful piece, a romp and a gallop, a miniature rhapsody infused with the spirit and drive of the city. In it, I hope you hear an unbridled enthusiasm and an unyielding optimism, both marked on the music by the persistent energy of the human spirit.”
